WELCOME BACK, OUR CHURCH IS OPEN! Our Parish’s Opening

The Coronavirus has challenged our lives in the last few months in ways that none of us would have imagined. All of the sacrifices that we have had to make, including suspending public masses, have been difficult. Yet we are doing our part to protect the common good and to ensure the safety of all our parishioners and staff. As we prepare to open our parish each week for public Masses and other gatherings, I ask you to keep a few things in mind. A general dispensation from the Sunday obligation: If you are in an at-risk health group or just don’t feel ready for public Masses, you should continue to stay home. If you are sick or have been recently exposed to the Coronavirus, please be considerate of others and do not come to the parish.

Masks will be required of all who come. Yet, parishioners should understand that there is an assumed risk any time they enter a public space. If you do choose to attend Mass know that attendance at Mass will be limited. With only a small number of parishioners allowed at each Mass to ensure social distancing, your opportunities to attend may be infrequent at first.

Please be aware that we clean after each service and can always use help. Please let us know if you

are interested in helping. We look forward to being again with you at Mass. Remember, your safety is a priority for us!

WELCOME PARISHIONERS- NEW CHURCH PROTOCOL o EVERYONE OVER THE AGE OF 2 SHOULD WEAR FACE MASKS. o EVERYONE MUST PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING – MARKINGS ARE IN CHURCH PEWS, ETC.

We would like to thank you for your continuous support and we appeal to your generous nature and ask you to support our parish and make consistent weekly contributions at this time. One way is to participate in our online giving program. First visit our website: https://ollmtarlington.org and click Give Online https://ollmtarlington.weshareonline.org/. Set up your account. Choose a payment option and customize your donation. You can use your debit card, credit card, checking or savings account. Another option is to use your Online Banking to make electronic contributions through “bill paying” options in your personal bank account. Your bank will then print and mail checks to the parish. You can also mail your envelopes to Our Lady of the Lake, 1 Park Avenue, Mt. Arlington, NJ 07856. We hope you and your family are in good health and good spirits. We will all be praying that this virus will run its course in the near future. We will keep in touch with any updated information as we are able by posting on the https://ollmtarlington.org website.

  • GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING / WE ARE A TITHING PARISH Tithing is a symbol of how God calls us to live our lives as stewards. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faithfulness, and it enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of your needs. Tithing is defined as one-tenth of your income. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2020

“Thus says the Lord: Observe what is right, do what is just, for my salvation is about to come, my justice is about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, loving the name of the Lord and becoming his servants - them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer... for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people.”

Rather than quickly pass over the passage of Isaiah, may we reread it, and see, this is what is happening in our church today.

The growth of the church in the United States has been built on two pillars – the Holy Spirit and immigration. How many people, like immigrants of old, have come to our parishes, bringing their faith, customs and traditions. They come with faith and wish to live and share their experience with us. Do we welcome them? Do we go out to meet them?

Pope Francis tells us the church grows by attraction, not by proselytizing. As missionary disciples he calls us to evangelize, to welcome all as part of our faith communities. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the mother of Jesus. Saint John Paul II was a Polish pope. Saint Oscar Romero was martyred in our time for the same faith. How blessed we are to be living and learning today.

The words “open” and “shut” refer to the power that will eventually be given to Peter. Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36 Paul writes ecstatic and praise-filled words about God’s plan for his people. In him, he writes, “all things are.” Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20 When Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter exclaims, “You are the Messiah!” Christ then declares that Peter is the “Rock” upon which he will build his Church, promising him the power “to bind” and “to loose.”
