WORD OF LIFE “When a patient says I don’t want to be a burden, it may really be a question, Am I a burden?...when a patient says I might as well be dead, he may really be saying No one cares about me. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

There have been many times in the Church where we latch onto trends and movements, attracted by a new concept or idea of how we should practice our faith.

I think back to the 1970s, where art and environment seemed to explode into so many different directions. We were trying out new liturgical music forms, new ways of setting the tone of a worship space, and new prayer experiences we often labeled as "para-liturgical." Even though some will look back with nostalgia or even fondness, a lot of it wasn't very good, for it distracted some from the source and summit of our faith: the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Mass. I mean, how many burlap and felt banners are too many? Some might say, "One!"

Regardless of how one might look back at those days, the reality is that most of it has passed away. It originated from humans and their experiences of the time. It was not some divine revelation of how things should be.

Skeptics will say talk of stewardship in the Church today is really just a trend and it will pass away. In fact, I have been at conferences where presenters have suggested that it is time to leave the term stewardship behind. They think this spirituality has a human origin.

But stewardship is a spirituality that comes out of the parables and the good news of Jesus Christ. It is about more than the simple slogans we have used: The 3 Ts, an Attitude of Gratitude, and Sharing Is Caring. It is about seeing all things as gifts from God, and the use of those gifts for his glory. It is about total surrender to God. It is about a complete lack of attachment to things of this world and the giving of it all for eternal life in the next. It is about being a mature disciple. And you can put THAT on a banner! -LPI publications

10TH SUNDAY IN

ORDINARY TIME

In the very difficult economic times of the last few years, many families found themselves relying on resources that they

had never had to utilize in the past. Some households used their retirement savings or tried to sell their homes after a job loss. Others found themselves grateful for unemployment compensation even if it didn't pay all their bills. Some adult children found it necessary to move back in with their parents, while some families found help from a local food pantry or meal program-maybe one to which in better times they actually made donations.

In Sunday's Gospel, the widow from Nain has lost her only son. In the time of Jesus, this was not only a personal loss filled with grief, but also a devastating economic event. There was no one on whom she could rely for support. With her husband gone and now her only son dead, the woman had nothing. She was in the very worst of straits. That is, until Jesus came along. Suddenly, the widow had renewed hope, as her son was raised up and restored to her. Her life could go on.

The plight of our neighbors in need today is not so different from that of the widow of Nain. While we might want to have Jesus walk into town and give them their house or their job back, we know that isn't going to happen. But that doesn't mean that something can't happen. Indeed, something should! As the followers of Christ today, we are his presence in this world. When there are people suffering, we are the ones called upon to reach out and help. There might be one or the other among us who actually can offer someone a job, but most of us will help in other ways. It can be as simple as buying one extra item every time we go grocery shopping to donate to the local food pantry. We can all help!

FOR OUR CHILDREN Sharing the Gospel Imagine you fell from the jungle gym at the school playground. You would not even need to ask for help. If you were so hurt that you could barely walk or breathe, your teacher would see you and come running. The widow in today's Gospel story did not need to ask Jesus for help. Jesus saw her pain and came running to help her. Jesus sees when you are in pain, too, and he always comes to help you, too. Prayer Jesus, I thank you for raising the widow's son to life. I know that you are with me, too, when I am sad or hurt. Something to Draw Draw a picture of Jesus hugging you when you are sad. Mission for the Week Read Luke 7:11-17 with your family. Think of ways Jesus has helped you through sad times, even if you didn't ask for help.

AN HOUR OF PRAYER FOR HOPE & HEALING Please join us for one hour of intercessory prayer on behalf of those impacted by abortion. Prayer resources will be provided. When: Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 6-7 pm Where: St. Patrick Downtown Church, St. Charles-400 Cedar Street Contact: Kathy Berkes/Life & Family Evangelization Office-815-399-4300 x 435

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us join together in praying for all those affected by abortion, so that they may find hope and healing in the merciful Love of God.

“Today too, amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others. To protect creation, to protect every man and every woman, to look upon them with tenderness and love, is to open up a horizon of hope; it is to let a shaft of light break through the heavy clouds; it is to bring the warmth of hope!” ~ Pope Francis

When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep." He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!" The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Je-sus gave him to his mother. - Lk 7:13-15
