The Beverly High baseball team set a school record with 19 wins a season ago.

The scariest part for the rest of the Northeastern Conference is that the Panthers could be even better this spring.

Despite graduating NEC Large MVP Peter Kallas, vet-eran head coach Dave Wilbur returns the bulk of a lineup that will be the certified murderer’s row of the North Shore.

“Last year doesn’t guaran-tee us any wins this year, but it should give us more confi-dence,” said Wilbur. “We’ve played some really good

competition and know what it takes to be successful.

“We have a great group of kids who like baseball and are ready to play. Our key players are experienced players, and we have some guys who have been waiting for their turn.”

Junior catcher Joe Wioncek is the centerpeice of the area’s most prolific offensive club. The backstop can spray the ball all over the field and hit .461 last year with an absurd on-base percentage of .621.

Fellow junior Andy Brown is a three-year starter back at short-stop after hitting .405 last spring while scoring a team-best 32 runs.

Meanwhile, third baseman Austin Butler, who batted .417

in his first season as a Panther after transferring from St. John’s Prep, is the team’s top returning long ball threat with five homers as a junior.

The Panthers return a host of other .300-plus hitters, including NEC all-star Felix Zamot (.389) at first as well as Mark Han-nable and Mark Theriault (.351 average, .527 on-base pct.) in the outfield. Ethan Trowt (.371 aver-age last year) and Steve DuBois (.319) should also contribute. Dan Cook, Chris Mitchell and Steve Wilbur will battle for time at second.

After scoring 212 runs — an average of 9.6 per game — and hitting .365 as a team a year ago, the prevailing notion is that Beverly can score runs.

Defending the NEC Large title, however, will come down to pre-venting them.

“The chore of the preseason is to replace 16 of our 19 wins,” said Wilbur, who graduated 16 pitching wins in Kallas, Frankie Messina and Matt Lanza. “That starts with Kyle (Johnson) and Ethan (Trowt). We have some quality young arms and are looking for those two to be solid at the top.”

Trowt was reliable last year, with an earned run average of 3.47 and a opponent’s bat-ting average of .196 against in 28 innings of work. Johnson, a junior, provided some strong

innings a year ago and will be counted on in a bigger role this spring. Cook and Theriault also have the ability to step in on the hill as needed.

Defending the NEC Large title will be tough with Lynn English and Peabody always in the mix. Salem and Lynn Classical look improved and crossover games against Marblehead, Danvers and Gloucester are never cupcakes.

The Panthers have a new wrinkle as they look to qualify for the postseason for the sev-enth straight season — they’ll be in the Division 2 North tour-nament, rather than Div. 1.

There is a sense of achieve-ment with the Salem High soft-ball team this season.

The Witches had a break-through last spring, qualifying for the state tourney for the first time since 2000. The current seniors have seen the team’s win total spike every year, from seven in their freshman year to nine as sophomores and to 13 last season.

But even though coach Dan Bertone’s team has earned more respect, it is far from con-tent. A postseason loss to tradi-tional power Acton-Boxboro and a desire to be a bigger player in Eastern Mass. softball will fuel the Witches this season.

“We thought we might have enough wins last year to get a home game in the state tourna-ment, but it didn’t happen,” said

Bertone, who in his sixth season as the head coach. “We would love to have a home game this year, so it might take 15 wins or whatever. These kids want to take another step.”

The Witches appear to have the talent to do it — provided the attitude and focus are there, too.

Salem should have one of the top pitchers around in junior Sarah Chasse, a returning Northeastern Conference all-star who posted a 1.94 ERA last season. Chasse’s effectiveness is enhanced by the ability to field her position, which dis-courages the opposition from

playing small ball against the Witches.

“With Sarah on the mound and Julia Jennings (a two-time NEC all-star) at third base, we see fewer bunts,” said Bertone. “It kind of takes that aspect of the game out of people’s minds.

“I don’t need Sarah to be totally overpowering,” added the coach. “She’ll keep us in every game with her control. If she can get 7-8 strikeouts a game, I think we have a defense that can make enough plays to get the rest of the outs.”

Jennings gives the Witches stability and skill at third base

and she’s coming off a season in which she hit .350. “She’s just a complete player,” said Bertone.

Senior Rachel Channen enters her second season as Chasse’s catcher and Salem has an adept centerfielder in senior Michelle Stanley, who gets a good jump on the ball and covers a lot of territory.

Darcy Therriault, affection-ately called the “dirt dog” by her coach because of her scrappy style, is back at second base and is the team’s best baserunner. “She’ll hit in the No. 9 spot, but it’s like having a second leadoff hitter,” said

Bertone.Shortstop appeared to be a

huge question mark for the Witches with the graduation of four-year starter Ashley White, but senior Stephanie Garcia, who missed the last two seasons with ACL injuries, has taken control of the position. “She’s ready to go, and I think she’ll be a very big bat for us,” Bertone said of Garcia.

Lindsey Trammel, the desig-nated player last season, will be the leadoff hitter for the second straight year. Juniors Sarah Malarkey (infield or outfield) and Allie LaMonica (first base) will also be counted on.

For good teams, disappoint-ment can often lead to success down the road.

So after a disappointing first round exit in the Division 1 North state tournament to Central Catholic of Lawrence last spring, the Peabody High girls tennis team is back for this season ready to wipe the slate clean and make some noise in the postseason.

“We have a lot of experience now,” said Peabody High head coach Lorraine Benoit, whose club is anchored by senior captains Emily Athas, Samantha Syska and Kerrianne O’Brien.

“The girls have

certainly done their home-work and worked really hard in the offseason to improve. That’s really what you have to do at this level if you want to compete.”

Emily Athas, a two-time Salem News girls tennis all-star, and sophomore Alaina Warren (also a Salem News all-star) each saw time at first singles last season. They helped guide the Tanners to a 13-5 regular season mark and a No. 11 seed in the Division 1 North playoffs.

Back in the same two spots this time around — either Athas and Warren can play first or second singles as needed — Peabody figures to be strong at the top of its lineup.

“Alaina has been coming to the net a lot more,” noted Benoit. “She did a lot of fine-

tuning of her game in the offseason and I think its going to show more variety in her stroke.

“Emily is steady, very steady. The two will be battling (for the right to play first singles) all season.”

O’Brien and Syska are a

strong pair in first doubles for Peabody. Meanwhile, junior Erica Reeves and sophomores Sarah Athas and Kayli Lohman will also look to give the Blue and White big contributions in second doubles and third singles, respectively.

Peabody, which began its

season last Friday against former Greater Boston League rival Cambridge Rindge & Latin, set itself up nicely for the regular season with scrim-mages, including one against always-powerful Manchester Essex.

“(Scrimmages) are about

practice and getting comfort-able with your shot,” explained Benoit. “I want the girls to be comfortable, whether they are trying to sneak a shot down the line or across the court, and not get beaten by the line. It’s about getting the butter-flies out.”

The past two years have been very good for the Danvers High girls spring track team. They’re hoping to follow suit again this spring.

The Falcons went a perfect 7-0 in winning the Northeastern Conference South champion-ship in 2009 after having gone 6-1 the previous spring. This time around, they realize there will be a real challenge to their crown coming from a powerful Marblehead squad.

“Every year you win, the target on your back gets big-ger,” said Falcons head coach Sean Dunleavy, now in his 10th year at the helm. “We’ve got a lot of returning veterans and some new faces mixed in. We’re expecting another strong year.

“But when you look at what Marblehead is doing right now, it’s easy to say that will be a very big meet for us (this Thursday at home). Their girls are running super, and under Mike (Toomey, the Magicians’ new head coach) they’re a very dangerous team.”

The strongest area for the Fal-cons are the throwing events, and they are also solid in jumps.

Christina Kaczynski, Megan Taylor, Marlene Christenson, Maria Pantazelos and Taryn Pydynkowski are the team’s five senior captains. Kaczynski does sprints and middle dis-tance while Taylor hurdles, high jumps and runs middle distance events. Throws are where Chris-tenson excels, while Pantazelos will do jumps and sprints and Pydynkowski is a top performer in jumps.

“The ebb and flow of differ-ent events is very interesting,” said Dunleavy. “Before Chris-tenson arrived we were very

weak in throws, but now it’s our strength. We should pick up a lot of points in jumps with Pan-tazelos and Amanda Caldarone. Amanda really came on last year as a sophomore, and she’s a threat to break the school high hurdles record. He Dad (Geoff) set a number of hurdles records back in the early 1980s that are still standing.

“We should be fine in all the

other events because in every one, we have a quality person who can win. I think we can score multiple times in throws and jumps. We also have very good relay teams.”

Sophomore Haley Dyer heads up the Danvers distance team. She’s coming off strong cross country and indoor track sea-sons; Dunleavy is hoping she will build on them and continue

developing into one of the top milers and two-milers in the conference.

Dunleavy is also counting on junior Carson Garvin (throws), sophomore Rachel Kaczyn-ski (middle distance) and newcomer Xanthi Pantazelos (sprints).

“We have close to 60 girls out; that’s the biggest team I’ve ever had,” said Dunleavy. “Numbers

like that are good to have, and I have a lot of great assistant coaches helping out. Peter Bush (the Danvers boys’ head coach) and I work closely together. He’s a sprint guy and I’m dis-tance, so it’s a great collabora-tive effort.

“This group works hard and is well disciplined. Last year is last year, and this is a whole new season.”

There is also a cer-tain level of confidence after Danvers reached the Division 1 North final last year.

The St. John’s Prep lacrosse team made some pretty sweet memories last year, inlcud-ing a regular season victory over Duxbury that stopped the Green Dragons’ in-state win streak at 99 games and a nar-row defeat against the same squad in the Division 1 state championship.

Eagles coach John Roy would prefer his team to forget all about that stuff.

At least for now.Roy feels that if his squad

wants to continue reaching its goals, then the Eagles need to remain focused on what’s in front of them, not behind.

“An obstacle for a team that has met with some success is relying on past accomplish-ments to get you by,” Roy said. “We’re going to attempt not to do that this year. My job is to steer the ship, keep us grounded and keep them work-ing hard.

“There’s some luck involved. Just because we’ve been to Har-vard Stadium once (for the state championship game) doesn’t mean you (automatically) get to go back.”

The Eagles lost some key pieces from the team that took Duxbury (a 13-12 loss) to the wire in the state championship game, including Salem News Player of the Year John Jen-nings, but there’s also a strong group returning.

Senior captains Garrett Campbell, James Fahey, Jeff Dube and Nick Triano are a strong quartet who possess leadership and skill.

Campbell, a Harvard-bound attackman, is one of the top scor-ers in the state who is coming off an All-American season. Fahey and Dube, meanwhile, bring size, strength and athleticism to the defensive side of the field.

Then there’s Triano, a goalie-

in-waiting for years. Triano was the backup to Nick Valenti for two years, but Roy has handed over the keys to Triano for his senior season.

“I have to say we do have some good leadership,” Roy said of his captains. “They’re taking their roles seriously.”

There isn’t any signs of satis-faction with this team, either.

Juniors Matt Scalise (attack), Jimmy O’Connell (midfielder), Colin Blackwell (midfielder), John Farrow (midfielder) and

Chris Coady (defense) bring more experience back to the Eagles. Collectively, the group of returnees remains hungry.

“I think the way last year ended did leave a taste in their mouths that they weren’t really satisfied in a one-goal loss (in the state championship),” Roy said. “They’re motivated. The new guys and the young guys who were on the JV and fresh-man teams, for them to see the seniors this hyped up and moti-vated is really good.”
