    Council President Tony Young hosted a SMART

    Business Solutions workshop showcasing how

    to do business with Walmart. Local business

    and community leaders attended the event, which

    was held at the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center.

    The meeting provided valuable inormation on how

    to work with Walmart covering topics rom how to

    become a contractor to how to become a national

    supplier as well as details about the companys

    uture growth in the San Diego region.

    As part o its commitment to support apprenticeship and

    minority contractors in the construction industry, Walmartpartnered with the Black Contractors Association (BCA) to

    host the organizations 29th Anniversary Gala. The Gala was

    a undraiser to support YouthBuild USA and to celebrate the

    BCAs past and present accomplishments. YouthBuild is a

    community development program providing job training,

    education and leadership development opportunities to

    unemployed and out-o-school young adults.

    environmental conservation in our communities, schools and governments, and we conduct outreach

    Caliornia State Giving Council

    recently awarded a $50,000

    grant to support CCSEs Green

    Learning Adventure program.

    Green Learning Adventure is an

    in-classroom enrichment program geared primarily toward students in grades fve through eight.

    The program eatures hands-on, interactive lesson modules ocused on global climate changeand sustainable living, teaching students how to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and

    implement other sustainable practices.

    Walmarts environmental goals include being supplied 100 percent by

    renewable energy, creating zero landll waste and selling products that

    sustain our environment.

    CCSE staf member Andrea Cook teaches students at the Scottish Rite Center in Mission

    Valley about how energy converts to electricity at a Caliornia Student Opportunity and

    Access Programs Career Fair.

    SummerGivingProgram:Walmart and the Walmart

    Foundation provided $1.77 million to help fll gaps

    created in San Diego when schools close or the

    summer. The unding is part o a $25 million nationwide

    initiative to expand nutrition, learning and employment

    services or elementary, middle and high school

    students throughout the summer months. Grants

    were provided to San Diego Unifed School District,

    THINK Together and the San Diego Park and Recreation

    Department.

    The summer giving grants will assist in two key areas:

    Providing162,100healthymealsandsnacksto

    San Diego area school-age children and a total o

    8 million healthy meals to more than 85,000 youth

    nationwide.

    Helping1,000localchildrenenrollinsummer

    learning programs and helping 20,000 youth

    nationwide participate in programs that will betterprepare them to return to school.

    Grants(Continued)SeniorCommunityCenters: Walmart recently provided a $15,000

    grant to the Senior Community Centers to und two o the important

    programs it provides or seniors. The grant will support the Transitional

    Housing Program, which provides temporary housing, health care

    services and daily meals to seniors in need. The contribution will

    also und a Diabetes Education Program, which allows the Senior

    Community Centers to sta a diabetes expert to educate seniors

    about the disease and provide them with diabetes testing strips and

    glucometers.Puttingsupportintoaction,16Walmartstoremanagers

    volunteered to serve lunch to senior citizens gathered at the Center.

    RedCrossHug-A-Hero:Walmart provided a $35,000 grant to

    the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter

    to support its Hug-A-Hero doll program. The program provides

    children o deployed military servicemembers with a doll that

    eatures a head-to-toe photograph o the recipients parent or loved

    one and a personalized message just or them.

    The Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter recognized

    Walmart or its contribution to this signifcant program at a recent

    event held at the residence o Rear Admiral and Mrs. William French.A Hug-A-Hero recipient holds close to her

    at Casa Familiars Abrazo dinner or its

    recent $50,000 grant to help support the

    organizations educational and job training

    services. Specifcally, this donation will allow

    Casa Familiar to expand its employment

    programs with a technology curriculum

    including hands-on computer courses. The

    grant will also support continuation o job

    placement skills including resume building

    and interviewing.

    WalmartFoundationCaliforniaStateGivingCouncil: The

    State Giving Council recently announced $100,000 in grants

    to San Diego nonproft organizations and programs, including

    the Caliornia Center or Sustainable Energy (CCSE), Reality

    Changers and Ater-School All-Stars San Diego. These grants

    will help the organizations achieve their missions in the criticalareas o sustainability and education.

    CCSE was provided $50,000 to continue its Green Learning

    Adventure program, aimed at educating elementary school

    children about the importance o living a greener lie. Reality

    Changers, San Diegos leading organization or providing

    college scholarships to disadvantaged youth, received a

    $25,000 grant to support its mission o providing inner-

    city youth with the resources they need to become frst

    generation college students. Ater-School All-Stars San Diego

    was awarded a grant or $25,000 to help provide San Diego

    students with out-o-school programs to keep them sae and

    help them be more successul in school and in lie.

    ProgramSponsorshipsPortablePools:Walmart provided unds to ensure the Linda Vista Portable Pool program could go on this

    year despite budget cuts. Funds will provide the Linda Vista Recreation Center with a portable pool, as well asthe ability to conduct ree swim lessons or children.

    associates staed a booth in the Health & Wellness

    Pavilion, where they talked with event attendees

    and vision program. Booth visitors received a ree

    reusable bag or carrying their estival goods.

    Walmart stores ofer a variety o afordable health and wellness items.

    Walmart sponsored the Health & Wellness Pavilion at the 2011

    Fiesta del Sol, which provided the 35,000 attendees inormation

    about healthy and active living.
