Challenges Solutions

BASF IT Services GmbH as BASF’s own IT service

provider operates mission critical systems for the world’s

leading chemical company. For ensuring the availability of

their mission critical business systems; in this case

COBALT (Consolidated BASF Accounting, Logistics and

Technic System). BASF IT Services puts up the demand

for a separate disaster recovery site. In case of a disaster

at least the operations of the most critical SAP systems

should be switched to DR-Site.

The virtualization assessment with focus on VMware was

performed to examine the possibility of building a virtualized

disaster recovery site (DR-site) in the SAP Landscape of

BASF. The DR-Site should be virtualized to maintain the

flexibility to use the environment during normal operations of

productive systems as an environment for project or quality

insurance systems.

Results Customer quote

As a result, the customer’s requirements for the DR-site

can be realized using VMware technologies. BASF will be

able to operate the quality insurance landscape in a

virtualized environment of DR-site during normal

operations. There is the assumption that BASF gets the

flexibility to use the DR-site in case of disaster after

switchover of the productive landscape for the quality

insurance systems too, even though with limited

performance for the quality insurance systems, but this has

to be ensured under several aspects together with the

hardware supplier during deeper analysis or with a

prototype.
