WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

RECONCILED DIVERSITY

A few years ago, during Rome's quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Recon-ciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit's pentecostal work. Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God's children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit's gift reconciled diversity. Pentecost's rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday's vigil and Sunday's morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit's work from creation's beginning, through Jesus resurrection, into the church's earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit's gen-tle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strik-ingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by recon-ciled diversity. Next Weekend

Question: Why do we celebrate Pentecost ?

Answer: The book of Acts unpacks the events immediate-ly following Jesus' ascension into heaven. The Apostles and other disciples were told to pray in Jerusalem and await another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As the weeks ticked on, the Jewish Festival of Weeks approached. This festival took place 50 days after Pass-over and celebrated the giving of the law on Mount Sinai. The Festival of Weeks (or "Pentecost" in Greek) was a great pil-grimage feast, with Jews from all over the ancient world con-vening on Jerusalem for the celebration.

It was on Pentecost that God chose to send the Holy Spirit. Here, the new law of love was etched into the hearts of the dis-ciples. As he burst out onto the balcony above the multinational crowd, Peter proclaimed the message of the resurrection, and the Holy Spirit enabled every listener to hear in their native language. 3,000 people were baptized that day! The disciples - and every baptized person - receives the gifts and zeal neces-sary to bring a new message of salvation to the people of God.

When faced with a decision or a dilemma, where do we turn? Whenever we have to discern the proper course of action, the Holy Spirit is available as our advocate and guide. As Chris-tians, we look not to our world for direction but to God. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to help us find our path to prop-er thought and conduct. Wisdom, right judgment, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord are all per-fect tools for discernment. These gifts allow us to keep our rela-tionships and perspective in proper order. It is the Holy Spirit who opens our eyes to see that which we would otherwise overlook and opens our hearts to receive those people who would otherwise be ignored. Ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you today.

Music Ministry Our music ministry is on its “Summer Hiatus”. I am very grate-ful to all those who participate in our music ministry. They help our liturgies come alive with a “joyful noise”. Although we will not have rehearsals for our 9:30 and 11:30 choirs over the summer, you can feel free to contact me to find out about get-ting involved with the choir when we resume in the Fall. Additionally, our Children’s Choir (ages 5-11) and Junior Choir (11 and up), will resume starting in September. If you are interested in getting involved you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Our Resurrection Choir sings for funerals and is open to new members. We meet a half-hour before each funeral. No pre-vious experience necessary. If you are interested in this, you can call the parish office and leave me a message, or e-mail me at [email protected]. I came across this prayer for the Summer time which I’d like to share: Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.

Come join and learn the richness of the Catholic Faith.

Catholics; do you know a family member, friend, or neighbor, who has drifted away from the Catholic Church?

Our heartfelt THANK YOU! for your generous donations to the baby bottle campaign. Because of your generosity, we raised over $9000.00. We are blessed to have that amount matched by a donor to a total of $18,000.00. Because of these generous donations we are able to continue the good works of Perinatal ComfortCare and Foundations of Life. Thank you again for your belief in Perinatal ComfortCare and the Foundations of Life Programs. You have continually made a difference in the lives of women and men facing the challenges of pregnancy. Additionally, you have now made helping those parents, who have received a poor prenatal diag-nosis, find comfort as they love and care for their baby

Natura l Fami ly Planning

A Healthy Option For a Lifetime of Love Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for the natural, healthy, morally

acceptable methods of family planning recommended by the Catholic Church to help couples space, achieve, or avoid pregnancy. NFP reflects the dignity of the human

From Fall 2013 to Fall 2014, our parish participated in the Forward in Faith Campaign. As a diocese we raised over $32 million in commitments from more than 16,600 donors. OLOR has received our 3rd installment of $13,363, which brings our total Parish share received to $147,396. What a great way to kick off the new year! Thank you to those who have already completed your gift. We wouldn’t have been able to complete Mater Dei without your help! Thank you to those still making payments. Thank you to those still making payments. Your payments will help us receive future Parish Share funds!

ARE YOU REGISTERED ?

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? Although you may attend Mass on a regular basis, unless we have a registration form our records will not show you as a registered member. Please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all– especially singles, divorced or young fam-ilies who may not see the need to register. Registered parishioners receive helpful information about the parish. Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/ Confirmation spon-sor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the welcome center and our website www.ladyrosary.org
