As one of thefastest-growing seg-ments of the housingmarket, first-timehomebuyers are driv-ing the demand forsmaller, less expen-sive new homes.Between 2007 and2009, 41 percent ofthe 8.4 million Ameri-cans who purchaseda home were first-timebuyers. The typicalfirst-time homeownerwas 34 years old andhad a household in-come of $67,000.They purchasedhomes with an aver-age market value ofabout $184,000, com-pared to $297,000 fortrade-up buyers.The large majority offirst-timers purchasedsingle-family de-tached homes that av-eraged 1,874 squarefeet — well below the2,549 square foot
home chosen by re-peat homeowners.Close to half of them(46 percent) boughthomes smaller than1,500 square feet.On average, first-time buyers looked at15 properties beforemaking a final deci-sion. While 63 percentused saving for theirdownpayment, 22percent made nodownpayment at all.Although some ofthe growth amongfirst-time homeownershas been fueled bythe government’s taxcredit, this upwardtrend should continueas the children of
