Liturgy Updates

~ Lent, a Season of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving ~ A time of spiritual renewal and to carefully examine one’s relationship with God and others. It is also a time in which catechumens prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Here are some ways you can participate with your Parish Family • Attend daily Mass (St. Rose of Lima Par ish offers 6:30

AM & 8:00 AM, weekday Masses ) Catholics are encouraged to receive Communion as often as possible.

• Read and pray Sacred Scripture (St. Rose of Lima offers Bible Study classes and Prayer Workshops sessions) Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to strengthen knowledge of the faith.

• Participate in special devotions offered at St. Rose of Lima Parish: Praying the Rosary, (prayed daily after daily Mass) the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. (Can you take the Vocation Cross home for a week?)

• Devote time for Eucharistic Adoration, offered each Friday evening though Saturday morning during Lent following Stations of the Cross. A signup board is located in the vestibule of the church. Please let us know if you can attend.

• Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are obliged to confess our sins at least once a year (CIC 989). St. Rose is hosting “14 Hours for the Lord” the weekend of March 9th and 10th. On Friday, March 9th from 4 pm – 12 midnight and Saturday, March 10 from 6 AM – 12 noon.

• Attend the Stations of the Cross celebrated bilingually every Friday evening during Lent, (except 3/16) beginning at 6:30 PM at St. Rose of Lima Parish.

• Attend the St Rose Lenten Mission “Find your Greatness” on Friday, March 16 here at St. Rose—doors open at 5:30PM

• Consider giving during this Lenten Season to Rice Bowl, Sacramento Life Center Baby Bottles, St. Vincent de Paul, WWJD, or the Lazarus Project are some other charities. We, the faithful are also encouraged to visit the sick, the homebound, the aged, and those in prison, remembering the words of our Lord Jesus Christ who said, “As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40).

Fasting and abstinence together with almsgiving and charitable works unite us to the crucified Christ reflected in the image of our brothers and sisters who suffer.

A copy of the complete letter of 2018 Lenten Regulations from the Diocese of Sacramento Office of Worship is available near the front doors. Please feel free to take one home.

COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God's laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Year B of the Lectionary has the Letter to the Ephesians today. Ephesus, today in Turkey, was in the first century a great Greek city, the center for the worship of Diana, the goddess of the hunt. It was a vast city even by modern standards, having nearly half a million people in the time of Paul. Yet that was a time of economic recession and moral decay. No wonder Saint Paul stayed here the longest. It gave him an enormous and religiously curious audience. His preaching stirred up the artisans who depended on the pilgrims who came to honor (and buy mementos of) seventeen gods and goddesses enshrined in the city's temples. You can still see the open-air theater where Paul's homily triggered a riot. Paul did have success here, and many conversions among Jews and Gentiles. They seem to have struggled with hope, perhaps because of their suffering from economic woes and isolation. Some old traditions say that the Apostle John lived out his days here, and that the Blessed Mother was cared for by him. There's no biblical basis for this, but it is certain that a small house just outside the city has been treasured by Christians and Muslims for centuries as the last dwelling of Mary. Long ago, the harbor silted up and the city was nearly abandoned, becoming a small village. As is so often the case, that accident of history preserved the ancient city, so that archeologists have been very successful in revealing ancient Christian sites. One such site is the Church of Mary, probably the first church to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and the site of the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, a visit to Ephesus is one of the most rewarding journeys for any pilgrim. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J.
