Safeguarding and Pastoral Lead

Jackie’s role is to support families with a wide range of issues. These include children’s behaviour, sleeping and toileting. She can also support parents with issues regarding finances, housing etc

Nursery hours

School is open 7.45am - 5.15pm all year round

(The doors are not open until 7.45am so please do not arrive any earlier than this)

The school is closed for 1 week at Easter, 2 weeks in August and 2 weeks for Christmas as well as 2 other days for staff training (INSET)

Core Nursery hours: 8.40am-2.40pm Term Time Only

Breakfast Club 7.45am-8.40am

Afterschool Club 2.40pm-5.15pm

Your child will have their own attendance pattern within these hours/days(PLEASE note that there are also children in Lauren’s group who will attend 8.40am-2.40pm M-F

Practicalities• Children will get very messy at Nursery! So please ensure you send your

child in old clothes

• We do provide coats and wellies for playing outside, so their home coats don’t get dirty

• Please send a minimum of 2 changes of clothes in a bag every day - even if they are reliably toilet trained as accidents can still happen, children may also get wet/dirty during an activity. Please include spare socks and pants and a packet of baby wipes. (A spare pair of ‘cheap’ shoes would be useful in case your child does have a wet accident). Staff will remind you if you have forgotten the bag and ask you to go home and collect it

• Sun tan cream – in warm weather children will need to have suntan cream applied BEFORE they come to Nursery each day. We recommend you use the all day cream. Your child will need a named bottle of cream to keep at Nursery too

Bringing things from home into school

Please help us by not allowing your child to bring their own toys etc to school. It causes distress when other children want to play with them too and even more upset if they get lost or broken. We have an amazing range of resources for the children to use while at Nursery, so please support us in ensuring your child leaves their things at home. This also includes dummies and teated bottles.

Uniform• Uniform is voluntary however most families choose to purchase a School

sweatshirt. When dressing your child for Nursery they will find it easier to use the toilet and be independent if clothes are easy to pull up and down (elasticated waists are preferable rather than belts, buckles or braces)

• Sweatshirts are available to purchase from Reception at £7.75

• No jewellery to be worn to Nursery (Small stud earrings and 1 piece of jewellery for religious purposes as long as it does not pose a hazard to the child are permitted) – this ensures your child's safety while they are climbing and playing at Nursery. Staff will remind you of this if you forget and remove any jewellery if needed to keep safe until the end of the session

Shoes worn to Nursery must be velcro fastening not laces– this makes it much easier for children to learn to be independent in putting on their own shoes. No open toe sandals or slip on shoes to be worn – staff will speak to you on arrival if they feel shoes are not appropriate for Nursery

Wellies should not be worn for a full session.If the weather is bad and they wear their wellies to come to Nursery in then please bring a spare pair of shoes for your child to change into for the Nursery session. PLEASE remember we will provide wellies for when children play outside

NurseryYour child will now attend our school Nursery for their Nursery Education. This means that things will differ slightly to when they were in Kindergarten. They will need to be in Nursery during the core hours which are 8.40am-2.40pm. During this time is when the main teaching and application of skills takes place – this includes the daily adult led group times

It is therefore very important that your child is here between these hours on each day they are due to attend. This is to ensure they receive their full educational entitlement and to allow to make the best progress possible

Attendance and punctuality

• It is really important that children come every day they are due to attend, if they are to benefit from the Nursery experience. Your child’s key worker will follow up all absences to record on the register

• It is important your child arrives at Nursery on time each day to allow them to take part in the daily teaching group sessions (9.00 am). If you arrive after this time you will be asked to wait in the Reception until the group time teaching session has finished – this could be up to 20 minutes

• Alison will monitor attendance and punctuality each half term and if needed Jackie will arrange a discussion with you if we feel there may be a need for some support – if attendance drops below 85% or you are bringing your child to Nursery late (after 9.00am)

• If you are going on holiday during school time please let the staff know in advance

Absence/ Illness• If your child is really unwell and can’t come to school you need to call/text the

School no later than 9.00 am – Jackie will call you that day after 9.30 am if we haven’t heard from you

• If we cant get hold of you after trying 2 times we will phone the emergency contacts you have given us. If we cannot get hold of anyone we may need to do a home visit to check that your child is safe

• Children can still come to school with a cold or a cough. Please note we are unable to administer un-prescribed medicines for example: Calpol. They would need to have this before they come to Nursery

• If your child has sickness or diarrhoea they need to remain off Nursery for 48 hours after the last episode (don’t forget to give us a ring to let us know)

• Young children are prone to getting common illnesses when they first start Nursery such as Chicken Pox

• At some time during your child’s school life they may have head lice. Please do not worry if this happens but it is important that you treat your child’s hair immediately. Please let your child’s key worker know so a general letter can be sent out to other families. If left untreated and it becomes a prolonged issue we may ask that you keep your child at home until you have treated them successfully. Jackie is available for advice if needed

Drop off and collection

Please note the car park is for the use of staff and visitors ONLY

Parents can ONLY use the car park for dropping off and collection if it is before 8.20am and after 4.00pm

Please park considerately

Do not block other cars in or use the Disabled access spaces

Collection

• Please make sure you collect your child on time – children can get very upset if they are the last ones to be collected. If you are regularly collecting your child late then we do make a charge for this (See Kindergarten Prospectus)

• We take security really seriously – if anyone else is going to collect your child please tell us when you drop off or by telephone – they will need to know the password you set on the home visit. We will not let your child go home with someone you have not authorised or anybody under the age of 16

SEN and Speech and Language

• The staff observe and assess all children when they enter Nursery and then regularly throughout the year

• If staff have any concerns about your child's learning and development they will speak to you

• Children are screened for speech and language by Hilary and a referral made if needed - it is then really important that you take your child to the appointments. Hilary carries out the programmes devised by the S+L therapy team with your child during their Nursery sessions

• A referral can be made to the Specialist Early Years Service (SEYS) if we feel your child may need some extra support with learning and development

• Our Special Education Needs and Disability Co-ordinators are: Kerry and Verony

Becoming independent

• The Nursery year is a time for children to develop their independence in self help skills – this includes going to the toilet, putting on own shoes and coat and attempting to dress/undress themselves

• We will help children as needed with toileting but please be aware there is not a member staff based in the toilets and we encourage children to be as independent as possible

Toileting

We appreciate the fact that all children will have a toileting accident at some point during their time at Nursery - staff will change your child using the spare clothes from their bag

If your child is currently still in nappies during the day time or you need any other support with your child’s toileting needs Jackie can offer support and advice on toilet training ready for September

Meal times

Breakfast 7.45am-8.20am

Dinner 12.15pm - 1.00pm

Children will need a packed lunch

Tea 3.30pm -4.00pm

Café

Children have snack in our caféWe offer milk/water and a large selection of fruit/vegetables and other healthy snacks including crackers and cheese, dips, smoothies and toast

Dinner • The Nursery staff are with the children when they eat their dinner

• They will need a packed lunch in a lunch box with their name clearly labelled on the outside. Guidance on ‘healthy packed lunches’ is available. Please remember each portion of food is the same size as your child’s palm. Staff will speak to you if they feel your child’s lunch contains food that is not suitable

• They will not require a drink – we will provide water for all children

• Unfortunately we do not have the facility to keep the lunch in a fridge, or to warm food up – you can put in a small ice pack in the box if needed

• Please do not send ANY food containing nuts as we have children with severe allergies (This includes Nutella, Peanut butter, snickers and cereal bars etc)

• No sweets to be included as part of the lunch box

• A typical lunch may contain: A small sandwich/cob with tuna, carrot sticks, banana, cereal bar and a yogurt

Grapes MUST be cut up at home before coming to Nursery this is due to the risk of chokingThis also applies to cherry tomatoes and other small round foods

Stay and play sessions

We run parent stay and play sessions each term – 3 over the year

An adult needs to attend to support your child – if you can’t attend another family member is welcome to. We do try to offer a few sessions over the week to allow you the option of attending one

There are opportunities to find out about how to further support your child at home, ask questions, chat to staff and play with your child

Your attendance is very important in supporting your child’s learning and development

Parent consultations

You will be invited to attend 3 consultation evenings over the year – 1 each term

These are informal evenings where you can play in Nursery with your child with the opportunity to chat with the Lauren or Hayley and find out about your child’s progress

Book library

• Each child will receive a book bag which has been paid for by Nursery at a cost of £4.00 per bag. If this bag is lost parents will need to purchase a new one from Reception

• Your child will choose a book during the session that they can bring home to share with you. This is a valuable resource so please take the opportunity to enjoy the special time of sharing a book together at home

• It would be lovely if you can make a comment in the reading record each week so that we can see that the book has been shared at home

Please ensure their bag is in school on the allocated day

Lauren will let you know in September which is your child’s allocated day

Bags are for books ONLY and must not be used to carry food and drink

We run 6 story sharing sessions over the year that you will be invited to attend – we hope that an adult can attend as many as possible

Over the year we also run other sessions where parents are invited in to support their child these include Autumn Walk, Dough Disco and Yoga sessions

Any adult can attend – this could be an auntie or a grandparent

Tapestry

We will continue to use ‘Tapestry’ to record all of the observations we make of the children

Please continue to add your own contributions as it is fantastic to be able to share these with the children at Nursery

Safeguarding

All staff in the School have a duty of care to all of the children. If we have any concerns about your child we have to share these with Social Services. If we can talk to you about it first then we will, however there are times when this is unable to happen and we have to contact them first

Safeguarding

If your child has had a bump or accident at home please inform Lauren when you drop them off at Nursery – the staff will record it on a pre-existing injuries form and ask you to sign it

We will write an accident form for all accidents (bumps/scrapes etc) at Nursery and ask you to sign 2 copies at the end of the day. If it is a bump to the head or an accident needing medical care we will phone you immediately

Zero Tolerance

We have introduced a ‘zero tolerance’ program to address the issue of violence, aggression and unacceptable behaviour directed towards the school employees.

“Netherton Park Nursery School will not accept or tolerate any violence or aggression towards its

employees and any such act/behaviour will result in appropriate action or sanction being taken against the

person/s responsible.”

Mobile phones

No mobile phones can be used within the School. This is to ensure the safety of all

children.

Staff will ask you to put your phone away if you are seen using it at anytime within the School

Dudley Zoo pass

We have a Dudley Zoo pass that all of our families are welcome to borrow

The pass admits up to 2 adults and 3 children into the zoo for £7.50
