A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week PROGRAMS – BIBLE STUDIES

Lectio: Salvation with Dr. Michael Barber In the Book of Isaiah, a prophesy is given to the Israel-ites who are in exile in Babylonia. They were taken there by the Babylonians in the Babylonian conquest of the Kingdom of Judah. This prophesy in Chapter 40 is given as a message of comfort that God had not abandoned the people, but that His people were not put out of His heart. His glory would be revealed and the people of Judah would be restored. Verse three prophesies: “A voice proclaims: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!” We find out in the beginning of Mark’s Gospel that John the Baptist takes on this role preparing the people and the world for the coming of the Messiah. John the Baptist’s message is also a message of comfort for God’s people that God is with them, and will soon deliver them from the exile that sin brought onto humanity. John the Baptist went before the Lord to prepare the people’s hearts to receive him when he came. Palm Sunday is last hurrah of preparation for the cele-bration of the passion, death, and resurrection of the Sav-ior. We must finalize the preparation of our hearts to re-ceive the grace of the Spirit to enter into the Paschal event of the resurrection that we too, one day in Christ, will be resurrected. Let Sunday’s celebration prepare your heart for the outpouring of God’s grace in this time of upheaval of our lives. May it strengthen you to live more fully your faith in God. If the prophets along with John the Baptist teach us nothing else, let them instill in our hearts and minds the truth that God is with us. We are never far from His mind and heart.

A Prayer to Combat the Coronavirus Pandemic… Most Merciful and Triune God, We come to you in our weakness. We come to you in our fear. We come to you with trust. For you alone are our hope. We place before you the disease present in our world. We turn to you in our time of need. Bring wisdom to doctors, Giving understanding to scien-tists. Endow caregivers with compassion and generosity. Bring healing to those who are ill. Protect those who are most at risk. Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one. Wel-come those who have died into your eternal home. Stabilize our communities. Unite us in our compassion. Remove all fear from our hearts. Fill us with confidence in your care. Jesus, I trust in you. Jesus, I trust in you. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen. St. Roch and St. Sebastian, pray for us!

How To Celebrate Holy Week… During the weeks of Lent, we have prepared for this final week by fasting, pray-ing, and almsgiving, all with the purpose of opening our-selves more fully to God’s presence in our lives. During Ho-ly Week, we walk with Jesus, we suffer with him, we die with him, and finally, we rise again: new creatures, brought deeply into the joy of redemption and new life now, and we pray, forever. On these days, we are offered a gift: Biblical symbols and liturgical gestures that help us to enter into the salvific events of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We don’t just watch, but we participate in each of them as strive to follow Christ more closely.

Please Note: Palms will not be distributed until we gather as a congregation at Mass.

Key Scriptural Passage: Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-even death on a cross. (Phil 2:7-8)

Questions for Discussion: Adult: How will you try to imitate the obedience and humili-ty of Christ during this Holy Week? Child: What could you do to show respect for Jesus this week as the church remembers his death and resurrection?

FIRST READING - Acts 10:34,37-43 Peter proceeded to speak and said: "You know what has hap-pened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name."

SECOND READING - Colossians 3:1-4

Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

GOSPEL - John 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Prayer for Holy Week...Father , we now enter into the mystery of your Son’s passion, death and resurrec-tion. Jesus suffered for our sins. Let me join the suf-ferings of my life to the passion of your Son. Wash me clean of sin and prepare me to celebrate with joy,

your Son’s resurrection. He is the promise of life eternal. His holy cross has redeemed the world. Your Son, Jesus Christ, suffered and died for us. In his name, have mercy.
