NEW BOARD APPOINTMENTSFalls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board

Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board has been advised by the Minister for Energy, Environment

and Climate Change, the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP of appointments to the Board for the period March 30th, 2018 to March 29th, 2021.

The Victorian alpine resorts’ economic contribution, environmental stewardship and provision of recreational and social benefits plays a vital role in state tourism and in their support for the local, regional and state economies.

Falls Creek, as the largest Victorian alpine resort and Bronze Award winner of the RACV Major Tourism Awards 2018, is pleased to make the following announcement regards its new Board members.

The Minister has appointed the following members to the Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board:

2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

2 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Round One - Falls Creek

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention

in the article with Ben McIlroy.Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday.During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt.com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!The weekend’s program sort of goes like this. Saturday: 9am to 16:00 is compulsory practice. 10am to 18:30 is rider registration and Info Tent open. 17:00 to 17:30 is rider briefing. From 18:00 on there is a social evening at Last Hoot Restaurant and Bar in Slalom Plaza.Sunday: 8am to 9am Rider Briefing and Timing activation. 8:30am to 1430pm Trails Open for GE competition.1500 to 1630 Presentations. If you’re into biking and would like to enjoy some good action, be at Falls Creek this weekend. Further detail from 03 5758 1200. •

• Jo Shannon (Chair). • Lindy Allen (Deputy Chair). • Jason Alexandra. • Michelle Croughan. • Susan Lebish. • Helen Moran. • Peter Valerio.

The Falls Creek Board is fortunate to retain the services of its outgoing Chair, Susan Lebish. Additionally, both Lindy Allen and Jason Alexandra continue their service.

The Minister has confirmed that Susan will join Michelle Croughan, Helen Moran and Peter Valerio as common members on the Boards of Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Mount Buller and Mount Stirling. This is to assist with improving collaboration across the resorts.

In a statement, incoming Chair Jo Shannon said “It is a privilege to be appointed as the Chair of the Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board. I am committed to taking an open and collaborative approach to deliver sustainable outcomes for all stakeholders. I look forward to working

with the Board and the Falls Creek community.”

The Board looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the alpine resort sector, particularly in the areas of improved efficiency and transparency. Furthermore, it will work with the Alpine Resorts Co-Ordinating Council (ARCC) on its review of resort services, cost and efficiencies.

Whilst already a leader in its adoption of climate change initiatives, Falls Creek has pledged to improve its environmental sustainability along with progressing its targets for improved resource use, and working towards complying with obligations under the Climate Change Act 2017.

As Falls Creek heads into its 7th Decade as an alpine resort, the Minister’s appointments to the Board will provide the strategic and governance framework aligned with meeting the resort’s obligations to its community, guests, resort users and stakeholders and thereby its relevance well in to the foreseeable future.

On behalf of the community, this newspaper welcomes all board members to the resort and we all look forward to continuing to exceed visitor expectations, both summer and winter. Ed. •

WONDERLAND EMPORIUMA Pleasant Surprise

Opening a new business of any description requires plenty of planning, a fair degree of skill and

an earnest desire to care for customers. Opening a brand new business from scratch requires all of the above – and more.

The good news is that it is open and operating successfully- located in the service lane on the Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga South in the cute little shopping complex that is Nourish Whole Foods and Flour + Water Restaurant.

The new business is beautifully named ‘Wonderland Emporium’ and that probably best describes what the business is.

It is not a coffee shop – and yet it provides a comprehensive range of coffees and a menu full of Black Teas (like Golden Monkey), Herbal Teas (like Chamomile Blossoms), Oolong Teas (like Taiwan Ginseng Oolong), Green Teas (like Honey Dew Green), White Teas (Lemon Cooler) and Chai Teas (Masala Chai). Also on offer are Iced Teas (Merry Mint).

Add to these in the drinks department we can have ‘Smoothie of the Day,” Beechworth Apple Juice or San Pellegrino Mineral Water.

It is not a restaurant – and yet the menu is so very interesting. Whilst limited, it changes regularly and should be sampled to develop your appreciation.

Small Bites can consist of House Cured Olives with sourdough, or House made Labne with crackers

on Thursdays and Ramen on Fridays. The Japanese style Pork Belly Ramen last week was excellent.

The Peace Plate is also seasonal and can offer tasty delights as simple as Chicken and Leek Pie with salad.

The Produce Platter can be for one or two people and comprises fine cheeses, house-made dips and is described as enticing antipasto style eating. A Vegan Produce Platter is available on request.

And, to finish off, there is a display cabinet choc-a-block full of cakes, desserts and even some vegan treats. Scones, jam and cream also make the mouth water

It is not a gift shop - and yet there is a range of gift-packed Honey Bird coffee – and it is not a florist – yet there is a range of flowers available and flowers can be ordered as wreaths, bouquets and for weddings. It is not an art gallery – and yet the walls are adorned with a delightful showing of local art – at the moment by Margaret Jordon.

This presentation of local art will change on a regular basis.

Wonderland Emporium is just that – a surprising package that has a something for everyone. From dining inside to seating on the verandah and taking in the views. One pleasant surprise are the clean hand-towels in the facilities. No paper here – just clean, folded hand towels for your comfort.

Wonderland Emporium is the brain-child of Jodi Mann with the support of husband Scott. Jodi is supported by her mum Gail who visits regularly and controls the books. Helping in the kitchen is Shanaya New and out the front is Megan New with a steadily growing team.

Wonderland Emporium is currently trading Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

If you would like to know more, or make a booking, give Jodi a call on 0409 235 550. •

LOCAL TALENT

4 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has

progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.MR: Is this your first overseas race?Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.MR: How did you get into riding?Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.MR: How many national events have you raced?Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

of the races he was doing.MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

President Stephen has chosen a ‘Bisque Par’ format for the day. In this format the player can stipulate how many of his ‘handicap’ stroke he wishes to allocated to a particular hole e.g. the player may wish to take 2 of their strokes on the 11th hole instead of their ‘usual’ one which their handicap allows them. However, the player MUST be mindful that once they have used all their handicap strokes they must play any remaining holes off scratch, i.e without the benefit of any usual strokes they may receive on the hole. Sounds complicated but will not be once we get under way. This format will prove to be very interesting and adds another layer of decision making and strategy to the game.

The last couple of months has been exciting at the Club as we have had 2 Holes-in-One, on the same hole, the 17th. First up on Boxing Day last year was Roger Church and lately, on the 17th March, was Dave Browning. Congratulations to both of them and thanks to Tate’s Funeral Service for their sponsorship of this phenomena by the way of a $200 cheque to the recipient.

One Annual event that, in the past, has not captured the imagination of the Men as much as this year, was the Red Tees Championships in early February. The difference this year was that all who dressed

as a Lady (and I use that term loosely!) were given a 2 stroke advantage to their handicap. The boys took to the Op Shops around town, and their wives wardrobes, to attire themselves befitting the day. Suffice to say that all had lots of laughs, some had lots of hits, with eventual winner Dave Browning doing so without the handicap benefit in a tense 3 hole play-off with Roger Church - watched raucously, as would be expected, from the balcony by all the ‘girls!’

As you can see, we do have a bit of fun up at the Golf Club. It is not all serious comps and rivalry. Everyone and anyone is more than welcome to approach any member of the club to learn more about how to join us on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday for golf and social contact, or call into the Tawonga South Newsagency and speak to President Stephen about it all. See you at Mount Beauty Golf Club soon. •

1979, and features a variety of home grown fresh produce, new and used goods and household items, craft stalls, sausage sizzle and much more. The market takes place this Saturday 7th April, and runs from 9am to about 2pm. Phone 03 5754 4097 for enquiries or to book a stall. •

All My LoveBy Anne Brooksbank will be presented at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, Kiewa Crescent, this Saturday 7th April.

Henry Lawson and Mary Gilmore are two of Australia’s best-known faces, with their literary works seeing them both ‘on the money’…no really, they have both appeared on the currency!

While their separate careers made them celebrities, what Australia never knew was about their secret love and the shocking betrayal they faced. All My Love is their story which incorporates their own words, taken from the letters they sent each other. “An outstanding theatrical experience of the type of greatness that sneaks up on you…” Blue Curtains. Starring Dion Mills (Lawson) Kim Denman (Gilmore); Directed by Denny Lawrence.

There will be two performances – the first at 2pm and then again at 7.30pm. Tickets are $40, concession $35, student/child $15 and are available at the Mount Beauty Newsagency: Ph: 03 5754 4204, or at the door. •

The first eight people to register for each event will get free access to a three hour ‘photography’ masterclass, where you’ll receive a comprehensive run-down on how to get the best from your phone in any lighting, how to make the most of any background, and the top five free apps to edit your photos with.

Workshops are open to shire residents aged 12-24; for more information or to register, please contact Jenny Corser on 0419 915 319 or email: [email protected].

van der Ploeg (2013 XCE World Champion and also raised in Mount Beauty) who’s been at University for like forever but at the same time he’s been a professional mountain biker. So it’s possible.I like Physics so maybe something to do with engineering. I’d love to get involved with building new parts for bikes, making them faster and better. Developing ideas like Shimano’s new electronic gearing, which I’ve just got on my new bike.MR: It’s pretty obvious you like to keep involved with the mountain bike world. Do you feel any pressure from a biking perspective during your final year at school?Ben: There’s so many people helping me and pushing me into the pro mountain bike scene and it’s so easy to get sucked into it and think it’s going to continue to be easy for the rest of my life. I step back and think that it’ll be hard work, but with the right support I could do it. I think it’s important to still have to the love for mountain biking.MR: Do you think your love for the sport will change if you become a full on racer?Ben: Not really, As much as I enjoy the whole vibe of riding with my mates, hanging out and having a good time. I still really really enjoy the racing aspect of mountain biking, it determines who is the best and everyone wants to be the best at what they do.Racing has brought mountain biking to where it is today, bikes are lighter and faster and better than ever and racing has played a massive role in that.MR: Do you have any expectations racing your first EWS in New Zealand?

Ben: I have no idea. I don’t know if I’m going to come last or first or not finish. I hope there’s lots of riders, because in the Australian races there’s only like 20 athletes, but it’s the other side of the world for all the Europeans, so I don’t know if the junior riders will travel that far, but I’ll just wait and see.MR: Well have an awesome time; I’m sure it’ll be fun no matter what the result. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?Ben: Mum and Dad, Chris, Sam and everyone from Shimano. Results:In the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, Ben achieved a creditable 12th place out of

about 50 entrants in the U21’s after a bit of a rough day. After the trip to New Zealand, Ben then went on to compete at EWS Round Two at Derby, in North Eastern Tasmania. But this time, among the U21 competitors, it all came together for Ben and he finished on top of the podium - and is currently leading the U21 class after the first two rounds. With the next six rounds taking place all round the world, Ben is about to focus on year 12 and the Australian National Enduro Series. • Matt Rousu

FALL LINESEngland’s Elite Train at Falls

Decorated middle distance runners Charlie Grice (ENG) & Kyle Langford (ENG) have headed

to the Victorian Alps at Falls Creek in preparation for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The training group chose a three week camp at Falls Creek as their preferred training arena for the added benefits of altitude (sighted by several elite running teams prior) along with solitude in the mountain village allowing concentrated training blocks with a minimum of distractions. Both athletes have set their sights on medals for the Gold Coast Games in April in the 800m & 1500m distances. The pair have also made a few side trips to the athletics track in Albury in the three week training camp. Both athletes will compete in preliminary races in Brisbane before the much awaited Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in early April.

An interesting aside for the Games is that, teams from the UK will be representing their own country, England, Scotland or Wales, whereas for the Olympics, they would all compete under the UK banner.

Our favourite media man, Chris Hocking was able to supply the images and get video coverage on two local stations, 9 Regional & Prime news. We think that WIN ran it on Monday. •

Photography WorkshopsThere is nothing more satisfying than taking complete control of your camera, finding its potential and understanding how to make full use of it. To achieve this, learning how to get off your Auto modes is a huge step in the right direction.

Join me on one of my photography workshops to really get an understanding of your camera and the potential you hold in your hands. During the weekend I will show you and help you to understand shutter speeds, aperture, shooting in manual mode, The affect different lenses have on your photos, fill flash, composition, how to correctly expose your photos as well as some of the editing and workflow techniques that I use.

The final workshop for summer is on the weekend of April 14th &15th. Costs are

$350 per person including two lunches and dinner.

Contact Charlie at [email protected] to book or check: www.mountainside.net.au. •

Local ArtistAlison Percy is a local visual artist and claims Falls Creek as the family’s second home year round. Her family are members of the Albury Ski Club where they ski in winter and in other seasons she and her husband go for drives to find a place for him to go fishing and for Alison to set up for painting.

Alison will be having her first Melbourne Solo Exhibition in May at Fortyfivedownstairs Gallery at number 45 Flinders Lane. Opening night is Tue 22nd May at 5:30pm and the exhibition runs from the 22nd to Saturday 2nd June.

Alison is pretty well known in our local Albury area for her artwork but not in Melbourne, so she is keen to get her name out there - letting people know about the two week exhibition – plus the fun opening night!

Alison’s works are inspired by the family’s many trips through North East Victoria, the Kiewa Valley, Falls Creek and Bogong High Plains. The exhibition will comprise 13 acrylic paintings framed in Australian mountain ash ranging in size from 1524 x 2034mm to 760 x 1014mm and 15 gouache plein air works are framed in Tasmanian oak that are 508 x 610mm and 356 x 457mm.

Alison spent time on the high plains over Easter painting plein air for the exhibition – with the last two works produced while on the mountain over at Rocky Valley Lake. •

A Good Friday AppealAnother year - another amazing total for our local community. This year we collected $11,300 towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

It was amazing to see many smiling faces on Friday morning turn up at the CFA Shed in Lakeside Avenue to volunteer to collect. From the local Scout and Cubs to family and friends all turned up to help

out. Without the support of these people and our local CFC from Mount Beauty and Tawonga this collection could not happen and we thank you so very much. Thanks also to Susan Ikin who donated a major raffle prize - which, is worth mentioning, all prizes were won by locals.

Then, the biggest task is the counting of

Rocky Valley Lake Two by Alison Percy (gouache, plein air painting 508 x 610mm)

all that money so a huge thanks go to the local Commonwealth Bank team of Meryn Deans and her staff. Meryn has been assisting with the collection for many years, overseeing the counting to ensure the tally is correct and the girls at the branch who confirm the numbers. The organisers of the local collections appreciate the time it takes to do this.

EMERGENCY

8 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

WEST KIEWA OPEN SPACEYou Can Help

Ever since the UKVCA was formed, the cleaning up of the area opposite the Information Centre, under the large

power lines, has been on the project list. Many of our members remember this as a great family play area when the SEC were in control of the entire area, and would like to see it become that again. It has taken considerable time to identify which groups are responsible for the area and its care, but this has finally been resolved and we have had considerable support from AusNet services, who are responsible for the area under and surrounding the powerlines. At this time just a year ago, DELWP and NECMA became involved in the scheme and a considerable amount of time, effort and money went into clearing the river banks of invasive plant species, followed by work and plantings by the Green Army and Secondary College students.

Five community organisations signed onto the planned Committee of Management for the project for further cleaning up of the river frontage of the West Kiewa River upstream from the Kiewa Valley Highway bridge. Since then there have been many meetings with DELWP and NECMA into the mechanisms for progressing this project. Unfortunately, we are at a stalemate and are currently applying for a Conservation Licence to work on the river banks. However, we do need to see the project progress and to this end the UKV Lions Club, one of the signatories to the project, have agreed to sponsor a community working bee to clean up the grassed areas. This working bee is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd., 10am to 1pm to be followed by a BBQ lunch provided by the Lions Club.We would be highly delighted if you could help on this day.Our main tasks at this time are to clean up the open space along the roadside and

under the powerlines so that the mowing contractor has a clear run through and under the trees, and hopefully to remove some of the additional obstructions such as piles of cut tree residue.Participants would need to dress appropriately, especially with good protective footwear, and bring gloves and any gardening tools which would be suitable - loppers, secateurs, small chain saw, whipper snipper, brush cutter, trailer etc. and a water bottle. Parking will be in the carpark opposite the Information Centre and down the road signed ‘to the Gorge Walk’.On arrival, each person will need to register at the Lions Club table so that they are covered by their volunteer insurance. They will be assigned a specific area in which to work depending on the tools they have available and will work only with their own tools. If there are any further inquiries please direct them to Mary or Keith Pike, 5754 1668. •

ENQUIRIES

To the many people who donated this year – a big thank you! This money will go to help so many children in so many ways. Although not a record for our area it’s still shows we are strong supporters of this great hospital. To all who helped along the way thank you and we look forward to see you all again next year. •

Emergency ReliefIt is a sad but true situation that we realise there are people in this community that, for a myriad of reasons, need emergency relief. To meet this need the local team at the Anglicare Mount Beauty Welfare Committee do a fantastic job. Last February the group moved in the The Manse, the home beside the Uniting Church in Kiewa Crescent where the extra space has enabled the provision of a better improved service.

Prior to Christmas, our local Commonwealth Bank Team donated $500 worth of long life products and groceries to our local Anglicare.

Now the Mount Beauty Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank is on board by

installing a permanent grocery shelf where clients and members of the public can drop off items to be donated.

This helped considerably at Christmas, and is an excellent way of filling gaps in the Anglicare stores. At the moment the committee are asking for donations of shampoo, soap and deodorant to meet their clients’ needs.

This ‘Collection Shelf ’ really is a fantastic system as it not only helps promote the service but demonstrates the huge commitment our Mount Beauty Community Bank team and our community have to ensuring that anyone who is going through a rough patch should not have to go without food or essentials. If you would like to know more, or to assist our local Anglicare, please give our Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, David Mundy a call on Mb: 0419 599 606. •
