Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat are the payment requirements?A non-refundable deposit of $20.00 per class must accompany all registrations and will be applied toward the class tuition. Tuition must be paid in full the Friday BEFORE class begins. If the balance has not been paid in full, your child’s spot will be released and given to another on the waiting list. If you need to make other arrangements, please call the Education Director at (352) 236-2851, ext. 107.

Is financial aid available for students?Financial aid is available for those who demonstrate true financial need. Applications are available at the box office and on our website. For more information, please call the Education Director at (352) 236-2851, ext. 107. Note: All students will be required to pay the $20.00 deposit per class whether or not financial aid is awarded. To ensure that all students can participate, we are only able to award a maximum of $200 in scholarship money per household.

What time should I arrive? Please arrive approximately 10 minutes early, especially the first day of class, so you and your student may meet the teacher and fill out any additional paperwork.

What if my child needs to miss a class? Please let us know in advance if your child will miss any classes so that teachers can adjust their lesson plans accordingly. Refunds cannot be made for missed classes.

Can parents sit in and watch the class? To help students let go of their inhibitions, we encourage parents not to accompany their child to class. You may either wait in the lobby (we have wi-fi!), or leave and pick up your child at the end of class. If you have questions about observing a class, please ask to speak to the Director of Education or class instructor.

What time should I pick up my child?Parents should arrive shortly before class ends to pick up their student. The pick-up/drop-off point is the Theatre’s front entrance. Our first priority is your child’s safety. Students will not be permitted to wait outside. Please be prompt.

Will there be a performance at the end of classes? Some have a “Sharing Day” on the last day of class for family and friends that may wish to observe. This may be an informal performance, a reading of a script, or they might simply share something the class has worked on. NOT EVERY CLASS WILL PRESENT A “PLAY” OR OTHER PERFORMANCE FOR SHARING DAY. Each instructor will design a sharing day based on the needs and skills of the class. If a performance is planned for sharing day, it is intended to be very informal and almost always done without lights, sets, props, or costumes.

Will my child need to memorize lines?Memorization is encouraged for most presentations. Assisting your child in memorization is a wonderful shared experience, especially for children with limited reading skills. If a performance of a short play is planned, you can expect some prompting, directions, or suggestions from the teacher. Please remember – this is an informal presentation, and the class has had limited time to prepare for sharing day!

Theatre skills are life skills! Our classes are very carefully planned to match the skill and emotional level of the student. For that reason, we only place students in classes within their age range.

In order to ensure that students derive maximum benefit and enjoyment from the classroom experience, students who become disruptive or disrespectful will be removed from class with no refund of tuition.

Special thanks to Gina England Photography for these photos from The Velveteen Rabbit.

Performance Class

By Hillary DePiano

Prince Tartaglia’s life is filled with misery until an evil witch and her equally evil henchmen curse him to search for three giant oranges. But this quest proves more fruitful than anyone could have imagined as a once-lonely prince discovers love, friendship, and laughter when he encounters wizards, monarchs, and a wild narrator who isn’t sure how far removed from the story he really is. All the raucous slapstick of the classic Commedia dell’Arte scenario by Carlo Gozzi is distilled into a fast-paced one-act.

There are 18 roles available (8 female, 6 male, and 4 non-gender-specific) for ages 10-18. Students are asked to prepare a short comedic monologue for their audition and will be asked to participate in a short-form improvisation game at the auditions.

Director: Kirstin KennedyAuditions: Monday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m. (It is only necessary to attend one night of auditions.)Rehearsals: Monday, March 19 – Friday, April 27, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Not all actors will be called to every rehearsal.)Performances on the Outdoor Stage: Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m.Tuition: $225

“Why am I paying tuition for my child to be in a show?”All Education Department youth productions are tuition-based because, while the focus is on rehearsing and preparing a show for performance, it is still a class. Students will be able to learn the fundamentals of stage performance while working towards a fully produced show. Please do not let the cost prevent your student from auditioning; scholarships and financial aid are available to help defray costs.
