#4: Ensure timely delivery and effective tracking
Ensure the project gets off to a good start with the right estimation, competent
resources, and a clear understanding of the scope and approach by the steering
committee and project team
Have the right level of detail in your plan and schedule so they are manageable
and create a strong foundation for the progress reporting you need
Make sure the interdependencies are understood and quality and risk management
activities are included in the schedule
Use third parties (internal or external) to determine key deliverables and their

#5: Staff the project with sufficiently skilled, motivated people

resources, and ensure business side is well represented

consultants, and check that team is functioning well throughout the implementation

responsibilities and project objectives are well defined

#7: Identify and manage risks jointly throughout the project
Risk management is a key prerequisite for project transparency and, subsequently,
success.
A risk register is the central repository for listing all risks, their impact, and the
mitigation actions and their owners so that effective risk monitoring is possible.
Managing risks is an ongoing and iterative process, not a one-time activity.
The results of the risk management exercise are key inputs for project governance
meetings, such as the steering committee, to ensure that early corrective measures
are taken for risks (or for actual issues).

#8: Exploit standard software using solution/delivery best practices
SAP Best Practices can save time and money and at the same time add much more
value to the business
SAP Best Practices can be used as a significant lever for transformational change in
the organization and how it works
Custom development can be justified if it really supports unique business processes,
but be careful about the extended maintenance required
SAP Best Practices should be used to eliminate hidden costs of complexity and
simplify business processes, which allows you to be on track for not just the best
today but also tomorrow

#9: Achieve production readiness
Plan the ALM approach early in the project, and have it ready for going live
Properly train technical staff and support teams
Include seasoned resources with experience in operations on the teams
Have support agreements and service-level agreements in place and well
understood by the support team and administrators
Have a good understanding of and test backup and recovery strategies
Have clear procedures in place for software patches and upgrades
Use performance measures, and gather user feedback to optimize support

#10: Use organizational change management to transform business
Manage change from a technical and process perspective using project management
Manage change from a people perspective using change management
Identify and educate change sponsors and change agents early on, building change
management competencies at all levels
Establish business transformation objectives and a road map at the very beginning
Develop a communication plan and a training plan as a key change management
activity
Start early, and don’t underestimate the effort
