The mission of San Francisco Ballet School is to recruit talented students and to provide training of the highest caliber

in order to prepare them for professional careers in San Francisco Ballet and other companies.

Welcome to San Francisco Ballet School. This Handbook will provide the information to help make your study at SFBS

successful. Please take the time to read through it. If questions arise during the year that are not answered here, please contact the School Office, 415-865-6700.

About the School The singular goal of San Francisco Ballet School is to train and prepare students for a career with San Francisco Ballet and other companies. The program is designed to take students from their very first step through a comprehensive curriculum of classical ballet studies. The formidable curriculum emphasizes a strong classical technique and a flow of movement that suggests a sense of energy, freedom, and joy, reflecting the kind of dancing favored by San Francisco Ballet. It is a style that readily adapts to meet the demands of any choreographer or company, and any type of movement. Admission is by audition only. Girls and boys are placed in one of eight levels according to age, experience, and ability. They follow a structured sequence of training stages designed to increase their technical skills, stamina, and discipline. The program includes classes in technique, pointe work, pas de deux, men's technique, contemporary dance, music, and character dance classes. All ballet and character classes are taught to live piano accompaniment, a crucial element in developing the students’ understanding of the relationship between music and movement. Inherent in the teaching of ballet are frequent corrections. Students are verbally and/or physically guided by the teacher to ensure proper body alignment and body placement. For those who desire a career in ballet, San Francisco Ballet School offers a training program of unqualified excellence. Over fifty percent of the dancers in San Francisco Ballet received all or part of their training at the School. Students have also gone on to dance with such companies as American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, English National Ballet, Houston Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Miami City Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, New York City Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, Ballet Memphis, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Dutch National Ballet. Upon completion of their studies at San Francisco Ballet School, students neither receive diplomas nor are they considered graduates. Although they have finished their formal studies, dancers never stop learning; after all, they begin each day with a class. A dancer’s education is an ongoing process, one that continues throughout their career. Even those students whose paths lead to non-dance careers gain immeasurably from having studied at the School. They develop self-motivation, self-discipline, poise, grace, and an appreciation for the arts, which they carry with them throughout their lives.

Building and Arrival/Departure Information

SF Ballet Building The School shares space with the Company at San Francisco Ballet’s Chris Hellman Center for Dance, enabling aspiring dancers to experience a sense of the professional ballet world. Following is information about arriving and departing for class at the Ballet building.

Arrival Please make sure your child arrives to class at least 5-10 minutes before class begins, ready to learn and work. A late arrival does not allow a student enough time to prepare and compose him or herself, and can therefore be the cause of injuries. Late arrivals also disrupt class concentration. Students late to any class may be asked to sit and observe class.

Note: Students must wear street clothes or a cover-up over their ballet attire when arriving to and departing from the Ballet building. Ballet slippers and warm-up booties are never to be worn outside of the building; this is for the students’ safety and to protect the dance studio floors.

Parents are welcome to wait in the lobby for their children while they are in ballet class. If parents have specific business or questions for the School, please ask the lobby attendant to contact the School Office, and we will be happy to assist you. The School Office has an open door policy; however, building security procedures must be followed. If you need to have a conversation with a staff member or a teacher, it is helpful for you to call in advance and set up a meeting time.

Departure Please remember that SFBS is not a child-care provider. Our fees do not reflect supervision outside of the studio. Students must leave floors 2 and 4 at the end of their class or rehearsal. Students must wait for pick up in the lobby and should not wait outside in the drive-through or on the sidewalk as the lobby receptionist does not monitor these areas. Students must be picked up within 15 minutes of the end of their class. If you are unable to pick up your student in a timely fashion, kindly call the Ballet building lobby receptionist at 415.861.5600. Parents will be charged a fee of $25.00 per 1/4 hour for any time the staff must wait beyond the allowed pick-up time.

Drive-Through In order to keep students safe while entering and exiting the Ballet building, please note the following information.

Please use the drive-through for dropping-off and picking-up students and avoid using Franklin Street.

Parents are not permitted to park in the drive-through at any time. The turn-out in the drive-thru is for SFB authorized personnel only and must be left available always.

If your passengers are not immediately available for pick-up, please exit the drive-through and pull around again.

Parking, Public Transportation and Directions For a map of MUNI and BART stops, and parking lots in the area, please see: school.sfballet.org/directions Parking lots used by the Ballet and Opera employees are strictly off limits for students and parents. If you park on the street, please note that the meters are monitored and towing zones will be enforced. Never leave valuables in your car. Personal items left in view are an attractive target for thieves.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend every class for which they are scheduled. Consistent attendance is critical to progress. It is essential that students arrive to class on time and are ready to work and learn.

REPORTING INDIVIDUAL ABSENCES

Illness, transportation problems, and other last minute special circumstances If a student is ill and is possibly contagious, please keep him/her at home until well.

WHEN: ALL absences MUST be reported at least 15 minutes before the scheduled class time to be considered excused. Any student who leaves class early due to illness should notify the School Office before departing

HOW: Absences may be reported on the ABSENCE LINE or by EMAIL Absences will only be excused upon receipt of a message on the absence line or school email.

HOW: Requests for extended absences may only be submitted by EMAIL. Absences will only be excused upon receipt of a written request on the school email, and by approval of the Director.

ABSENCES DUE TO INJURY

WHEN: Injuries and accidents must be reported immediately to the School Administration.

HOW: Please call the School Office, 415-865-6700, and speak to a member of the School Staff. At the discretion of the School Administration, the student’s teacher and the student’s physician, an amended class schedule may be made. Any injured student is required to submit a doctor’s note describing the injury, prognosis, recovery time, and the program of therapy for recovery. A follow-up doctor’s note (enclosed) will be required before a student will be permitted to return to class. Please print copies of the Doctor’s Note as needed; copies are also available in the School Office.

RECOVERY: Doctor’s appointments and physical therapy schedules must be reported to the School Administration. Appointments should not conflict with the student’s SFBS schedule. A follow-up doctor’s note is required permitting an injured student to return to class.

An injured student may not be permitted to rehearse or perform in the Student Showcase or Company productions.

Attendance

Continued Absences An absence, whether excused or unexcused, is time that a student misses out on their training. An absence is identified as a missed class where the proper notification/request for time off has been recorded. An unexcused absence is one where the request/notification was not communicated in advance or when incomplete information is provided.

Excessive Absences Excessive absences (whether excused or not) may hinder the promotion of a student and/or result in dismissal from the School. A monthly review of attendance will be conducted by the School Administration. Students found with multiple absences may be subject to the following consequences: parent meeting with School Administration, scholarship reduced or revoked, dismissal from the School. A student may not participate in a Company rehearsal or Performance if they have not attended their School classes. If a student is suspended or dismissed from the School, they may not participate in rehearsals or performances with the Company.

Make-up and additional classes When a student in Levels 1 through 3 has an excused absence, the student may make-up the absence in an alternate class. A maximum of three classes may be made up per year. The make-up class must be within their assigned Level; For example, 2A may take 2B. When the parent/guardian calls in to report the absence, please indicate the date that the student will attend the alternate class. If the make-up date is not yet determined, please call back at least one day in advance of the intended make-up class. The class must be made up within one week of the excused absence. Families may not abuse this policy to make a personal ballet schedule for their student—this is for specific and occasional absences and up to a maximum of three dates per year. When a student in Levels 4 through 8 has an excused absence, the student should come to the School Office to inquire about scheduling a make-up class. Outside of the make-up classes, students are not permitted to take additional classes unless assigned or granted permission by the Director.

Late Arrivals When a student arrives late to class or misses the first in a series of classes on a day, they are missing the necessary preparations to ensure they are warm and stretched, which prevents injuries. If a student arrives late to class, it will be at the teacher’s discretion if the student may participate or not that day. Students who miss the first in a series of classes on any day must check in with the School Office upon arrival. Students will not be permitted to participate in subsequent classes or rehearsals if they do not fully participate in their technique class.

Work Schedules and Doctor’s Appointments Upper level students must arrange their work schedules, doctor’s, and physical therapy appointments around their commitments with the School and Company.

Student Showcase Students in Levels 2-6 will be invited to participate in Student Showcase. Level 7 and 8 students must be available to attend all Student Showcase rehearsals and performances. Casting of Showcase performances is at the sole discretion of the School.

Company Productions Students in Levels 1-6 may be invited to participate in rehearsals and performances with the Company. Level 7 and 8 students must make themselves available for rehearsals and performances with the Company as well as SFB fundraising or promotional events, even if the dates conflict with academic school vacations, holidays, or breaks. Students may not participate in Company rehearsals or performances if they have not attended their regularly scheduled classes. Levels 7 and 8 students with dancing roles in Company productions may only take Company class if they have been assigned to do so by the Artistic Staff.

Rules and Policies

Students must direct their full energy to their ballet studies, maintain self-discipline, and provide leadership and a helpful attitude at all times. Decorum and discipline are an important part of ballet training. Every student in the School is expected to adhere to the rules and policies. All students must be courteous to each other; respectful of faculty, staff, and Company members; maintain quiet in the halls, and refrain from horseplay and other disruptive behavior while inside the Ballet building. SF Ballet School, at the sole discretion of its Administration, reserves the right to suspend or dismiss any student whose performance, conduct, or attendance is found unsatisfactory. For the good of all students, it is imperative for each individual to accept the responsibility of upholding School rules and policies. Students should report any activity they believe violates the School rules. Uniform and Hygiene

All students must adhere to the established School uniform. Students may be prohibited from taking class if not

dressed appropriately. All ballet clothing must be clean and in good repair. Dancewear must be laundered regularly.

Ballet shoes should be allowed to air-out between classes. A good way to do this is to keep ballet shoes in a net bag

that allows air circulation.

Hygiene: Students must practice good hygiene habits. Students of pubescent age and older, should use deodorant

daily and must shower after class.

Student Behavior

Bullying, harassment, or discrimination (including via social media) will not be tolerated. Students who witness

bullying, harassment, or discrimination should report it to their teacher or the School Office immediately.

Ballet Classroom Etiquette

Out of respect for the class environment, the teacher, and fellow classmates, students are not permitted to leave

class unless permission is granted by the teacher.

Talking in class is not permitted. It is disrespectful and disturbing to the teacher and other students. Teachers are

not to be interrupted when they are giving instructions, corrections, or demonstrating exercises. If students have a

question, they should raise their hand and wait to be called on.

Only bottled water is allowed in the studio. Food, gum, or other drinks are prohibited in the studio. Eating and

drinking is allowed in the hallway and in the School Library. Litter is to be disposed of in available waste and recycling

containers.

The restrooms are to be used prior to and after class. Having to leave in the middle of class is disrupting. If there is

an emergency, the student should raise their hand and asked to be excused.

Students should not place anything on or in the pianos.

Students may not use the studio sound systems or DVD players without permission.

Students may not use cell phones, computers, tablets, or cameras in the studios.

Students may not film or take photographs in the studio without permission from the Director.

Hairspray, baby powder, or any other products are not to be used in the studio. These products can cause the dance

floors to become too sticky or slippery.

In the Building

Students may post approved messages and/or notices on the Student bulletin board. It is considered defacement of

property to affix anything to the walls of the building.

Students may watch school and Company classes and rehearsals from the doorway but must remain quiet and

respectful of the dancers who are working.

Photography/videography of Company members in the building is strictly prohibited.

Rules and Policies

Continued Attendance at Special Events

When students are at School or SF Ballet sponsored performances or events, they should conduct themselves

appropriately as representatives of SFBS. This includes times when students are assigned to attend an event or if

they have purchased a ticket to a SFB event.

Students are NOT permitted to attend any SFB events in which alcohol is openly served. Students may request to

attend the Opening Night Gala Dinner or Student Showcase Dinner only if they will be accompanied by a

parent/guardian. Students are never permitted to attend the Gala After Party, Employee Holiday Party or the

Company End of Season Party, even if they have been invited as a guest. Students found at an event without

permission from School Administration may result in immediate dismissal.

Prohibited Items

Drugs/Alcohol: Possession or use of alcohol and/or drugs of any nature is not permitted and is considered grounds for

immediate dismissal. Students suspected of drug use may be subject to drug testing. Smoking is not permitted in the

San Francisco Ballet building at any time by California law. It is illegal for students under 21 years of age to purchase or

use cigarettes.

Knives, lighters, and flammable liquids are not permitted in the SFB Building. If students need these items to prepare

pointe shoes, they should be used at home.

Outside Classes, Performances, Photoshoots

Students may not participate in dance competitions, ballet classes, photoshoots, rehearsals, or performances with

outside groups (amateur or professional) without written permission from the Director. Failure to receive written

permission is grounds for immediate dismissal. Requests for participation in outside activities should be sent to

school@sfballet.org.

Locker Rooms

Level 1-2 Students should arrive in their dancewear no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of their class. Students in these levels may NOT use the locker-room located on the 2nd floor for changing. Students should wait in the lobby near the elevators until their teacher or staff member comes to take them to their studio. Any items brought with them must be stored in the hallway outside their studio. Students should not bring any valuables to the Ballet School.

Level 3-8 Students may use the locker-room for changing and must store all belongings in a locker during class. Only water and pointe shoes may be brought into the studios. Students must provide their own lock and it is the student’s responsibility to secure all personal items in their locker.

Locker Room Policies

Students must supply their own locks and should keep lockers locked and maintain confidentiality regarding

combinations. Please do not bring valuables to the Ballet School. SFBS is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Students may only bring necessary items (pointe shoes and water bottles) into the studio. All other items should be

stored in a locker during class. It is the student’s responsibility to properly store all items.

Lockers are the property of the School. The School reserves the right to access individual lockers at any time with or

without the user's permission.

Locker rooms are for dressing; students are not to loiter in them.

Lockers should not be decorated with stickers or any substance which may cause damage.

Locker room use is a privilege. Any vandalism to the physical state of the dressing room or students’ personal property

will result in the closure of the locker room to ALL students.

Students must be respectful of other’s property. Any student found stealing or vandalizing the locker room may be

subject to immediate dismissal.

Lost & Found There is a “Lost & Found” box located in each locker room and on the 2nd floor near the School Office. To help identify lost items, students are encouraged to label all shoes and clothing items with their name. The lost and found is cleared out at the end of each semester and at the end of each summer program.

Orientations, Observations, Evaluations, and Examinations

Student Orientations

Orientation for all students will be incorporated into their class schedule during the first week. Staff will review the School rules, absence reporting, and emergency procedures. All information reviewed in the student orientations may also be found in this handbook for reference.

Parent Orientations

New parents are required, and returning parents are encouraged, to attend one of the parent orientations for an overview of the SFBS program and information about their child’s classes. All information reviewed at the parent orientations may also be found in this handbook for reference. Orientation dates will be sent out to families when available.

Information about San Francisco Ballet School is also available on our website, school.sfballet.org. In addition to historical information about the School, you can find a wealth of information about San Francisco Ballet.

Class Observations for Parents

The School and the San Francisco Ballet building are closed to visitors; however, once a year, parents/guardians are invited into the studio to observe class. This is an opportunity to experience ballet class from start to finish: barre and center. This observation is NOT open to the public (extended family, friends, siblings etc.), but is for parents/guardians to observe their student's progress. Class observations are usually scheduled to occur in November or December. Observation dates will be announced in the fall. Parents may not observe class at other times, as it is a distraction to the students. Cameras and video equipment are NOT permitted in the studios during observations.

Student Evaluations All students in Levels 1 through 8 receives two written evaluations per year. The evaluations will include information on the student’s technical development, attendance, and conduct. In addition, each student will have an opportunity for one conference with their primary teacher and the student’s parent/guardian. Level 4 Girls and Boys mark the end of the of the beginner’s division. At this point, commitment, focus, and discipline have been demonstrated. Students who are invited to continue in the School must meet the minimum standards regarding pointe work (for girls) and strength. The student’s feet, flexibility, turnout at the hips, structure, and proportions are also taken into consideration, as these physical attributes are generally considered requisite for professional accomplishment in classical ballet. Levels 5 – 6 Girls and Boys are the intermediate levels of our School. Students who are invited to move on to Levels 7 and 8, our advanced levels, are those whom we feel may have the potential for a career in classical ballet. These students are evaluated for talent, technical development, and artistic merit.

Year-End Examinations End of year exams will be held towards the end of the spring semester. In the usual class setting, students will be asked to demonstrate the steps they’ve been learning over the course of the year, which are part of the established curriculum. Instructors will prepare their students for the exam by teaching them a set of steps for both barre and center. Together with the instructor, Mr. Armand will conduct the exams for each class. This will aid in the evaluation of each student to determine their placement for the next school year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the School Office hours? A. The School Office is staffed Monday through Saturday starting at 9:30am through the last class of the day. Q. How will the School communicate with SFBS families? A. The School will send the majority of all correspondence to the primary family email address as listed on the enrollment

forms. Please make sure to check your email regularly and update the School Office should your contact information change.

Q. My child was sick last class and I called the absence line. He’s still sick…do I need to call again? A. Yes. Please call the absence line 415.865.6772 or email school@sfballet.org to report EACH absence. Q. My child has been ill/injured a lot this semester and I have been diligent about calling in the absences. Will

excused absences adversely affect his/her evaluation? A. The instruction for each level is set in such a way that it is cumulative and has a building block effect as new concepts

are introduced often. In addition, part of the challenge and routine of ballet is the repetition—until the movement becomes part of “muscle memory”. Excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, may hinder the student’s progress.

Q. Our family is planning a vacation that will conflict with SFBS classes. What should I do? A. Submit an extended absence request to school@sfballet.org at least two weeks prior to the date/s of absence. It is

best to make your request as soon as the information is available to you. Please be aware that if the request conflicts with rehearsals or performances, you may need to make a choice between your trip and the performance. We make every effort to accommodate these requests.

Q. Are classes offered in the summer? A. The School offers full day intensive summer programs for students in Levels 4-8. More information will be available in

November on the School’s website. Ballet Camp for Levels 1-3 will be announced in December. Q. Is my student eligible to participate in Nutcracker? A. San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker performances are in December of each year—usually about 30 performances split

between two casts. All the children you see on stage are SFBS students. Auditions for roles take place in September. Students in Levels 1-6 and who reach nine years of age by December 12, 2017 (no exceptions) are eligible to audition. Casting is at the sole discretion of the Company’s Artistic staff.

Q. Is my student eligible to participate in the Student Showcase? A. Students in Levels 2-8, are eligible to participate in the Student Showcase, which takes place May 23-25, 2018.

Information about mandatory rehearsals and performances will be distributed in early spring. Level 7 and 8 Students must be available to attend all Student Showcase rehearsals and performances. Casting of Showcase performances is at the sole discretion of the School.

Emergency Procedures

These emergency procedures will be reviewed with students during their first week of classes. In the event of an EARTHQUAKE: 1. The teacher will give the DROP AND COVER (D & C) command. 2. Students/teacher/pianist must move away from windows, mirrors, skylights, etc. 3. Drop to knees, clasp both hands behind neck, bury face in arms, make body as small as possible, close eyes, and cover

ears with forearms 4. Do not evacuate unless specifically ordered to do so. 5. Stay alert for aftershocks. Relocate to a safer area in preparation for aftershocks if necessary. 6. Students in the locker-room will D&C facing away from any windows or mirrors.

In the event of a FIRE or building EVACUATION: 1. When the alarm sounds, assume it is an emergency that requires evacuation. 2. Students will line up at the door with the teacher at the head of the line and the pianist at the end of line. The teacher

will lead the class to the nearest safe emergency exit. The last person out MUST close all doors. 3. Students should leave all belongings in the room. Teacher/pianist will take the roll book. Girls will stay in pointe shoes. 4. Students in the locker-room, lobby or bathroom will evacuate with their class or the nearest group. Students should find

their class at the evacuation site. 5. The evacuation site is the parking lot between the War Memorial Opera House and the Veteran’s Auditorium. 6. If a parent wishes to take a child from the evacuation site, please notify the teacher. 7. Remain at the evacuation site until an official deems the building safe for re-entry. 8. Await further instructions from a designated official.

Parents/Guardians are asked to follow these building emergency guidelines if they are present in the building during an evacuation.

In the event of a building LOCK DOWN: If students hear the word “LOCKDOWN” either from an Instructor, School Administrative Staff, or broadcast via the telephone system:

1. Assume that it is a real emergency and lock yourself in the nearest secure room: Locker room, Faculty Lounge, Library, Studio, or Pianist Office.

2. If Students are taking class, listen to directions from the instructor and pianist. 3. Students will be directed to move to an area of the room as far away from the doors as possible, avoiding walls with

windows and mirrors. 4. The instructor will:

a. Lock the studio door(s) with the key provided for the purpose (hanging on a lanyard adjacent to the doorway). b. Cover the window located in the studio door with the blind provided for the purpose (mounted to the wall adjacent

to the studio door). c. Turn off the lights in the studio and instruct the children to remain quiet while awaiting emergency personnel.

Physician Instructions Ballet training requires each student to be able to completely participate in a full range of sustained, repetitive, vigorous physical activities including but not limited to quick movements, bending, twisting, running, leaping and lifting, which place extreme demands on the human body, including stress of joints and ligaments, repetitive impact, and occasional falls, slips and collisions with other participants and objects. Scholarships and Financial Aid

Merit Based Scholarships SF Ballet School offers a limited number of scholarships available to intermediate and advanced-level students, based on the potential to achieve a professional career in ballet. Scholarships are awarded at the time of invitation to the program. Scholarships are awarded for a limited time, either one school year and/or summer program. All students pay the $200 registration fee.

Community Scholarship Program, Continuing Scholarship (formerly Dance In Schools Continuing Scholarship) Select students from the one-year Community Scholarship Program class (CSP), who show exceptional aptitude for classical ballet, are awarded a full tuition scholarship for continued attendance at SF Ballet School as long as the student progresses as necessary up though level 5. After level 5, when the CSP Continuing Scholarship is no longer available, families will be responsible for the regular tuition. Students may be awarded a merit scholarships based on their potential to achieve a professional career. Additionally, any family may apply for financial aid. All students pay the $200 registration fee.

Financial Aid SF Ballet School offers a limited amount of need-based financial aid to students enrolled in Levels 1-8. Financial aid is not available for other programs including Pre-Ballet. The number of awards is dependent upon contributions and careful consideration is given to all requests for assistance. Families may apply once their student has received their invitation for the school year or summer program. Registration Fees will not be covered by financial aid. Financial aid is awarded for a limited period of time— either one school year and/or summer program. Families must reapply each year to be considered.

Families may apply for financial aid by using the TADS Financial Aid Assessment, an online tool specifically tailored to evaluate financial need for SF Ballet School. Print the TADS Worksheet to help gather all the necessary information. The Financial Aid Application Deadline for returning families was May 1, 2017; The deadline for new families is two weeks following the student’s invitation to the school year program. Families are highly encouraged to apply as early as possible. All students pay the $200 registration fee.
