Will reducing plastics consumption
reduce crude oil usage?
Only 4% of oil and
gas in Europe are
used for
manufacturing
plastics
and
plastics contribute
significantly to
energy savings and
emission
reductions.

Packaging
Did you know:
• that 50% of EU goods
are packaged in
plastics
• that plastics account
for only 20% of
packaging by weight.
Plastic packaging:
When more means less
On average only 1 to 3% of a packed product’s weight it due to plastics
packaging:
• A plastic film of 2g packs 200g cheese
• A plastic bottle of 35g contains 1.5 litres beverage
Glass jars

Plastic bags

Without plastics trucks would increase their travel frequency by 50%.

PC with PET from recycled bottles
• PC blended with 30% post-consumer recycled PET offers alternative to virgin
polymer
• Recycled PET is available in large quantities and prime quality
• Price competitive FR recycling blends for TV housings
• Optically perfect „Class A“ automotive exterior parts from recycled PC & PET

Plastics from roof to cellar
The unique nature of plastics means that it can be used throughout the house.
The plastics paradox: The more you
use – the more energy you save

Plastics save much more energy and GHG emissions than is required to
produce the plastics.
Plastics are used:
• To enable passive ventilation and
preheating of fresh air
• To transfer air, water and sewage
efficiently and hygienically
• In energy-efficient windows and
window frames
• In energy-saving domestic
appliances
• To super-insulate and
weather-proof the structure
Unlimited opportunities to save
natural resources and energy
• Approximately 50 million kWh of energy
is saved each year in the EU through the
use of polyurethane insulation.
• Wall insulation of 1.6 cm of PUR has the
same insulation efficiency as a 1.34 m
thick concrete wall.*
• PUR are an important contributor to
energy conservation in refrigerators.
Models designated A++ are 60 % more
efficient than refrigerators 15 years ago.

Revolutionized car designs
Lightweight plastics give
designers and engineers the
freedom to create innovative
concepts and improve fuel
consumption.
Reduced Car Weight by
new Technologies and Materials
Plastics share: 90 kg
Total Weight: 850 kg
Plastic share: 240 kg (140 kg*)
Total Weight: 1360 kg (1750 kg*)* Based on 1990 technical standards
390 kg reduced weight by new technologies and materials are providing approx.
2,0 l fuel saving per 100 km.
Based on 30.000 km per year this results in a reduction of approx. 1,4 t CO2 emission!!

New transport technologies
Stronger and lighter airplanes
In aircraft, where every gram
counts, plastics are used:
•in doors, windows, seats and
interior trim
•in rudders and stabilisers, wing
housings, flaps, spoilers and tyres
•to save fuel and cash on every
flight.
The Airbus A380 is made of
22% composite plastics
allowing 15% fuel savings.
 50% of composite plastics
make the Boeing 787
Dreamliner 20% lighter and
reduce fuel consumption by
20%.

use of landfills
Behaviour
Plastics do not pollute as such, but are unfortunately littered and ending up in
oceans.
Plastics are too
valuable to be wasted!
It is a resource.
Do plastics pollute?
