About the Kino Border Initiative
Founded in 2008 on the scriptural and humanitarian principles of human dignity for all and a responsibility to serve those in need, the bi-national Kino Border Initiative (KBI)* responds to the basic needs of deported migrants in Nogales, Sonora, and draws attention to the humanitarian crisis at the border. The KBI strives to put faith into action through the following programs:
1) Humanitarian Aid – The KBI provides warm meals, clothing, pastoral support, first aid and referrals to deported migrants at its Comedor and shelter to women and children at Casa Nazaret. Last year, the KBI served 45,969 meals and sheltered close to 500 women and children.
2) Education – Immersion experiences, community presentations and workshops at schools, church communities and others help to raise awareness, witness first-hand the reality of the border and encourage a committed response to the issue of immigration.
3) Research & Advocacy – To encourage investigation and documentation of the complexities of the border, the KBI hosts visiting scholars and students who are researching border issues, and works closely with partner organizations to advocate for just and humane immigration reform.
Today, the KBI relies on the support of churches throughout Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora to prepare and deliver food to the Comedor. Generous donations ensure a steady supply of food, clothing, medical supplies and financial support for this important mission.
∗ The KBI was inaugurated with support from the Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist, the California Province of the Society of Jesus, Jesuit Refugee Service/USA, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hermosillo, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, and the Mexican Province of the Society of Jesus.

The Deportation Process Hundreds of men, women and children are delivered by bus to the border daily and walk back into Mexico with little or no money, often with only the clothes on their back. They are frightened, desperate and feeling hopeless. Many have been exploited by coyotes, fallen prey to the drug cartels, or been abused in detention. Many have lived in the U.S. for years and are left far from home and separated from family. Nearly all are seeking a better life for themselves and their families.
2014 Highlights: • As pictured on the cover, bishops from
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) offered Mass at the border on April 1, 2014 in memory of the thousands of migrants who have died in the Sonoran desert over the past decade, and spent an afternoon with migrants at the KBI Comedor.
• In June, the KBI received an honorary doctorate for public service from Santa Clara University, accepted by KBI Executive Director, Fr. Sean Carroll, S.J. on behalf of the board and staff.
