SOLVING OBESITY: THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF MILLENNIAL DOCTORS

9 . 5 0 A M - 1 0 . 3 0 A M

Presenter: Dr Alessandro Demaio, Medical Officer, World Health Organisation

Chair: Dr Katherine Gridley, Advanced Emergency Trainee, Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital; Deputy Chair, AMA Queensland Council of Doctors in Training; and Board Member, Queensland Doctor’s Health Programme

Fighting obesity and diabetes is not usually a specialty area that attracts junior doctors. But Australian-born doctor and global health expert Alessandro Demaio – who is only 30 himself – has proven this isn’t always the case. Dr Demaio co-founded NCDFREE, a global social movement against non-communicable diseases (NCD) using social media, short film, and leadership events – crowdfunded, it reached more than 2.5 million people in its first 18 months. Sandro then founded festival21, assembling and leading a team in staging a massive celebration of community, healthy food, and culture in his hometown of Melbourne.

Dr Demaio will talk about the important role for young doctors to be involved in this cause and the work he has done to bring the issue of obesity and non-communicable diseases to the forefront.

Despite the technological advancements in medical imaging, the chest x-ray remains the most frequently requested radiological investigation, and one of, if not the most, difficult to interpret correctly. Often the chest x-ray will be used in conjunction with other examinations, especially in emergency cases. This session will provide doctors in training with the knowledge to review radiographic techniques and recognise normal variants and radiographic patterns of trauma and injury commonly encountered for airways, lungs, and pleura.

CLINICAL FOCUS: EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IN MEDICINE

Presenter: Dr Michael Wagels, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Princess Alexandra Hospital

3D printing has captured our imagination. From guns to houses, it seems that anything is possible, but using manufactured materials in clinical surgery presents a set of challenges that differs from those in the worlds of engineering, mechanics and art. It is important that prostheses not only look like the real thing but also that they function the same way and that they last. History has shown that enthusiasm for new technology in medicine is quickly tempered by the tenet that all implants fail eventually. So how can we observe the lessons of the past as we incorporate this new technology in medicine? To find out join this session that looks to the future.

Presenter: Prof Stephen O’Leary, Department of Surgery (Otolaryngology), Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne

Chair: Dr Matt Cheng, Junior Doctor Research Fellow, Princess Alexandra Hospital; Doctors in Training Representative, AMA Queensland Council; and Immediate Past Chair, AMA Queensland Council of Doctors in Training

Virtual reality (VR) surgery is how the surgeons of tomorrow will be taught. VR surgery involves immersion into a 3D world where the “patient” can be touched and operated on. The team from the University of Melbourne has developed a VR surgical environment for ear surgery that received the University’s Knowledge Transfer Award for 2008. The group has also developed a prototype for dental simulation and is involved in exciting research that will determine how best to train surgeons in VR, and provide real-time feedback to trainees.

CAREER FOCUS: WHY YOUR RESUME IS THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENT YOU CAN CREATEPresenter: Christine Brill, Careers Adviser,

Australia Medical Association

Chair: Dr Mikaela Seymour, Principal House Officer General Surgery, Sunshine Coast University Hospital; Hospital Representative, AMA Queensland Council of Doctors in Training; and Chair, Junior Medical Officer Fourm of Queensland

In this session, Christine will explain why you need to focus on your resume above all else when navigating the job stakes. Christine will step you through how to create and build a resume that showcases your strengths and best attributes, and how to ensure your resume lands at the top of the pile for the job/training program application.

Cover letters are often a challenge for early careers doctors. Christine will also advise how to best address selection criteria in your letter, before moving on to preparing and performing at your best for the interview.

A winning ‘package’ of your resume, cover letter, and statement addressing selection criteria will determine your success in obtaining an interview.

ABOVE AND BEYOND: MY STORY AND INSIGHT INTO GREAT PATIENT CARE

2 . 3 0 P M - 3 P M

Presenter: Dean Clifford, Business and Marketing Officer, Ken Mills Toyota; and Brand Ambassador, Toyota

Chair: Dr Honor Magon, Intern, Princess Alexandra Hospital; and Executive Member, AMA Queensland Council of Doctors in Training

Dean Clifford was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), an incredibly rare and debilitating skin condition with, currently, no cure. The more common term for sufferers is ‘Cotton Wool Kids’ as it usually results in an early death but in Dean’s case, the word ‘survivor’ is more apt.

Now 37, Dean continues to baffle medical science as one of the oldest survivors of what should be a fatal genetic skin condition. He wasn’t expected to live past the age of five but instead has become an inspirational, valuable, and productive member of the community.

Dean has overcome insurmountable odds to turn his life around and is a shining example of the power we all possess in life. Since 2005, Dean has travelled the world sharing his story with groups as diverse as primary school children to prime ministers.

Join Dean for a moving account of his journey as a patient and gain insight into how his incredible team of doctors has worked together to help him “move onwards and upwards.”
