Hello San Remo Shores Neighbors,

As hurricane Irma was heading our way we were all scrambling to see what insurance

coverage we had, what was our deductible, and last but not least, we worried that we were

underinsured. With that in mind, the board has invited Deb Merrick from Boyd Insurance as

on Cortez Road.

This will be my last chaired meeting as Greg and I are moving to Texas. After living in

rural America for most of our lives, we are heading back to the country. Please help keep San Remo Shores

a thriving association, reach out to take a Board position and help the remaining board members with projects,

and volunteer to fill the empty board seats.

We’ve truly loved our time here in Bradenton getting to know all of you and we look forward to spending

more time with you until our home sells.

I hope to see you at the meeting. Sandra

The Board is looking for a new president to take over the wonderful job Sandra has

Members of our group had an outing to the Sarasota Kennel Club in the café (with a great

window view) in February. Our expectations were not only to have a lovely luncheon, but to have

a lucrative afternoon. We studied the racing forms, looked at

race times and calculated the class of each race; and then with

a time-old tradition of picking the

dogs with the names we liked and how handsome each dog

was in each race. Regardless whether our strategy worked

or not; we had a fun afternoon.

Our next outing will be to the Marietta Museum of Art

& Whimsy, on April 6th.Lynda, is our hostess for this

event and she will need you to RSVP by April 1st call or

text her at 630-399-0251 and get more details. A $5.00

donation in cash or check – meet at 12:30 PM.

If you have an idea for an outing, please contact me; and I will gladly

give you any help I can to bring it to fruition.

In February, we welcomed new members to our club, Charlotte S,

Libby C and Joanne T. We would love to have you join us too!

As always, I wish all of our members a healthy and fun-filled spring.

SEE FOR YOURSELF THE FUN THE WOMEN’S CLUB HAS BEEN HAVING….

The Holiday Party in December was a lot of fun with friends sharing food and beverages. Pam Willis hosted it. There

was some present snatching going on too!!

Another outing found some of us at a coed event at Siesta Key Rum

Distillery in

Sarasota. All

decked out for the

holidays it was

lots of rum…oh I

mean “lots of

fun!!”

Lore Scharr, our honorary member, turned 100 in February and she

thanks the SRS Women's Club for the beautiful floral arrangements

for the celebration. "I am overwhelmed by your caring and

generosity. Thank you all." >

Manatee County Federation - Sandy Marshall - 941 792-5039

Healthcare Advisory Board (HAB) Update

On February 28, 2018, County Staff will seek HAB approval of Staff’s proposed 2018 county healthcare

budget of $27.2 million funded by our county taxpayers, which includes $6 million a year for Indigent Care and

$6 million for inmate care at our County Jail.

Unfortunately, staff is not pursuing available healthcare models outside Manatee County, or fully

implementing the recommendations of the county hired consultant to reduce the above $27.2 million. This is

contrary to one of the key directives in the Manatee County Commission Resolution appointing HAB.

I am personally contacting sources within and outside of Florida for information to submit to HAB and the

Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) to develop an appropriate cost-efficient plan for Manatee County.

SHOULD THE BOCC CAP IMPACT FEE AT 90% INSTEAD OF 100% ON APRIL 18, 2018 REQUESTED BY DEVELOPERS?

The answer is “NO”! If approved by the BOCC, following public hearings, on March 1 and 7, 2018 by BOCC; the taxpayers will lose

$2 million dollars a year of funds from our county budget, requiring existing taxpayers to pay this sum, instead of new growth. To

prevent this, please email, write of phone your County Commissioner to vote NO, if you agree.

Treasurer - Pam Willis 917 763-3843 [email protected]

As of 2/23/18, we have received dues from 90 households; 40% of the neighborhood - 5% ahead of this time last year. Thank you for supporting your neighborhood! A shout out to Joanne and Anthony Tevere on Plumosa for assisting with the printing, folding, stuffing process for the dues mailing. The 2017 Cash Flow is available by request; please send your request to [email protected]

Thank you to all of you who have paid dues and special thanks for those who included an extra sum!

Pam

ROADS AND GROUNDS CHAIR AND WEBMASTER NEEDED

LIKE FATHER – LIKE SON -Gary Forster has been a powerhouse of reliability and dedication to San Remo Shores as

was his father before him. We will miss him so much and want to express our gratitude. Besides our Roads and

Grounds Chair, he is also our Webmaster and sends out email blasts. In his honor, we are looking for several folks

that will be on a Roads & Grounds Committee and computer savvy folks to handle the web etc. HELP us out. Call

President, Sandra Glantz with an offer to help.

Roads and Grounds – Gary Forster - [email protected] 941-795-2701 Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste – Cleaning out my garage, I found lots of old cans of paint, bottles of

insecticide, cleaners of all sorts, and old fertilizer. I know I’m not alone. The county says if the label

includes “POISON, DANGER, WARNING and/or CAUTION,” it’s hazardous and should be brought

to the landfill the THIRD SATURDAY of any month for safe disposal. That’s out East Manatee SR

64, then right on Lena Rd; a 30-minute drive. There’s some new restaurants out that way to make

your trip more enjoyable!

Thanks for your patience. The near-miss hurricane took down the floodlight over our community

bulletin board. Several of you told me you really missed it, so I found a super-efficient LED and built

a hanger to hold it out from the palm tree. The storm, in addition to burning many of our neighbor’s

plants and trees, also damaged the flowers we had planted at the entrance. To add insult to injury,

it also broke a sprinkler connection, so they didn’t recover. Jeb’s (Stewart Landscaping) guys dug up the problem and

fixed it, and I planted some creeping-petunias to add some color. But we need a new scheme for this spring and summer.

Please give your SRS board your ideas, and when you could volunteer.

My wife Meg and I have been a part of your community ever since we helped move my parents here from Cleveland

almost 37 years ago. We’re sad to say good-bye but can’t wait to spend much more time with our

1-year-old grandson, his parents, and his uncle and aunt! We’re looking for an apartment in

Bellingham, Washington, the end of the line for the Alaska State Ferry; the other end of which is

a short walk from their home in Haines Alaska. If we freeze or rust in the northwest, you might

see us back here some day! Thanks for your friendship. -- Gary

DOG OWNERS ARE REQUESTED TO PICK UP

SOLID DOG WASTE, BAG IT AND DISPOSE OF IN

TRASH (not in yard waste or recycle bins) Pick up after your pet (in your space as well as others), bag your dog’s waste and never put waste into storm drains! Dog waste is more than just a cosmetic issue. Stepping in it is no longer comical. Consumer Reports said dog waste ranked No. 6 on the list of America’s Top Gripes in 2010, or that the Environmental Protection Agency lists pet waste as one of its top water-pollution concerns. E. coli bacteria from dog droppings has been identified as a significant pollutant to our parks, rivers and regional watersheds. The EPA places dog waste in the same health category as oil and toxic chemicals. EPA researchers are tracking how unclaimed dog waste washes from green spaces to storm drains and then into our waterways. The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program notes, “An average-size dog dropping produces 3 billion fecal coliform bacteria.” The estuary program’s website also points out: “Pet waste is a significant source of fecal coliform bacteria entering our bays. Approximately 26 tons of pet waste is deposited on the ground in Sarasota and Manatee counties every day. Dog poop does not stay on the grass but gets washed down the storm drains and delivered untreated to the closest waterway during rain events.” Rainwater can wash those little presents your pooch leaves on the ground into canals leading to bays, or directly to the bay itself. Just like human waste, dog poop poses a threat to both public health and water quality, can make people ill, as well as cause algae blooms and rob the water of oxygen needed to support fish and other aquatic life.

So, be a good neighbor. Don’t “pooh-pooh” the need to follow the recommendations and help keep our canals, bay, environment and community attractive and healthy.
