I want to use this space to update one item and plug another. First, an update on where we are in the search process for a new Minister of Music and Worship for our church: About the time you called me as pastor, Music Minister Andrew Lewis announced his resignation due to his wifes employment move to Indiana. So, even before I arrived here, we began making plans to begin a search for Andrews replacement. At my request, an advisory committee was appointed to aid in this search process. The members of the Music Search Advisory Committee (MSAC) are Beth Ballhaussen, Alan Bennett, Carolyn Gray, Lisa Kakassy, Sara Moore, Jimmy Weathers, Jim Woolf, and me. So far, the committee has sharpened the job description (with the advice and consent of the personnel committee), advertised the position through several sources, and gathered and evaluated over forty résumés. We are meeting weekly and hope to begin interviewing soon. The MSAC requests your prayers. This is an enormous responsibility and the committee prays constantly for God to direct us to the right person to lead our music programs and create a worshipful atmosphere as we gather each Sunday. Please join us in this prayer. Now I will plug an upcoming event by asking, Who doesnt like bar-be-que and, at the same time, being out of debt?I dont know anyone who would vote against those things! We are making significant progress in our Greater Things debt-reduction campaign and should reach some exciting milestones soon. Before years end (maybe even before months end!), we should top the $1,000,000 mark in giving to Greater Things. This will reduce our indebtedness below $2,000,000. Can you imagine the Greater Things this church will be free to do for God without this debt?!?!? We want to celebrate how God has rallied us around this project and given us a vision for even Greater Things in the future with a church-wide bar-be-que dinner immediately following worship on October 16. Of course, the celebration wont be complete without your presence, so please mark your calendar and plan to be here for worship and lunch on October 16. Who thought of this title, Greater Things? I want to use this space to update one item and plug another. First, an update on where we are in the search process for a new Minister of Music and Worship for our church: About the time you called me as pastor, Music Minister Andrew Lewis announced his resignation due to his wife’s employment move to Indiana. So, even before I arrived here, we began making plans to begin a search for Andrew’s replacement. At my request, an advisory committee was appointed to aid in this search process. The members of the Music Search Advisory Committee (MSAC) are Beth Ballhaussen, Alan Bennett, Carolyn Gray, Lisa Kakassy,

Now I will plug an upcoming event by asking, “Who doesn’t like bar-be-que and, at the same time, being out of debt?” I don’t know anyone who would vote against those things! this church than he or she might have known at the time. It seems to me that God is doing Greater Things here week by week. New believers are being baptized, our members are learning and growing in Christ, missions and services to the community are expanding, worship is increasingly well-attended and exciting, and we are loving one another more graciously and deeply. And just imagine, still Greater Things are before us! I thank God that I am part of what He is doing here at First Baptist Church.

Dr. Phillip Reynolds, Senior Pastor

GILLESPIE REFUGE DINNER After being at FBC Hickory for seven summers, the Gillespie family has watched a lot of students come through the youth group. This year, watching 16 students graduate and go on to college left us so sad. Where has the time gone since Chris was kidnapping sleepy-eyed middle schoolers and doling out Refuge t-shirts? One night, over dinner, the Gillespies thought about how awesome it would be to have ALL of our current students and their families over for dinner so we could get to know them better. As a result, we want to open up our home to you this fall and have ALL of you over for a home-cooked meal on us and with us. Find a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday that fits your family’s schedule and give Chris a call to set it up. See you soon!

Children's Missions Day Camp Sponsored by CBFNC Saturday, November 5 Calvary Baptist, Asheville Sign up in the church office by October 7. Grades 1 thru 6, $15 per child. Transportation is provided.

FBC's Children's Ministry Conduct Guidelines The following conduct guidelines for children in grades 1 through 6 help us provide a great experience for all our children. Children are expected to: 1) Listen and obey (James 1:22)

Do not talk while your teacher is speaking. Do not talk while another child is speaking. Obey all instructions given by your teacher.

2) Be kind (Ephesians 4:32) Treat others with kindness in words and actions. Keep hands and feet to yourself. Participate with others. Respect others and church property.

Parents can remind their children of these expectations as our children's ministry teachers and leaders partner with parents in teaching, nurturing, and loving children.

Calendar of Upcoming Events October 7-8 Oktoberfest 21-22 RA Campout at Boone 30 Trunk or Treat, 5:00 - 7:30

YOU NEVER ‘AGE OUT’ OF PARENTING You can be a spiritual “parent" regardless of your age. "Most aspects of worship/faith are not taught -- they are experienced and modeled by people significant in the life of the child. Just because children may not be ‘sitting still and listening,’ we cannot assume that they are not paying attention. [...] Instead of being judgmental of parents who may have an unusually active child, caring adults in the congregation can offer to let the child sit with them occasionally... This may give the child much-needed spiritual aunts and grandfathers." - Janice Haywood, "Enduring Connections", p. 18 Question for thought: Would you be willing to be a "spiritual parent" to a child who sits near you in worship? Go for it! What do you have to lose?

REACHING OUT At Oktoberfest All of Hickory converges on downtown Hickory just a few steps from FBC's back door for Oktoberfest, and we'll be there! With your help, FBC's Children's Ministry will sponsor a booth at Oktoberfest on October 7 and 8. Our booth will feature Christ-centered crafts and activities for children and will provide us with an opportunity to reach out to neighbors and new friends just blocks from FBC. Please sign-up in Bible Study or contact the church office to volunteer for a two-hour block Friday evening or any time on Saturday.

SANCTUARY CHOIR The sanctuary choir "in-house fall choir retreat" is scheduled for Friday evening and Saturday morning, October 7-8. Those wishing to sing only the Christmas music need to come on Saturday morning from 8:30-11:30am .

VETERAN’S CELEBRATION On November 8, the Mature Adults will host a Veteran's Day Celebration during their regular 2nd Tuesday luncheon. Veterans are invited to come to be a part of this luncheon. We will share a meal together, hosted by the Mature Adults. Veterans will be given a chance to share some of their stories of their time in service. The cost of the meal is $5.00. Veteran's meals will be paid for by the Mature Adult Ministry.

Our goal this year is 40 trunks! Decorate your trunks, your kids, and yourselves (no scary or evil themes, please). Event includes inflatables, hot dog supper, photography booth, and the pumpkin story. It’s open to the whole community free of charge The success of this outreach to our community depends on you. Please volunteer to help, and please reserve a spot for your trunk by calling Shannon Rudisill in the church office or talk to Cindi Morrison or Rendell Hipps, or by looking for sign-up sheets during October. Can’t do a trunk? Candy donations are welcome.
