Good afternoon everyone and wel-come to today's Emirates FA CupFirst Round Qualifying tie be-

tween Wimborne Town and WitheridgeAFC from Devon. I'm fairly certain thisis Witheridge's first visit to Cuthbury;please make them feel welcome. Theyplay in the Premier Division of the SouthWest Peninsula League which is the sameas St Austell who ran us so close here lastseason. There's always something special aboutthe FA Cup and, while neither of today'steams will feature at Wembley in May,progress in the competition can be finan-cially rewarding with £3,000 going to thewinners of today's tie. This will be beWitheridge's third game in the competi-tion having already seen off two WesternLeague Premier Division sides in WeltonRovers (2-0 at home) & Street (2-1away). Should the game end in a drawafter 90 minutes, the replay will be atWitheridge's Edge Down Park on Tues-day with a 7.45 kick-off.Our three game winning run came to anend last Saturday at Evesham Unitedwhere we were on the wrong end of a 3-1scoreline. It was a bad day all round asthe team coach was held up on the waythere, and then the radiator developed aleak on the way home, necessitating sev-eral stops at petrol stations to fill up. Fullmarks to the hardy bunch of supporterswho made the trip; I know the players arevery aware of the support they get fromyou on these trips.

Last Sunday our Ladies team played theirfirst ever competitive game when theybeat Pen Mill Ladies 8-0 in the FirstRound Qualifying of the Women's FACup in front of a good crowd here atCuthbury. Congratulations to managerMark Joyce, coach Steve Davies and allthe ladies. They'll face SouthamptonWomen away from home in the nextround on Sunday September the 20th.On that same Sunday, Cuthbury will behosting a benefit match for our very pop-ular former player Steve Moore. Steve isbattling with a serious illness and it wouldbe great to see as many people there aspossible. There are more details of thisvery worthwhile game later in the pro-gramme.Finally, can I remind you again about theWimborne Town Golf Day at BulburyWoods GC on Thursday October 1st.Anyone wishing to take part, please seeDenis Cadd or talk to any director.

Enjoy this afternoon’s game.

From the Dugout

Welcome to today's FA Cupgame against Witheridge. Weextend a welcome to the visit-

ing management, players, directors andsupporters. The last home game with Bashley com-pleted a good Bank Holiday weekend fol-lowing the cup win at Cowes. The gametook on a similar pattern with the earlyscore from James Stokoe giving us theconfidence to control the game. Furthergoals came from Carl Preston, FranklynClarke and Mark Gamble with Jamescompleting his hat trick in the 6-1 win.James's 5 goals over the weekend were agreat reward for his performances and hiscombination with Mark up front is one wehope continues to bring goals and suc-cess.Last Saturday's away trip to Evesham wasdisappointing both in the performanceand the result (1-3). We were unable toplay anywhere near what we had pro-duced in the previous 3 games, and didn'tdeserve anything from the game. Wefound it hard to cope with the differentstyle offered by a good Evesham side anddespite taking the lead through MarkGamble's good finish we were unable toever be in control of the game.

I would like to offer my congratulationsto the Ladies team on their memorablefirst experience of the FA Cup last Sun-day, the 8-0 win over Pen Mill has set upan away tie against Southampton. For today's game we welcome back JonBlake to a fully fit squad, your support asever is much appreciated.

Enjoy the game

From the Dressing RoomHi, and welcome to this afternoon’s

FA Cup game. We all enjoy acup-tie, and after the excitement

of our run in the Trophy last season theboys are keen to get another cup run go-ing. And we know that winning thesegames brings funds to the Club.My last programme notes were writtenbefore the game at Cowes so I thought I’dstart off with my thoughts on that game.If you remember it was the Saturday of theBank Holiday weekend. There’d been anaccident on our road and we missed ourferry, so we reached the ground later thanexpected. This was a potential bananaskin, which is probably why Radio Solentwere at the ground. We played 4-4-2 sowere set-up to attack. We got an early goaland never looked back. I thought we gotstronger through the game, and totallydominated it. We went in at the break 2up, and anticipated that Cowes wouldcome out strongly, which they did. Harvsmade a great save, then we got the all im-portant third goal, which killed the gameoff. For once it was a fairly easy day forthe boys at the back. Two days later we were at home to Bash-ley on Bank Holiday Monday with a 1pmkick-off. I hope you realised it was an ear-ly start! I’ve been asked if I did anythingdifferent to a 3 o’clock start. No, not really- I had a good meal the evening before, and a light bite in the morning.Given Bashley’s start to the season, mostpeople expected us to win easily. Butthey’re a good young side who don’t givein, and we only managed a draw at homelast Christmas. As with Cowes, the earlygoal settled us. Stokes scored a well-de-served hat-trick, and has resumed a great

partnership up front with Gambo. Ithought the 2 wide boys, Carl and Sam didwell too. It was important for us to get 2league wins on the trot.A final word on this game goes to theBash fans behind our goal – terrific sup-porters.How did I cope with 2 games in 46 hours? Thanks for asking. Actually I played 3 lotsof 90 minutes in that time as I also playedin a charity game for Steve Moore on theSunday. And I felt pretty good - as you’dexpect from a finely-honed athlete! Then last Saturday we made the long jour-ney to Evesham. We were late gettingthere, and only had a 15-minute warm-up.We weathered their early storm, and went1 up after 15 minutes or so with a classicGambo break away, Billy giving yet an-other assist. They put us under a lot pres-sure, and eventually our resistance gaveway. We desperately wanted to get to half-time at 1-all, but we couldn’t hold on.They scored again in the last minute of thehalf. And to be honest it was going to behard for us to come back from that. Allcredit to Evesham, they’re a good side. Onthe day we were second best at everything– apart from Harvs who was immense, andsome last ditch defending. On the way home the coach (the bus, notSteve) kept overheating, and we had tostop lots of times to replenish the water. My book on “Service Stations betweenEvesham and Wimborne” comes out soon. The boys are keen to get back to winningways today. As always, your support ismost appreciated.Enjoy the game.Scott First Team captain

Wimborne Town 6 Bashley 1 - 31st August 2015 - Ken Fergus reports

The Magpies made it 11 goals in twodays by beating Bashley 6-1 at Cuthbury.James Stokoe bagged a hat-trick with theothers coming from Carl Preston, Frank-lyn Clarke & Mark Gamble.Just as on the previous Saturday atCowes, Wimborne struck early throughJames Stokoe. There were only 4 min-utes on the clock when the ball broke toJames in the box and his right foot shotfrom 12 yards gave the Bashley keeperno chance. On 12 minutes Sam Griffin might havedoubled the lead but his shot cleared thebar and then, on 21 minutes, a quickthrow put Mark Gamble in but his shotfrom a very narrow angle also went over.Wimborne were looking very dangerousat this point but, frustratingly, their finalball was letting them down.Carl Preston should have doubled thelead on 35 minutes when the ball broketo him after a tackle on Sam Griffin, buthis shot was pushed out for a corner. ButCarl wasn't to be denied and, just oneminute later, he scored a second for theMagpies. Ignoring the visitors' screamsfor offside, he planted a sweet shot be-yond the keeper and inside the left handpost. And it was 3-0 just three minutes laterwhen James Stokoe got his head to an-other of Billy Maybury's expert freekicks.3-0 at the break, then, and it didn't lookgood for Bashley in the second half. They'd been second best throughout andwere giving the Magpie forwards far tomuch room. And so it proved. Threegoals in eight minutes around the hourmark sealed the points for Wimborne.

First, on 56 minutes, Franklyn Clarkerifled home after he'd been found by agreat crossfield pass from Carl Preston. Then, two minutes later, James Stokoecompleted his hat-trick. Sam Griffin didwell to reach a pass down the right fromCarl Preston and when his first timecross was missed by the Bashley de-fence, there was James to sweep the ballhome. Finally, Mark Gamble roundedoff the Wimborne scoring on 64 minuteswhen he ran onto a ball from inside hisown half, took the ball round the keeperand slotted home.To their credit, Bashley then came moreinto the game and got a well-deservedconsolation goal on 84 minutes fromPrentice.Steve Cuss brought on Declan Randall,Bill Elliott & Jon Blake for Ian Oliver,Patrick Wilson & Franklyn Clarke in thesecond period. This was Declan's firstappearance in Magpie colours and heseemed to fit well into the defence. This, again, was a professional perform-ance by Wimborne against a very youngand inexperienced Bashley team, al-though Steve Cuss will be concerned atthe way we relaxed in the final 15 min-utes.Great credit to Bashley for keeping goingand to their loyal bunch of fans behindthe goal who added to the afternoon'sentertainment.Wimborne Town: Harvell, Arnold ,Oliver(Randall 60), Wilson (Elliott 64), May-bury, Johnson, Griffin, Clarke (Blake80), Stokoe, Gamble, Preston.

Evesham Utd 3 Wimborne Town 1 - Sept 5th 2015 - Ken Fergus reportsDespite talking an 18th minute leadthrough Mark Gamble, Wimborne wentdown to a 3-1 defeat at Evesham last Sat-urday - a defeat that could, in truth, havebeen heavier.Steve Cuss relied on the same team andthe same 4-4-2 formation that had broughtthe Magpies three wins in as many match-es but this was to be no six goal spree asagainst Bashley on the previous Monday. The warning signs were there for Wim-borne as early as the third minute whenEvesham's Marcus Jackson - a thorn in ourside all game - struck the bar with a swerv-ing shot.More Evesham pressure followed with Ja-son Harvell having to make three savesbefore a downwards header was blockedon the Magpie line on 15 minutes. Threeminutes later though, and against the runof play, Wimborne took the lead. A longball out of defence by Billy Mayburycaught the home defence out and MarkGamble ran through to lob Sawyer in thehome goal from 35 yards. 1-0 Wimborne. The home side looked rattled for a whileand, just one minute later, Wimbornecould have doubled their lead when goodinterplay between Gamble & Stokoe gaveJames a chance which was blocked.Evesham equalised on the half hour with agoal that could and should have beenavoided. Evesham won a corner on theright and, when the ball was returned tothe taker, he was allowed to make his wayup the bye-line courtesy of a Billy May-bury slip before cutting it back for NickStanley to beat Jason at his near post. Andit took a super save from Jason just threeminutes later to prevent the home side go-ing ahead. The ball looked like it was

heading for Jason's top right corner beforehe tipped it over for a corner.Wimborne were no doubt hoping to reachhalf-time with the scores level but thatwasn't to be. On 43 minutes poor defend-ing on the left allowed a cross and, whenthe ball came in, Sean Wood was given fartoo much space and he knocked the ballhigh to Jason's right and into the net.On 51 minutes Jason Harvell again cameto the Magpies rescue when he got downsmartly to his right to stop a goal boundeffort. Then Franklyn Clarke set SamGriffin free but the winger ballooned hiscross over the bar from a good position. The killer goal came just before the hour.A corner on the left was cleared but whenthe ball came back in Charles Washbourneshot past Jason.Wimborne immediately brought AdamCostello on in place of Ryan Johnson andwent with three at the back with BillyMaybury moving forward into midfield. On 64 minutes clever work by Mark Gam-ble saw the striker dispossess a defenderand make his way down the bye-line be-fore having a shot saved.Morgan Turner replaced Patrick Wilson on71 minutes and then Bill Elliott came onfor Billy Maybury six minutes later, butEvesham remained in control to the end.Jason Harvell was Wimborne's man of thematch without question. A disappointing& long day day for the players & support-ers wasn't helped when the coach brokedown on the way home!Wimborne Town: Harvell, Arnold, Oliver,Wilson (Turner 71), Maybury (Elliott 77),Johnson (Costello 60), Griffin, Clarke,Stokoe, Gamble, Preston. Daily Echo FA Cup reports

Preliminary Round Bideford 1 Wimborne Town 2 28th Aug 2010Veteran front-man Barnes struck in added-time to secure a 2-1 victory at Bideford. Mag-pies had trailed to a well-taken opener from Jamie Mudge who put the Robins in front atthe Sports Ground on 15 minutes. Lee Chudy, who earlier had seen a one-on-one effortsaved by the host’s keeper, levelled matters in the 67th minute before Barnes had the fi-nal say. Discussing the victory, Wimborne assistant boss Darren Powell said: "Everyteam wants a good run in the FA Cup, and we've started on that road."Wimborne: Hutchings, Wilson, Lockyer, Roast, Curtis, Lloyd (Haysom 90), Green,Stokoe, Barnes, Chudy (Davidson 80), McCormick. Unused subs: James, Whitcher, Yel-land, Walker-Harris

First Round Qualifying Frome Town 2 Wimborne Town 0 9th Sep 2014Magpies made most of the running against their higher-ranked opponents at BerkleyRoad but had their wings clipped when Tom Golledge and Matt Smith plundered lategoals to fire the hosts to a 2-0 success.Wimborne’s Tom Biles and Sam Griffin had efforts cleared off the line during a tightfirst half and the visitors upped the ante after the break, having a strong penalty shoutwaved away before striker Matt Kemble saw his shot acrobatically tipped on to the postby Darren Chitty. Frome finally came to the party late on when Ben Thomson hit thewoodwork and Golledge somehow lifted the rebound over the crossbar. But the reprievewas short-lived as Thomson’s centre found Golledge to net the decisive opener with 12minutes to play before Smith wrapped up the result as Wimborne pushed for a leveller.Manager Steve Cuss told the Daily Echo: “I thought the performance was excellent. Wecreated numerous chances but just couldn’t put one away and that was the only partmissing from a complete display. I was delighted with the players, not just with how theyplayed but the fact we more than matched a Premier Division side away from home."The biggest disappointment was having felt we had done enough to get a replay or toeven have won it.Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Maybury, Oliver, Costello, Brimson (Powell, 84), Griffin,Biles (Stokoe, 80), Webb, Gamble, Kemble. Unused subs: Phelps, Field (g/k).

Formed in 1920, Witheridge Football Club have come a long way since the days of theMarried team and Singles team. Up until the Second World War, Witheridge played theirfootball in the North Devon League. After the war Witheridge didn’t rejoin the NorthDevon League but joined the Tiverton and District league, playing clubs like Bamptonand Elmore. In 1971, Witheridge decided it was time to move on from the TivertonLeague and joined the Devon and Exeter League, starting in Intermediate Four. The1970s and 1980s at times were hard for Witheridge but the team kept plugging away andfor a small village club managed to keep themselves going. Witheridge did have goodtimes during this period but it wasn't until the 1990s that they started to make people inthe Devon and Exeter League look up and take notice that the little village club was be-ginning to make a big stir.In 1990 the side won the Express and Echo Shield and they soon started flying throughthe Devon and Exeter League. 1992 saw Witheridge promoted to Intermediate One thenrace through Senior Three, Two and One. Then in 1996 Witheridge won promotion tothe Devon and Exeter Premier League. In 1997 Andre Pike was appointed as first teammanager and from that point on the club went from strength to strength. The 1999/2000season saw Witheridge finish runners-up in the Devon and Exeter Premier League andalso win three cups, the Okehampton Cup, Devon Premier Cup and the East Devon Sen-ior Cup, all within two weeks of each other.During their spell in the Devon and Exeter premier division, Witheridge became one ofthe big teams, finishing as runners-up four times in their last 7 seasons in the league.2006 saw Withy finally promoted to the Devon County League and in their only seasonmanaged to finish 11th place, which saw Witheridge promoted into the newly formedSouth West Peninsula League Premier Division. In the inaugural season of the South West Peninsula League, Witheridge managed a midtable finish despite being bottom of the league on Christmas Day which included a 12-match unbeaten run which stretched from February to the end of the season. 2009 sawthe club take a massive step forward when leveling work was done to the pitch as well asthe installation of floodlights at Edge Down Park which allowed the club to enter The FAVase for the very first time.During the summer of 2012, the club’s changing rooms were completely renovated and abrand new 100-seat stand installed as well as a new pathway down to the stand.Witheridge Football Club entered the FA Cup for the first time in the clubs 94-year his-tory in August 2014 and won their inaugural match after beating Barnstaple Town 1-0 atMill Road.Chairman Andre Pike’s vision for the club does not waver and plans are already afoot forthe next stage in the evolution of Witheridge Football Club

Witheridge AFC 1 Cullompton Rangers 0 - FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round5th Sept 2015 - Attendance 77 Report from Witheridge’s website

Witheridge snatched a last gasp winner thanks to a red faced error by the Cully keeperwhich allowed Alex Gray to head the game’s only goal deep into injury time and sendWitheridge through to the 2nd Qualifying round of the FA Vase and sets up a home tieagainst SWPL Premier rivals St Blazey. The result was a little hard on the visitors who inall fairness enjoyed the lions share of possession without really troubling Joe Moore inthe Withy goal, and with the game seemingly heading for extra time a long throw intothe box bounced comedicaly over the visiting keeper and allowed Gray to head thegame’s only goal.

Witheridge is a village in North Devon. At the 2011 Census the population of the parishwas 1,158. Its name is derived from the Old English for "Weather Ridge", probably as aresult of its exposed location on the top of a hill, which means it and surrounding hamletssuch as Nomansland generally suffer from poor weather for much of the year.Situated almost equidistant from Dartmoor and Exmoor, the village has earned the nick-name the Gateway to the Two Moors Way. It is approximately 11 miles west of Tiverton.

Wimborne Town gave a brilliant display intheir first ever competitive match, scoringeight without reply in their SSE Women'sFA Cup First Round Qualifying matchagainst Penn Mill. The newly formed team, about to start theirDorset County Women's League cam-paign, raced into a five-goal lead inside thefirst half hour against their Somerset Coun-ty League opponents with some sparklingplay to delight most of the three figurecrowd at Cuthbury. The visitors regrouped well either side ofthe break and limited the damage but couldnot prevent a heavy defeat. Leigh Bartlettwith a personal tally of four goals but withteamwork, crisp passing and good move-ment marked a stunning first 90 minutes.Bartlett opened her account in the secondminute and Hollie Lemon powered a head-er just wide before Bartlett converted skip-per Kerry Shiers' through ball for thesecond. Penn Mill keeper Becca Robertsdenied Bartlett well before a Shiers runand cross forced an own goal for the homeside’s third on 19 minutes.Bartlett duly completed her hat-trick with alow effort on 24 minutes and Caitlin Steelescored with a fine shot from the edge ofthe area a minute later.Things threatened to get embarrassing forthe visitors but they lifted their game, get-ting in more tackles and challenges andtrying to show more attacking intent. AmyJones had their first effort on goal and theyforced a couple of corners. It was Bartlett who added the sixth on 58minutes, again sent clear of the defencebefore finishing well. Shiers put a chanceover the bar before home keeper Leonard

was forced into her first serious action, diving to tip a shot away for a corner on 69minutes.Wimborne seemed determined to keep aclean sheet with Leonard again in actionon 81 minute but two further goals later onmade the score rather more harsh on thevisitors who had battled well in the finalhour of the contest. First, Shiers scored thegoal her all action display deserved, a soloeffort on 86 minutes, then Lucy Cuff addedthe eighth after a corner was cleared to theedge of the box. There was still time forJess Marshallsay to fire inches wide butthe final whistle drew prolonged applausefrom the watching public for a spirited dis-play by all on a very warm afternoon. Many of the Wimborne Town players havebeen playing junior football together sincethe age of twelve and this was the next stepon a long term project for this ambitiousclub, whose next Cup test will be againstSouthampton Women of the Southern Re-gional League in two weeks, after a leaguedebut at Dorchester Town.

Wimborne Town hosted BCW at Bland-ford School on the 3G pitch in the openinggame of the season. The first quarter started at a high tempowith most of the play in the congested midfield. A good pass from Sam Hesleden letAidan Shepherd cross for Jake Carswellto head Wimborne’s opener. In the 2nd Quarter play opened up morewith both teams spreading the ball aroundand looking to attack down the wings.BCW’s Roberts showed promise goingforward only for a strong defence of OllieOsborne & Tom Betts stopping him fromscoring. As Wimborne’s attacks increasedAidan Shepherd netted to double the lead.BCW’s goalkeeper Ben Rolleston stoodout in this quarter with some outstandingsaves and commanded his area well.

Jake Carswell got on the end of JordanChafrey’s corner for 3-0. And not longafter Danny Tourh made a run down theright wing and sent a cross over to CharlieFerguson to increase the lead to 4.As anticipated, BCW came back in the 3rdquarter with Purnell & Hall going close. But it was a corner from Aidan Shepherdthat saw Wimborne’s Frank Herrington’sheader well saved by BCW’s keeper BenRolleston, only for Jake Carswell to be inthe right place to tap home to make thescore 5-0.In the 4th Quarter goals from DannyTourh & Aidan Shepherd completed thescoring. It was noted how well the BCW playersconducted themselves after this defeat.

Reflecting on last season:Which was our best result?Probably drawing 1-1 at Merthyr. Theydidn’t drop many points at home.Which was our best team performance?Yate away on a Tuesday night. Theyhadn’t lost at home, and we were missing alot of players. We defended well as a teamand caught them on the counter attack, winning 4-1.Which was the best game?Hornchurch at home in the Trophy. Itlooked like we were heading for a Tuesdaynight replay in Essex when it went 2-2.But 2 late goals sent us through. It meant alot to the players, Club, and fans.Which was our goal of the season?Gambo’s overhead at home to Swindon. We were 1-0 down and it got us back inthe game, which we went on to win 2-1.Congratulations on winning the “Chair-man’s Player of the Season” award. Whowould have the “Ian Oliver” award? There’s a few contenders, but for me Har-vs. He is without doubt the best keeper inthe league and could easily play higher. Hekept us in the game many times.

Thinking about this season:Have you set any targets?- personally - to defend as well as I can,and I wouldn’t mind getting more than 3goals this season;- the team - to try and push for the play-offs. Although we haven’t had the greateststart, with the Squad we have, I can’t seewhy we shouldn’t as we are capable ofbeating anyone in this league. How has the season started for you?It hasn’t been the best of starts. But I thinkthis is down to a lot of injuries and peoplenot available during pre-season. It has tak-

en a few games to find our feet and startplaying as a team. But we’ve had a fewwins now, so hopefully we’ve turned thecorner. As one of the senior players, do you feelmore responsibility now?I was never one for speaking that muchwhen I was younger, but as I’ve got olderI’ve become more vocal. So I guess I dofeel I have a bit more responsibility. What advice would you give to youngerplayers breaking into the Squad? We’ve got some brilliant young lads com-ing through. My advice would be to be pa-tient as they might not get the game timethey’d like straightaway. We’ve all beenthere. But when they do get their chance, make sure they take it and have no regrets.

Ian - thanks for your time. We’ve beenlooking forward to this interview.Steve Harris’s photo of Ian was taken atBurnham 3 weeks ago.

Short History of Wimborne Town F.C.Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of theDorset County FA in 1887.

In the 1930’s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, theDorset Junior Challenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup fourtimes.

Wimborne’s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior AmateurCup, a feat not repeated until 1964. In 1981, Wimborne won the DorsetLeague Division One championship without losing a match. The same year,Wimborne joined the Western League and finished third in Division One in1984/85.

Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glitteringchapter in the Club’s history. Over the following 22 years they won theWessex League three times (1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and the Magpiesalso lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first team toachieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in 1999/00 andalso won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97.

Wimborne Town also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In1982/83, they reached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. The dream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat.

And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, thus becoming the first everDorset club to play at Wembley. On a memorable day, under manager AlexPike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 win over holders Guiseley. Thatsame season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup andWessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph.

2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion tothe Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history. After a difficultfirst two seasons Wimborne have now become established in the leaguefinishing mid table and gaining more points each season.
