CATHRYN SOPHIA TAKES SHOW ON THE ROADBy Claire Novak
Cash is King's Maryland-bred Cathryn Sophia has
taken her show to warmer climes and tougher
competition at Gulfstream Park.
The Street Boss filly, who won her first two starts
by a combined 29 lengths, steps into graded compa-
ny for the first time in the Jan. 30 Forward Gal (gr. II)
at Gulfstream Park.
Winner of the seven-furlong Gin Talking Stakes by
16 1/4 lengths at Laurel Park last out, Cathryn Sophia
will travel the same trip from post 2 with Joel Rosario.
The Forward Gal is a Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) qualifier,
and trainer John Servis has his eye on the Feb. 27 Davo-
na Dale (gr. II) going a mile as a potential next step.
"I think she'll handle a mile," Servis said. "As far as
two turns, I don't really know. She has such brilliant
speed you wonder how far she can carry that. But
she settles so nice, she'll probably carry it a long
way... We're going to inch up with each race and see
how she handles it." BH
The CBA Education Symposium will be held February 2 in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion.
• A discussion of sales yearlings (scoping and x-ray reports)
• A panel on maiden mares and transitioning to the breeding shed
• And a panel on breaking yearlings in Kentucky
Complimentary admission for CBA members; non-members may pay $50 admission or join the CBA for $100

GREENPOINTCRUSADER SEEKS HOLY BULL REDEMPTIONBy Blood-Horse Staff
Trainer Dominick Schettino hopes Greenpoint-
crusader puts a tough Breeders' Cup Juvenile
(gr. I) run behind him when he begins his 3-year-
old campaign.
The road to the Triple Crown begins in earnest
Jan. 30 with Gulfstream's Holy Bull (gr. II), in which
Greenpointcrusader (Bernardini) confronts five
opponents.
Greenpointcrusader won the Champagne (gr. I)
on a sloppy Belmont track last year but was sev-
enth to champion Nyquist in the Juvenile, having
been caught wide from post 10.
"He's fit and he looks good. He grew a lot and
matured since the Breeders' Cup," Schettino
said. "It was a tough race. I'm just drawing a line
through it, and hopefully he shows us that on
Saturday."
Greenpointcrusader has drawn gate five and
will be ridden for the first time by John Velazquez.
Unbeaten Mohaymen will start as the favorite
after winning the Nashua and Remsen (both gr. II)
last November over Flexibility, subsequently an easy
winner of the Jan. 2 Jerome (gr. III).
Also entered are Fellowship, winner of the In
Reality division of the Florida Sire Stakes, and
the highly regarded Conquest Big E, winner of
two of four starts. BH

CHANGES BENEFIT SAM HOUSTONBy Alastair Bull
Sam Houston's richest night of racing is reaping the
rewards of significant changes to its two major
Jan. 30 races.
Having been promoted to grade III, the $400,000
Houston Ladies Classic attracted a useful field while
the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup (gr. IIIT) drew
a strong field, after its distance increased from 1 1/8
to 1 1/2 miles.
Cassatt, trained by Larry Jones, will defend her
Ladies Classic title—she comes into the race off a
neck victory in the She's All In at Remington Park.
But she'll have to face some graded winners—the
likely favorite being Forever Unbridled, winner of the
Comely (gr. III) at Aqueduct Nov. 28.
Multiple grade II winner Kaigun heads the Connally
field, and carries minimum weight, having not won for
more than a year.
Kentucky Turf Club Cup (gr. IIIT) winner Da Big
Hoss, and Big John B, a dual winner of the Del Mar
Handicap (gr. IIT), are among his challengers. BH

NYQUIST, SONGBIRD TOP EXPERIMENTALBy Ron Mitchell
With the release of The Jockey Club's Experimen-
tal Free Handicap Jan. 29, it was no surprise
that the colt Nyquist was highweighted at 126 and
the filly Songbird, 125.
The five-member panel of racing secretaries who
evaluated all 2-year-olds that started in graded or listed
stakes races in the United States and Canada in 2015
was impressed with both undefeated champions.
The weight assigned Songbird was the highest
for a filly since Countess Diana in 1997 and only the
third time the list, published annually since 1935, had
weighted a filly at 125, signifying the committee's
respect.
"We thought she (Songbird) was one of the more
dominant fillies of the last decade," said New York Rac-
ing Association's Martin Panza. "Nyquist also won every
one of his races and deserved to be on top. We were
impressed with both."
Of the eligible 244 males and 221 fillies, 113 males
and 105 fillies were assigned weights. BH

BREEDING PROGRAM GROWS IN OHIOBy Tom LaMarra
The Ohio Thoroughbred Race Fund has set aside
more than $1.56 million for broodmare awards
this year—up 6.8% from 2015—as part of the incen-
tive package for the breeders and owners of state-
bred runners.
Overall, this year's OTRF will be worth $5.79
million, up 4.2% from last year, under a proposal
approved by the Ohio State Racing Commission Jan.
26. The OTRF, which provides money for state-bred
purses, supplements, and breeders' awards, has
doubled in two years because of racetrack video lot-
tery terminal revenue and a quarterly cut of revenue
from four non-track casinos in Ohio.
In a change for this year, broodmare (15% of
the purse) and stallion awards (10%) will be paid to
breeders whose horses finish first, second, or third
in eligible races. Stallion awards will increase 5% to
$230,000 under the OTRF budget.
The Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners re-
ported that about 60 stallions call Ohio home, double
the number registered five years ago. The number
of mares bred and number of registered foals have
grown steadily the past three years. BH
THE GENERAL IS BACKBy Ron Mitchell
Starlight Racing and Skychai Racing's General a
Rod, a leading 3-year-old of 2014, could be a force
to reckon with this year if his 7 1/2-length win in Gulf-
stream Park's fourth race Jan. 28 is any indication.
Favored in the five-horse field, the son of Roman
Ruler stalked the early pace before taking charge and
drawing off under a hand ride from John Velazquez.
His final time of 1:41.23 over a sealed, sloppy track
was just .26 off the track record for 1 1/16 miles. The
victory was his first since March 2015.
After placing in Gulfstream's top two Kentucky
Derby (gr. I) preps, General a Rod finished off the
board in all three 2014 Triple Crown races.
The Todd Pletcher trainee missed six months last
year to have an ankle chip removed. He returned
with a sixth-place finish Dec. 31.
"I thought it was very, very impressive," Star-
light's Jack Wolf said of the recent win. "Johnny
rated him perfectly and he just exploded. His stride
is unbelievable." BH

INVITING CORE PLAYERS TO BIGGEST EVENTS
When New York Racing Association put
tickets on sale this week for its three-day
Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, it made sure
to give special perks to its regular horseplayers
identified through their accounts at the racing
association's advance-deposit wagering plat-
form, NYRA Rewards.
NYRA Rewards members were given a code to
be among the first "in line" when tickets for the
Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and three-day festival went
on sale. Also, dis-
count tickets to
the three-day fes-
tival have been
made available
to NYRA Rewards
customers.
In an industry
that is some-
times short on
perks for its
core customers,
ADWs associat-
ed with tracks
and owned by
tracks are allow-
ing more cross
promotion of live
events. Offering a track's core bettors an inside
path to attend the biggest race days through
access and discounts can only build the relation-
ship between track and customer.
"This year we implemented a new presale
process designed to ensure that our most loyal,
most active horseplayers and fans would have
first opportunity to secure tickets and hospital-
ity for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival," said
NYRA director of communications and public
affairs John Durso. "We also put aside a limited
supply of festival passes at a reduced rate for
NYRA Rewards customers."
Throughout the year NYRA offers NYRA Re-
wards players on-track promotions that make
prime seats available or award discounts with
vendors.
"We have held special hospitality options at
Longshots on big days such as Wood Memorial
day and we also have a number of programs put
in place for our NYRA Rewards members at Bel-
mont Park and Saratoga Race Course, and our
season ticket holders at Saratoga," Durso said.
Keeneland gives members of its ADW, Keene-
landSelect, first crack
at prime seating for
Blue Grass Stakes
day and has special
days at the track for
account holders.
TwinSpires.com, the
Churchill Downs-
owned ADW, has spe-
cial days for account
holders throughout
the year at all of its
tracks.
"The biggest perk
for many of our play-
ers is the opportunity
for TSC Elite members
to participate in an
exclusive Kentucky Derby ticket presale ahead of
the general public, but we don't limit live racing
perks to only big bettors," said TwinSpires.com
director of communications Ed DeRosa.
"We have played host to TwinSpires days at
the races at tracks across the country, and we
encourage any of our players who want to expe-
rience the thrill of live racing to get in touch with
us about attending events at nearby tracks." BH
