I hope someone can help me with what some I'll post are. This is the quirkiest one I have, looks like a bird and maybe even is a salt. Linda Kelsey gave it to me a long time ago.

Also from England, I bought this "penny dip" used to serve a taste of ice cream when it was a luxury. Pretty color and finely cut glass.

I've seen a piece just like this except a little taller that was likely a little drinks glass. This could be the right shape for a salt. But is it? Silly looking stork.
41 On #39, I meant to write "This I know."

There is a long story about this ....Victorian egg cup tray, thingie.Loooong time ago, I got just the skeleton of this. Thinking smarty, that I am, I'd find the rest of the pieces. Ha, no way did that happen. So I saw this and had to get it, as it has alllllll the peices. It's not the prettiest but those Victorians had some real interesting pieces.

Denise, #36 has an unpolished pontil, no mark, and it's tiny, 1 1/2" tall, 1 3/4" wide at the shoulder. The opening is 7/8" wide, so a lady would have to be an accurate spitter. I agree it's spittoon shaped, maybe just a mini cabinet piece. Prettier coloration than my photo shows.Edited 04-03-2018 01:33 PM
62
Lynda LaLonde04-03-201803:17 PM ET (US)IP: 174.131.116.250
Denise, #45... It is similar. But size is different. My jelly/jammer is 2 1/8 inches tall (verses 2 7/8) and 3 5/8 wide (verses 3 7/8). Same ruffels and glass ridging. My price was a WHOLE lot less also. Calling that piece a miniature finger bowl makes me question the sellers knowledge. Course, my knowledge is limited. It would be nice if the gang checked the auction out and gave their opinion.

Lynda: You have the actual H&J 406. I only used similar salts. Need pictures and measurements please. (See #55 below.)I think your blue threaded piece is a finger bowl. Those blown pieces will never have the exact measurements of each other.Edited 04-03-2018 10:16 PM

Debi, Huh, son of a gun. 55 is #406, Great catch, you have a good eye. I'll get the pictures and measurements to you. Finger bowl, ????.. need little fingers, or one finger at a time cleaning. Giggle....Well, you know your stuff so finger bowl it is. The ebay antique lady said her $299.00 similar, was a finger bowl. Live and learn.

Linda H, I have several small vases though I don't consider them a collection. I do have one other collection of miniature pitchers. Maybe when we develop an eye for salts, we focus on other smalls as well. I've found that I pick out anything that is about salt-sized.
79
nancy Villaverde04-04-201812:44 PM ET (US)IP: 97.99.220.53
Tiny square box, lovely quality, mark on the base not readable. It's not a salt but a thimble holder. It's only slightly over 1 inch square.
80
nancy Villaverde04-04-201812:51 PM ET (US)IP: 97.99.220.53
My collection of small pitchers, mostly EAPG. A couple are in patterns that included open salts. The ivory is the peacock pattern by Sowerby, and the black and clear are the old Ivy pattern. Metz named it Sandwich Ivy but a later book identified it as not EAPG but European. The blue Davidson is 2" tall to give idea of size of all.
81
nancy Villaverde04-04-201812:56 PM ET (US)IP: 97.99.220.53
Another 'not salts" small collection. I just couldn't resist these tiny pitchers, tallest about 2". I think the green enameled one is gorgeous. I bought a lot of 5 miniatures, all in the same glass and pattern, sold 4 for $100 each but kept this one. The ivory one is Wedgwood.

In post 80, the blue pitcher in center front is Hawaiian Lei pattern. I wanted a salt in that pattern because of all my years living in Hawaii. I bought a salt described as Hawaiian Lei from a pair of collectors a few years ago, but unfortunately they were wrong about ID. I settled for the little creamer. Maybe any "salt" would be an individual sugar anyway.

Jan: Your #91-92 is definitely a salt. It's shown on a Davidson catalog page under the banner of Salts, made in three sizes. I think that teal dish Lynda showed recently is also on that page as a salt. The catalog drawings are not 100% accurate but I think that's it.
118
Jan Schmidt04-06-201809:36 AM ET (US)IP: 98.23.11.243
Yes, that's the pattern all right, Debi, but this guy is HUGE! I have the smallest size in clear glass and there is no comparison, size-wise! Now if I were real ambitious I would grab it and measure it for you but, oh, it's too early to be that active for an old gal like me!

I have Jan's 91-92 in clear glass, always considered it a salt. #2950 in H&J.How big is huge, Jan? Just estimate your 91-92; no need to break your arm getting it out of a cabinet.I think my clear one is 3" wide.Edited 04-06-2018 12:48 PM

I dragged him back out, Nancy. He is 3 3/4 wide by 2 1/4 tall and weighs in at 12 oz. Do you think he is a salt after all? He was my first Sowerby and I thought he was a salt when I bought him but changed my mind once I got a look at him! I just sat him by the 3" clear one I also have, and I guess the difference isn't as much as I thought. I can post a pic later, if you want, of the two side by side.

Well just think, if someone breaks and enters ....you have a weapon. WHOP, KATHUD........Nahhhh, better a baseball bat, that's too pretty to chance breaking. Oh thank you the info on the white salt. I'll write it down and put it in the salt. Next weekend my daughter isn't working. I'm going to get her over here to help me find the tote with my glass shelves. Once I get them in the cabinets, I'll have a place for unpacked salts. For those of you who arn't totally sick of me and my pictures thank you

Piggies! More piggies! Love piggies! Used to raise them, growing up. Always loved their little pink wiggly noses and curly tails!OK, those two salts were made by Davidson in England, circa 1870- see Reprint AA in H&J OR go see the catalog pages Debi has in the REFERENCES section of this site. Yes, they are marked with the rampant lion mark. It is noted there that they came in three different sizes. I know it is shown in H&J somewhere but without legs, will look it up and get back with you. I am also pretty sure that Ed commented on that fact in SALTY COMMENTS.

We went like a bat out of hell at the beginning of the month and now we seem to have died. More not salts ???????
201
Lynda LaLonde04-15-201804:36 PM ET (US)IP: 174.131.116.250 Do we need any of these for H & J Project?
202
Lynda LaLonde04-15-201804:38 PM ET (US)IP: 174.131.116.250 What shall we call these? Do you think originally they had silver collars?
203
Linda H04-15-201805:41 PM ET (US)IP: 174.217.41.218

Jan Schmidt04-15-201809:27 PM ET (US)IP: 98.23.11.243
Lynda me dear, please to send first batch immediately for further perusal! They are commonly called pomades, held stuff like what we would call lip balm or balm today. I really likey the first one ooooh! You got my jealous up!
205
Jan Schmidt04-15-201809:27 PM ET (US)IP: 98.23.11.243
No meeting for me either, Linda and Lynda. I did catalogue and fondle lots of my collection though, does that count?
206
Lynda LaLonde04-15-201809:35 PM ET (US)
Linda H and Jannerooski, my love. True, no meeting here, but we did have a meeting of the minds on the message board. Pomades, gotta love those Victorians. They do match patterns in the salts. I'm with you Jan. That fat little 1st Pomade is a cutie. Built like me. I think the big one in my last picture might be a cold cream jar?

I think some of those pomades had glass or metal covers, but there are also a lot that had silver collars.
208

Listed as a salt, no dimensions given and I didn't ask! Matched an old fan vase I have. Upon arrival, it's twice the size of even a master/table salt. I wrote the seller and he offered my money back, but he admitted he didn't know salts. I kept it because it is beautiful and I never checked for size.

Linda - think you have the right answer Here a vase (in my salt-collection)

Jytte, lolololol, that is not a face a child would love. I was kidding. I'm not sure what Tobys were for but I know a lot of people like and collect them. Mary, I don't like Vaseline glass either. Except for the Davidsons. I do like the ones with opalesence. Changes the look of the Vaseline glass. I have to tell you why I just can't like Vaseline glass. Use to be, ages ago, I started I V's and added liquid multivitamins to it. Those patient's urine looked just like this glass and I can't get past that.Edited 04-20-2018 07:10 PM

Nancy D, I remember having some of those pretty bowls in yellow and blue with opalescent rims, berry or sauce bowls I think. I think they were about 4 inches wide. I still see this kind of bowl listed as a salt from time to time. I don't

know is sellers really don't know that salts aren't this large or just think calling it a salt will get more sales than calling it by its real name. Same with jam or jelly dishes.

nancy Villaverde04-23-201802:01 PM ET (US)IP: 97.99.220.53
I have 5 of these "face" cups, probably for sake I think though they make nice salts. This is the only woman in the group, which I think are the 7 immortals of Asian mythology. The second picture is of the inside, a musical instrument I think.

Here are all 5 faces. I think the two at lower right are the same character. The smaller one isn't from the same set as the others, smaller and with a different interior. All are glazed inside, which would make them good for serving a drink in them. A group of these are shown in some salt collectors' book, Smith I think.

My sister found all 7 or 8 of the Chinese immortals, don't remember which number. She had them framed in a deep frame, makes a neat wall decoration. I think maybe she found them on a visit to me in Honolulu, where there are so many Asian items.

Don, Did you see the glass that Jeff Evans auction is selling this weekend. Too big for salts but gorgious iridescent vases and other just beautiful peices? In the pictures of the meeting at your house, was that your collection of Roseville Pottery? I don't collect them but if I could I would. Been in love with Roseville, McCoy.... so many others, since my 20's.Edited 04-27-2018 05:48 PM

Didn't check the Jeff Auction, but best not, and be tempted! You may have seen Roseville in a photo, I have A LOT of it(not near as many salts as I have!) but I've been collecting it for about as long as I have salts! An example is in 6 in. Cornucopias, I have over 20 different ones! Enough said!
249
Lynda LaLonde04-28-201809:40 PM ET (US)IP: 173.191.96.82

I knew this wasn't a salt, but it's sooo pretty, red iridized outside, white inside, 2 1/2" tall. Kind of heavy, has a paper label that says made West Germany. The picture doesn't do it justice
252
Linda H04-30-201803:47 PM ET (US)IP: 174.217.22.192
I mentioned I have a lot of tea pots, well this is a chocolate pot in chintz transferware, 1890a to about 1920 I think. you can see that it's pretty tall compared to the salts.
