Saved! then & nowRussell Wood is a survivor.

Sixty years ago he was saved by the anti-aircraft ordinances he maintained on the USS Wasp during World War II.

installed by a skilled team of medical experts at the Borgess Heart Institute.

Russell, 88 and a retired farmer who lives in Battle Creek, had heart problems over a number of years and had open-heart surgery at Borgess in 2008. “I felt good after the surgery at Borgess,” he said.

Some years later, however, he needed to be in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation centers for treatment of swollen legs, numbness on his right side, and shortness of breath.

“In May 2013, my leg really started swelling up and "dead on me. My heart was really screwed up. By the fall of 2013, I got fed up.

“Get me to Borgess.”

“I told them that what they were doing was not working and to get me to Borgess. They did.

“The nurses got me stabilized and they got the water out of me. A few days later, when I was looking at my heart monitor, I saw my beat get slower and suddenly drop. Boy, they rushed around and got my heart stabilized again.

“The next day they put in a pacemaker.”

As he was recovering, Dr. Vishal Gupta of the Borgess Cardiology Group, Borgess Heart Institute, told Russell that he was a good

Borgess holds Fall CEO ForumsCEO Forums were held earlier this month at Borgess-Pipp Hospital, Borgess at Woodbridge Hills, Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, Reverence Home Health & Hospice, Borgess Gardens and Borgess Medical Center.

The Forums were the last for Borgess President & CEO Paul Spaude, who is retiring on October 3. “I’ve truly enjoyed working with each of you these past nine years, and I will most certainly miss you,” Spaude told associates. He said a replacement search is currently underway for a new president and CEO, and is being led by the Board of Trustees. Spaude expects the new leader will be firmly in place by the end of the year.

The CEO Forums were moderated by Pete Krueger, administrative director, Borgess Health Human Resources, who facilitated questions for Spaude. The sessions focused on growth at Ascension Health and establishing a “One Ascension” common identity, and state and local initiatives, including the opening of Borgess Health Park in Battle Creek and the recent conversion to the Symphony operations system. Other items discussed included the planned launch of the Borgess Vascular Institute, financial reports, and the 125th anniversary celebration of Borgess.

Borgess sponsors MI Harvest GatheringThe 2014 Michigan Food Harvest Gathering, supporting local pantries, will be held September 22-October 3. The Food Harvest Gathering is an opportunity to help others in need. A $10 donation, for example, provides hungry families with $100 worth of food.

Mary Heintzkill, director, spiritual care, Borgess Health; and Sr. Sue McCrery, spiritual care specialist, mission integration, Borgess Health, are the coordinators for this year’s effort. Monetary donations are again welcome, as the food pantries can purchase food at greatly reduced prices. The pantries, for example, can purchase a case of cereal for $4.

Monetary donations, including checks, can be sent to Borgess Medical Center Spiritual Care. Food contributions can be placed in boxes outside the Borgess Medical Center cafeteria or brought to Spiritual Care. Associates who live in Kalamazoo County can make checks out to Loaves and Fishes, while residents of Calhoun County can make checks out to Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Associates who live in Allegan County can choose to make checks out to Christian Neighbors. Associates at Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital can support the local food banks in the Dowagiac area.

To offer assistance or ask questions about MI Food Harvest Gathering, contact Mary Heintzkill at (269) 226.5937 or [email protected], or Sr. Sue McCrery at (269) 226.7061 or [email protected].

HR ‘Drop-in’ sessionsBorgess Health Human Resources will sponsor “drop-in” sessions during the first two weeks of October to cover in depth the changes that were communicated in a letter to associates last July from Paul Spaude, president & CEO, Borgess Health. The changes in the letter focused on retirement, medical and pharmacy plan, and Associate Premium and Wellness Programs.

Below are the dates, locations and times for the drop in sessions.

WWMT’s Doc Talk features Russell Wood & Dr. Vishal GuptaThe September 25th edition of WWMT’s “Doc Talk” featured interviews with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) patient Russell Wood and Dr. Vishal Gupta, Borgess Cardiology Group, Borgess Heart Institute. To learn more about TAVR and Russell Wood, please visit thatswhere.com.

#$%'*+" /Education Center. Several TAVR patients offered short presentations with appreciative comments.

candidate for a relatively new procedure called the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, or TAVR.

TAVR replaces a diseased aortic valve cobalt chromium and polymer. The procedure does not require the use of a heart-lung machine. During surgery, the replacement valve is inserted into the heart through an artery in the leg or chest through a balloon catheter. Once in properly by fully opening and closing at the correct time. Recovery is much faster than traditional open-chest and open- heart surgery.

“They were going to do the operation in January, but the weather was too darn

bad,” Russell said. One night, however, he was awakened by a shock. “It felt like somebody hooked me up to a 110-volt plug,” he said.

He was transported to Borgess by ambulance, and on Valentine’s Day, Dr. Gupta and his team performed the TAVR procedure.

“They said it usually takes four hours, but they did it in three,” Russell said. “There were no side effects, no headache, no nothing. I felt good right away.”

Serious congestive heart failure

“When I saw Russell, he had serious congestive heart failure,” Dr. Gupta said. “He couldn’t even walk.

“The fact that he was 88 years old and had had a previous open-heart surgery made him a poor risk for another surgery. That’s why he was a good candidate for the

TAVR procedure.”

Russell has returned periodically to Borgess for check-ups and said that his breathing has improved.

“The care at Bogress is really good,” he all pleasant and when I would kid one of the nurses aides, she’d come right back at me and we’d laugh. That’s important kind of care.

“Dr. Gupta is darn good. He knows what he is talking about.”

Russell’s congestive heart failure was the result of what is called aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that keeps the valve from opening fully and impedes and without treatment, half of all people who have symptoms die within an average of two years.

Borgess Health will continue the flu vaccination program consistent with what was implemented for the 2013-2014 flu season. To promote a safer environment for patients, associates and family members, associates are required to choose one of the following options:

 Obtain the flu vaccine; or

Sign a declination form. Declination forms will be available where vaccines are administered throughout Borgess Health as of Monday, Oct. 6, 2014. Associates having patient con-tact who choose not to obtain the flu vaccine must wear a surgical mask when provid-ing patient care and/or when having patient contact (i.e., within three feet of a patient). Associates with no patient contact will not be required to wear a mask.

Associates who decline the flu vaccine due to medical contraindications will be required to provide documentation of the medical reason for declining. These associates will also be required to wear a mask while at work if they have patient contact.

Flu vaccinations will be available be-ginning Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Borgess CorpFit Occupa-tional Health Clinic, 4C South, Borgess Medical Center (effective Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, CorpFit hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Borgess at Woodbridge Hills and Battle Creek

Occupational Health hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, Borgess CorpFit nurses will be rounding on units within Borgess Medi-cal Center. Associates of other Borgess Health entities will receive further infor-mation regarding vaccination schedules at their particular facility.

Beyond the benefits to patients and co-workers, obtaining the flu vaccine through Borgess has these additional benefits:

Provides a higher probability that the associate receiving the vaccine will not be stricken with the flu.

No cost to associates if the flu vaccine is obtained through Borgess between Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, and Friday, Dec. 5, 2014.

Relief from Borgess attendance policies if an associate who received the flu vaccination is absent from work for the flu. Physician documentation of an influenza diagnosis must be provided in order to receive relief from time and attendance violations.

Logistically, the process will be handled as follows:

For purposes of the flu vaccination and/or wearing the surgical mask, the

“flu season” will be considered in effect from Monday, Oct. 6, 2014,

through Thursday, April 30, 2015, or later as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Associates who are required to wear a mask and fail to do so will be subject to correc-tive action.

Associates must present employee ID at time of vaccination.

As a condition of Medical Staff appointment and/or clinical privileges, Borgess requires annual influenza vaccination of all medical staff who have job responsibilities or physical presence inside any Borgess Health-owned and operated facility or clinic in the course of conducting their work. Contact Medical Staff Services at (269) 226.4879 for information or assistance.
