Brighton Speed Trials1963

The Brighton and Hove Motor Club welcomes both spectators andcompetitors to their annual National Speed Trials. This event was first held in1905 when the civic fathers of those days showing great foresight invested thesum of £4,000 to "Tarmac" Madeira Drive to form "The Brighton MotorTrack" which they claimed to be the "most magnificent in the world". Theevent lasted for four days with promenade coocerts and military bands in tbePavilion grounds each evening. Speeds are oot comparable with the presentas the start was situated at the Easternend of Madeira Drive. However, A. L.Guiness covered the standing start kilometre in 35.8 sec. in a 100 h.p. Darracqwhile Clifford Earp in a 90 h.p. Napier took 23.0 sec. to do a flying kilometre.Following the first and highly successful event the Speed Trials were not heldagain until 1923 after the Brighton and Hove Motor Club had been reformed. It was held again the following year and then allowed to lapse uotil 1932.Apart from the years 1939-45 it bas been staged annually since that date.During this period it attained grea popularity. Many famous racing driversboth pre-war and post-war have taken part in the event at one time or another

The Cars in each class are fairly evenly matched, and as the timetaken by the class winner decreases over the years, so it requires more andmore skill to put up a class winning performance.

It is certainly not just a case of sitting on the line waiting for the greenlight, putting your foot hard down on the accelerator and keeping it there untilyou cross the finish line.

Days of preparation have been put in by the driver or his mechanic inbringing the car to its peak performance and ensuring it is safe. Every car iscarefully scrutinised before being allowed to compete to be sure it complies withthe regulations as to safety and the extent of modifications.

Once on the line it is skill that counts. The driver must be anexpert at controlling bis car - the exact number of R.P.M. to transmit maximumpower for acceleration to the road without promoting wheel spin - hairs-breadthclutch control - smooth, fast gear cbanges at precisely the right moment, andan acute sense of 'driving by the seat of bis pants' to control immediately anyincipient skid promoted by tiny variations in the road surface. Preciousseconds are gained or lost depending upon his reaction time to the foregoing, for awards are won or lost by ooe hundredths of a second.

As you can see, the drivers you are watching today are highly skilledin the art through constant practice and it stands to reason much safer whendriving under every day road conditions. In recent years the Police and otherauthorities have accepted this fact to extent of promoting their own motoringclubs to further the art of car control.

Admittedly, this is our sport, but we firmly believe that properlycontrolled motoring events such as todays' further the art of driving.

Brighton Speed Trials .. 1963(continued from Page 13)

The highlight of this year's event will be the demonstration run over aquarter of a mile by our two Dragsrers, The American Dragster,"MOONEYES" bas been specially flown over to this country, to take onSidney Allard's Dragster in a short series of events, during the fortnight thatit is in this country. The car has been constructed by Dean Moon, and isdriven by Dante Duce. At the moment of writing, very little is known aboutthe car, as it only arrived in this country on the 8th September. Thisafternoon's event is the second leg of the ALLARD/MOONEYES "dua!."The first having taken place at Silverstone on Tuesday, lOth September. Here for the first time in motoring history, at Brighton, a genuine Americanbuilt Dragster is appearing. This is the third year that Sidney Allard'sDragster bas appeared, but for the first time he has only to cover a quarter ofa mile, which is the recognised distance for tbis type of event.

Tbese Dragsters are not eligible for any award at the event.

This year's entry, althougb not quite a record, is well up to previousyears in numbers. The car course record holder, Chris Summers, is notdefending his title, but in class 16 the Cooper Buicks, of either GeorgeKeyloch or Michael Eyres could well lower the record. Michael Eyresis at present leading in the Autosport National Sprint Championship, andcan be relied on to put on an outstanding performance. Another contenderfor F.T.D. is Ken Wilson in a 2t litre B.R.M. He has newly acquired thismachine, and this will be it's second outing. He is quite used to handlingfast cars, having gained experience in a Lister Jaguar. We must not forgetPatsy Burt in her Cooper Climax. She has certainly proved in past events, tbat this is not entirely a man's sport.

One of the most interesting entries, and a dark horse for F.T.D. isTony Densham's Worden Dragster in Class 15. This machine built onAmerican Dragster principles is powered by a supercharged 1948 Ford engine.

George 'Burton, apart from driving his very rapid Bentley, also lakes thewheel of Arnold Foster's 1922 Delage. This car which has been racingregularly over the past two years at vintage events, is always in immaculatecondition.

In the sports car classes, the entries are an all time record. J. Randles'record last year, may well be captured by any of the entrants in Class 11.John Playford who holds the record in Class 7, is driving Peter Sargent's ListerJaguar. This car ran at Le Mans this year. Eric Brockhoven who comes fromSouth Africa, is driving his Corvette engined Lorette. It has been racing fornearly two years, and has yet to be beaten in it's class. He tells us he hasbeen using it every day as normal transport in London while over here.Another entrant from Africa is David Beckett. As co-driver to John Marussishe was outright winner in the East African Safari in 1961. Today he is at thewheel of a Lister Jaguar. Although not likely to win one of the main awards, the Minis in class 2 and 4 are well worth watching. It is surprising howquickly they can be made to go.

The outright course record holder George Brown, again figures in theentry list, driving his supercharged Vincent. Those who saw him take offlast year, must doubt his ability to go much faster, and he himself says that hismachine is too fast for it's owner. But we are sure that given the rightconditions he will once again lower the record.
