Dear students and educators,

Greetings, and welcome to Berklee’s 50th annual High School Jazz Festival (HSJF). We are so pleased that you are here with us to experience our event, which highlights young artists, band and choir directors, music education, and jazz.

As the festival celebrates its 50th year, we are proud to say that it has become the largest of its kind in the United States, featuring thousands of student performers representing public and private high schools from across the country and beyond. The students embody the very best of high school instrumental and vocal jazz in large-and small-ensemble combinations, as well as solo vocalists in our Jazz Singers Showcase category.

One of our goals is to provide enriching opportunities for young artists to experience jazz from multiple angles (i.e., performing, attending clinics, visiting exhibits offered by Berklee and/or festival sponsors, and hearing performances by other musicians just like them). In addition, we recognize the power of bringing music teachers together to showcase the talents and efforts of their students, inspire each other, and develop/expand their professional networks. Accordingly, throughout the day, we have scheduled time for all of these activities, and we encourage you to take advantage of and explore whichever of the festival’s many facets most interest you.

The festival also includes a Jazz Education Forum and Luncheon—held on Friday, February 9—designed to bring directors, artists, industry representatives, and other arts leaders to Berklee to discuss best practices and the future of jazz education.

This year, we are pleased to recognize American jazz icon Ellis Marsalis with a Berklee honorary Doctor of Music degree. His music and legacy have influenced the artistic lives of many. It is fantastic to honor him and his significant contributions during our 50th event. We are also happy to announce that Diane Downs will be at our festival to receive a special acknowledgement of her impressive career as a jazz educator and leader of the Louisville Leopard Percussionists, an innovative program composed of more than 60 student musicians ages 7–16 from approximately 50 different schools in and around Louisville, Kentucky.

Jazz is an American art form that provides a vehicle for personal expression and creativity not found in other music genres. As you perform today, we encourage you to play and sing your best song, soar with personal expression through improvisation, and feel free to take musical risks. Most important, enjoy the opportunity to make music—with friends.

Thanks to everyone who assisted to make this festival happen—and to the teachers, booster groups, parents, school principals, bus drivers, and others who supported the thousands of young musicians here today. Together, we are facilitating essential musical moments in the development of young artists and hopefully creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Enjoy the day!

Best,

Rob Rose Darla S. Hanley

Vice President for Special Programs, Dean of the Professional Berklee College of Music; Education Division, Executive Director and Producer, HSJF Berklee College of Music; Coproducer/Director of Jazz Education and Programs, HSJF

Festival Dedication to Rob RoseThis festival is dedicated to its producer, Rob Rose, who recently announced his retirement. We thank you, Rob for your tireless dedication to Berklee College of Music, your work to support and advance the musical lives of thousands of students, and your ability to create ongoing, fresh, and relevant opportunities for music-making that inspire those who perform, as well as those who have the pleasure of listening.

Our High School Jazz Festival reflects your extraordinary vision and work. For five decades, our institution has created a forum for the performance of jazz music and a place where students and teachers alike receive essential feedback to grow personally and musically.

We see you, Rob, and recognize your many distinctive qualities:

Respected colleague, leader, mentor, and friendOriginal character, one-of-a-kindBrilliant visionary on and off campus

Real Outstanding musicianStudent-centered leaderEducator through and through

On this, the occasion of your final HSJF as producer, we congratulate you on your fine leadership and acknowledge you by creating two Five-Week Summer Performance Program scholarships in your name. Like you, the recipients (one vocalist, one instrumentalist) will represent the highest commitment to music and a desire to learn and make things happen.

We wish you the very best in your next chapter. We will miss your presence on campus, but will forever be better because of your influence.

Sincerely,Darla S. Hanley and the HSJF Planning Committee

Ellis MarsalisEllis Marsalis is regarded by jazz lovers and critics alike as among the world’s premier modern jazz pianists and bandleaders, and has more than 20 albums to his name. Marsalis is also one of the foremost jazz educators of all time, having taught lauded musicians and composers such as Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick, Jr., and Donald Harrison, Jr., among

many others, including four of his highly-accomplished sons who are also well-known musicians, composers, and educators: trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, saxophonist and Berklee alumnus Branford Marsalis, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis (also a Berklee alumnus), and drummer and vibraphonist Jason Marsalis. In 2011, the Marsalis family became the first-ever group recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters award.

The elder Marsalis holds a master’s degree in music education from Loyola University and his background in the field includes 12 years directing the jazz program at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, and another 12 years as the first chair of the jazz program at the University of New Orleans, where he remains professor emeritus. In between, he taught for three years and coordinated the jazz program at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2011, the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music opened in the Musicians’ Village of New Orleans’ Upper Ninth Ward with a mission of broadening opportunities for underserved children, youth, and musicians and providing a safe, positive environment for their musical, academic, and social development.

Diane DownsDiane Downs is the founder and artistic director of the Louisville Leopard Percussionists. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, she began playing music at home when she was very young. Downs participated in band throughout school and entered Kentucky’s Morehead State University on a music scholarship. After taking a year off to teach music in Montego

Bay, Jamaica, she returned to Morehead to resume her academic career, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education. She also earned a Rank 1 status from the University of Louisville in gifted education and jazz pedagogy.

Downs founded the Fabulous Leopard Percussionists in 1993, directing the group for 10 years. She then created the Louisville Leopard Percussionists, a nonprofit, community-based group. She also assists the We Got the Beat percussion ensemble in Fresno, California, and serves as a consultant to many elementary percussion ensemble programs around the United States. Downs, a teacher in the Jefferson County Public School System since 1988, teaches arts and humanities at Norton Elementary.

Downs is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Governor’s Award for excellence in arts education.

Festival HistoryFormer Berklee President Lee Eliot Berk initiated the college’s annual High School Jazz Festival, with the first taking place in March 1969. The inaugural HSJF, known as the first annual New England High School Stage Band Festival, featured 21 bands. Rush-Henrietta Central High School Band from New York, directed by Thomas Ghidiu, was the winning ensemble.

From 1971–1992, the festival flourished under director Norman Silver, former director of telecommunications at Berklee. Other critical HSJF leaders include festival producer Rob Rose, Berklee vice president for Special Programs; festival committee chair Larry Bethune, former Berklee vice president for Student Affairs; festival committee chair Larry Monroe, former Berklee vice president of International Programs; festival high school band director coordinator Steve Lipman, former Berklee assistant vice president of Student Affairs; and assistant festival director Rena Wade, former Berklee director of Auxiliary Services. Darla Hanley, dean of the Professional Education Division, joined the festival leadership team in 2013 as coproducer and director of jazz education and programs.

The festival planning committee has worked together for decades—facilitating the event and supporting each other and jazz education. It continues to be an impressive group of professionals dedicated to making the festival special. Important committee members over the years include Brad Berger, Cynthia Bethune, Elizabeth Dawe, Jennifer DeCicco, Tracy Gibbs, Maria Goldberg, Cathy Horn, Reggie Lofton, Jeff Mason, and Christina Quarles.

Since our first event, the HSJF has enjoyed annual increases in participation and offerings—moving from an event housed exclusively at Berklee’s 1140 Boylston Street building to its current location at Hynes Convention Center. Over the years, the festival has included clinics and workshops featuring Berklee faculty, staff, and students—along with Berklee City Music All-Stars and celebrity artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Abe Laboriel Sr., Branford Marsalis, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, to mention a few examples. The festival has grown to include categories of large and small instrumental ensembles, vocal ensembles, and most recently the Jazz Singers Showcase for solo vocalists, which began two years ago.

In 2014, the festival partnered with the Jazz Education Network (JEN) to create and offer the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year Award. Named after LaPorta, a Berklee legacy faculty member, the award is presented nationally at the JEN conference and again at the HSJF in recognition of teaching excellence in jazz. Recipients include:

• Daniel Gregerman, Niles North High School, Illinois (2014)• Janis Stockhouse, Bloomington High School North, Indiana (2015)• José Antonio Díaz, Diaz Music Institute and MacArthur Senior

High School, Texas (2016)• Robert Klevan, Monterey Jazz Festival, California (2017)• Diane Downs, Louisville Leopards, Kentucky (2018)

In 2010, the festival received a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation for the development of a website and the opportunity to create resources for jazz educators and students. Other festival support includes vendors such as The Jazz Education Network, JazzTimes Magazine, Vandoren, Vic Firth Company, Zildjian, Steve Lipman Associates, Dudacus, Penella Saxophone, David French Music Co., and many others.

32 33

In 2011, the festival added a student jazz composition competition in the name of Herb Pomeroy, another Berklee legacy faculty member, to elevate music writing and recognize talented high school students. The chair of Berklee’s Jazz Composition Department presents this prestigious award. Winning compositions have been featured in the HSJF evening showcase concerts, performed by some of Berklee’s finest jazz ensembles, including our Rainbow Band and Contemporary Jazz Orchestra.

Over the years, thousands of high school students and music educators have benefited from the performance evaluations, clinics, workshops, and scholarship opportunities available to you today. This year’s festival features approximately 225 ensembles, 59 adjudicators, several clinicians, and more than 3,000 student musicians, making it the country’s largest high school jazz festival. We are making festival history today, and look forward to what the future will bring.
