Cloud: Game Changer or Hype?

The buzz around cloud computing has reached a fever pitch

Some believe it is a disruptive trendrepresenting the next stage in the evolution of the Internet.

Others believe it is hype, as it uses long established computing technologies.

As with any new trend in the IT world

Organizations must figure out the benefits and risks of cloud computing and the best way to use this technology.

Virtualization

So, to summarize our 30,000 feet view

Cloud Computing and the Cloud imply many different aspects and elements. These "dimensions" can be combined arbitrarily. Therefore there exist dozens or even more variants of cloud computing and clouds.

So, it does not make sense to talk about cloud computing or the cloud in general. Instead, each cloud offering has to be examined for its comprised combinations of aspects and elements.

Interesting questions about a specific service offering are: Is the cloud offering of type IaaS,

PaaS, or SaaS? Is the cloud public, private,

hybrid, or virtual private? Does the service provider also

develops the service? …
