Newsletter – Term 1, Week 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A warm welcome back to all our returning students and their families for 2018.

Welcome also to all of our new students and their families who are newly

enrolled at Samuel Terry Public School. I have been very impressed by how

quickly our students have settled into their new classes for the year. We have

formed 21 classes this year as our enrolments have increased to 537 children

from Kindergarten through to Year 6. We look forward to another successful

year and we strive to continually build upon the achievements and gains over

the past few years.

New teaching Staff

Welcome to Mrs Haworth and Mrs Greentree who were both successful upon

merit selection in gaining appointments to Samuel Terry Public School. Mrs

Greentree is an experienced and highly regarded educator who was

previously Assistant Principal and part-time Principal of Werrington Public

School.

Mrs Greentree has been appointed as the Deputy Principal which is a new

position to our school now that we have consolidated numbers above the

enrolments threshold for the position. Mrs Greentree role in the school is very

broad in nature and includes supporting all students, teachers, SLSOs and

Assistant Principals from K-6.

Mrs Haworth is an experienced and highly regarded teacher who joins us from

Girraween Public School. She is teaching 1H and adds much knowledge and

skills to our already impressive teaching staff.

Early arrivals to school

Supervision of students begins at 8.30am in the school courtyard. Students

who arrive prior to this time are expected to attend the out of hours school

care which is now operated in the school hall. If you wish for your child to take

advantage of this service, contact Penrith City Council on 47 327 77.

Grade Supervision structure

The grade supervision structure is as followed:

Kindergarten – Mrs Goulden

Years 1 and 2 – Mrs Palmer

Years 3 and 4 – Ms Gray

Years 5 & 6 – Mrs Hudson

If you have any enquiries or concerns about your child please contact the classroom teacher in the first

instance. This will assist the issue being dealt with promptly in most situations and will help develop a

positive parent- teacher relationship. If an issue remains unresolved, please contact the relevant

Assistant Principal who supervises the grade (listed above). If the matter remains unresolved, the issue

is referred to the principal or deputy principal.

Very serious issues may be referred to the principal or deputy principal immediately.

Canteen volunteers

The school canteen desperately needs some parent helpers to assist, particularly in the busy period of

time in the morning. If you can spare any time from 30 minutes to a couple of hour, please contact

Sarah in the school canteen who would greatly appreciate any assistance provided.

Summer Sport

After much consideration, we have decided that it was in the best interests of our students to participate

in a skills based school sport program instead of Summer PSSA this year. The decision was based

upon a number of factors, mainly due to the competitions being run in the morning sessions on Friday

mornings.

A review by the PSSA coaches revealed that many teams were playing sport for minimal periods of

time, sometimes as little as 15 minutes due to some schools arriving late for games due to traffic and

late arriving students. Other schools organised their buses to pick them up earlier which resulted in

games having to be ended earlier than expected.

We have also been frustrated by the number of occasions the PSSA rounds are being cancelled due

either to weather forecasts on Thursday afternoons or a bit of rain on the Friday morning. The Friday

morning cancellations are often communicated to the school too late for us to avoid paying full bus

fares to the bus companies even though we aren’t using their services.

We will endeavour to enter Summer sport teams in the PSSA gala day which is a whole day event

during Term 1.

Winter PSSA will proceed as normal, particularly as it is held in the middle session in Terms 2 and 3.

We anticipate that the sports to be offered will include football (soccer), rugby league, Australian rules

and netball.

Student Banking

There will be no student banking until March 2.

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome back to our School Library! I hope

that this year will be the year that your child

“finds” that special book that will launch them

into a lifetime love of reading!

I believe that…

“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read, there are only children who

have not found the right book” - Frank Serafini

Borrowing

Students will be able to start to borrow from our school library next week. All students will be

able to borrow one book in Week 2. A few students have outstanding books that were identified

at the end of last year as overdue. While every effort is made to scan the books as they are

returned, sometimes they are returned to their correct place or not so correct place before they

can be scanned. If this happens while your child has returned the book to the

Library, in theory it is still on loan. With this in mind, a moratorium on

outstanding books will be in effect until a stocktake is undertaken this term.

After the stocktake I will issue overdue notes for all outstanding books from

2017 or earlier.

In order to borrow, however, all students must have a Library Bag. At the end

of last year, I purchased library bags from Scholastic.

They were on special, marked down from $6 to $3. I have purchased 60 of

them. If you would like your child to have one of these lovely bags, you can send $3 in an

envelope with your child’s name and class on it to the Library.

Book Club

Book Club catalogues will be handed out this week and are due on Friday 16 Feb in Week 3. At

the end of last year Samuel Terry changed over to LOOP, a new ordering system. In LOOP you

can choose to order online or you may download the LOOP app and order through that. Many of

you have already registered your account. So all you will have to do is go to scholastic.com.au/

LOOP and sign in.

You will no longer send payment to school; it will all be done through processing online.

New accounts can follow these easy steps…

Simply grab your child’s Book Club catalogue and REGISTER your account

Add your child’s first name and last initial (so the school knows who the book is for), then

select your SCHOOL and your CHILD’S CLASS.

NOTE: You can order for multiple children at once if they attend the same school.

Click on ORDER and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue.

All orders are linked directly to the school for submission to Scholastic. Books will still be

delivered to your child’s classroom if you order before the close date.

That’s it! There’s no need to return paper order forms or payment to the school.

BOOK FAIR

In Week 4, we will be holding our first BOOK FAIR this year in the Library. It will open on

Friday 23 Feb and finish on Wednesday 28 Feb.
