Saturday 1st November 2014Queens’ College Chapel, Cambridge
In aid of the Poppy Appeal
and Queens’ music
28th March 2015
St Vedast-Alias-Foster
The Godwine Choir was set up in early 2014 by recent graduates who wanted to
capture the atmosphere of chamber music at university and bring it to London as
part of professional life.
The choir is now made up of twenty-five young singers, who rehearse together at St.
George the Martyr in Borough. We particularly specialise in a cappella music from the
20th and 21st century, including works by a number of contemporary composers such
as Gabriel Jackson and Roderick Williams. Last year, the group was featured in the
Financial Times and recorded a charity video for War Child.
Our plans this season include performances in Buckfast Abbey and St. Catharine's
College, Cambridge. Tonight, we are very pleased to welcome you to St. Vedast-alias-
Foster for a reflective concert of Passiontide music.

Drop, Drop, Slow Tears
Orlando Gibbons
Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet,
which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace.
Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat;
to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease.
In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears;
nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears.
Tristis est Anima Mea
Francis Poulenc
Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem:
sustinete hic et vigilate mecum.
Nunc videbitis turbam quæ
circumdabit me.
Vos fugam capietis, et ego vadam
immolari pro vobis.
Ecce appropinquat hora, et Filius hominis
tradetur in manus peccatorum.
Miserere
Gregorio Allegri
Miserere mei, Deus,
secundum magnam misericordiam tuam;
et secundum multitudinem miserationum
tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam.
Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea:
et a peccato meo munda me.
Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego cognosco,
et peccatum meum contra me est semper.
Tibi soli peccavi, et malum coram te feci;
ut justificeris in sermonibus tuis,
et vincas cum judicaris.
Sorrowful is my soul even unto death.
Stay here, and watch with me.
Now you shall see the mob that will
surround me.
You shall take flight, and I shall go to be
sacrificed for you.
The time draws near, and the Son of Man
shall be delivered into the hands of sinners.
Have mercy upon me, O God,
according to thy loving kindness:
according unto the multitude of thy tender
mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions:
and my sin is ever before me.
Against thee only have I sinned, and done
this evil in thy sight: that thou might be
justified when thou speakest,
and clear when thou judgest.
Ecce enim in iniquitatibus conceptus sum:
et in peccatis concepit me mater mea.
Ecce enim veritatem dilexisti; incerta et
occulta sapientiae tuae manifestasti mihi.
Asperges me hyssopo, et mundabor;
lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam:
et exsultabunt ossa humiliata.
Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis,
et omnes iniquitates meas dele.
Cor mundum crea in me, Deus, et
spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis.
Ne projicias me a facie tua,
et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me.
Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui,
et spiritu principali confirma me.
Docebo iniquos vias tuas,
et impii ad te convertentur.
Libera me de sanguinibus, Deus,
Deus salutis meae, et exsultabit
lingua mea justitiam tuam.
Domine, labia mea aperies,
et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam.
Quoniam si voluisses sacrificium, dedissem
utique; holocaustis non delectaberis.
Sacrificium Deo spiritus contribulatus;
cor contritum et humiliatum,
Deus, non despicies.
Benigne fac, Domine,in bona voluntate
tua Sion, ut aedificentur muri Jerusalem.
Tunc acceptabis sacrificium justitiae,
oblationes et holocausta;
tunc imponent super altare tuum vitulos.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity;
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou requirest inward trusth: and shalt
make me to understand wisdom secretly.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the
bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins,
and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence;
and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways;
and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
thou God of my salvation: and my tongue
shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips;
and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I
give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:
a broken and a contrite heart,
O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build
thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices
of righteousness, with burnt offering :
then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
Salvator Mundi
Herbert Howells
O Saviour of the world,
who by thy cross and thy precious blood
hast redeemed us;
save us and help us,
we humbly beseech thee, O Lord.
Lamentations for Holy Saturday
Orlandus Lassus
ALEPH. Quomodo obscuratum est aurum,
mutatus est color optimus! dispersi sunt
lapides sanctuarii in capite omnium
platearum!
BETH. Filii Sion inclyti, et amicti auro primo:
quomodo reputati sunt in vasa testea,
opus manuum figuli!
GHIMEL. Sed et lamiæ nudaverunt mammam,
lactaverunt catulos suos: filia populi mei
crudelis quasi struthio in deserto.
Ierusalem, convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum
Christus Factus est
Anton Bruckner
Christus factus est pro nobis obediens
usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.
Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum
et dedit illi nomen,
quod est super omne nomen.
ALEPH. How the gold has grown dim, how the
pure gold is changed! The holy stones lie
scattered at the head of every street.
BETH. The precious sons of Zion, worth their
weight in fine gold, how they are reckoned as
earthen pots, the work of a potter's hands!
GHIMEL. Even the jackals give the breast and
suckle their young, but the daughter of my
people has become cruel, like the ostriches in
the wilderness.
Jerusalem, return to the Lord thy God
Christ became obedient for us unto death,
even death on the cross.
Therefore God exalted Him
and gave Him a name
which is above all names.
O Vos Omnes
Alberto Ginastera
O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam,
attendite, et videte
si est dolor sicut dolor meus,
quoniam vindemiavit me,
ut locutus est Dominus in die irae furoris sui.
Vide Domine quoniam tribulor,
conturbatus est venter meus,
Vide Domine: subversum est cor meum in
memetipsa, quoniam amaritudine plena sum:
Vide Domine: foris interficit gladius,
et domi mors similis est.
Idcirco ego plorans,
et oculus meus deducens aquas:
quia longe factus est, a me consolator,
convertens animam meam:
facti sunt filii mei, perditi,
quoniam invaluit inimicus.
Persequeris in furore,
et conteres eos sub coelis Domine.
O Vos Omnes
Carlo Gesualdo
O vos omnes qui transitis per viam
attendite et videte
si est dolor sicut dolor meus.
Attendite et videte
si est dolor sicut dolor meus.
Oh all you who pass this way,
Behold and see
if there be any sorrow like mine.
For the Lord has afflicted me
as he said in the day of his anger.
See Lord, I am troubled,
my bowels are disrupted.
See Lord, my heart is turned within me,
for I am full of bitterness.
See Lord, abroad the sword destroys
And at home it is death.
For that reason I lament
and my eye pours down water.
For the consoler is taken from me
and my mind whirls around.
My sons are ruined
and the enemy grows strong!
You persist in fury and you grind down
those under the heavens, Lord!
Oh all you who pass this way,
Behold and see if there be any sorrow like
mine.
Behold and see if there be any sorrow like
mine.

The Lord is Good
Cecilia McDowall
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him,
to the soul that seeketh him.
It is good that a man should both hope and
quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke
of his youth.
For the Lord will not cast off for ever:
But though he cause grief, yet will he have
compassion according to the multitude of
his mercies.
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve
the children of men.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, convertere
ad Dominum Deum tuum.
Salvator Mundi
Thomas Tallis
Salvator mundi, salva nos,
qui per crucem et sanguinem
redemisti nos;
auxiliare nobis
te deprecamur, Deus noster.
Christ became obedient for us unto death,
Even death on the cross.
Therefore God exalted Him

The Reproaches
John Sanders
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I led you out of Egypt, from slavery to freedom, but you led your Saviour to the cross.
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
Holy is God! Holy and strong! Holy immortal One, have mercy on us.
For forty years I led you safely through the desert. I fed you with manna from heaven,
and brought you to a land of plenty; but you led your Saviour to the cross.
Holy is God! Holy and strong! Holy immortal One, have mercy on us.
What more could I have done for you? I planted you as my fairest vine, but you yielded
only bitterness: when I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink, and you pierced your
Saviour’s side with a lance.
Holy is God! Holy and strong! Holy immortal One, have mercy on us.
I opened the sea before you, but you opened my side with a spear.
I led you on your way in a pillar of cloud, but you led me to Pilate’s court.
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I bore you up with manna in the desert, but you struck me down and scourged me.
I gave you saving water from the rock, but you gave me gall and vinegar to drink.
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I gave you a royal sceptre, but you gave me a crown of thorns.
I raised you to the height of majesty, but you have raised me high on a cross.
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
