As Christmases go, this is probably going to be a lean one for many people, but that hasn’t held back the elves of the OCWA Christmas Toy Program. They are looking to complete and dis- tribute over 4,800 toys this Christmas. Hopefully that translates into 4,800 smiles this holiday season. The Freedom Pen turners haven’t been left out of the equation either for they have sent thousands of hand made wooden pens to our service people serving their country overseas, many of whom won’t be home for Christmas. They have also produced personal- ized purple-heart pens for the wounded warriors coming home from combat. It is my sincere hope that the number of purple-heart pens they make will significantly decrease in the near future. For all of the negative events that we have to endure daily on the nightly news, it’s nice to know that the members of the OCWA, and other organizations like it, are trying to have a positive impact on their fellow citi- zens. It is in recognition of all the good things that the members of the OCWA do, that we, the Board of Directors, try to give a little something back in the form of our Annual Christmas Party. The party will be on Friday December 12 th , 2008 in the main room of the Tustin Senior Center, and it is necessary to make reservations for the party by logging into the www.ocwoodworkers.com website, and clicking the Christmas Party link. For those of you new members, or old members, who have trouble logging in, just print your first initial, and last name into the user box, and do the same in the password box. You can change the password once you’ve logged in if you wish (Example: Username; jsmith, Password; jsmith). If you still can’t get in, then call Mr. Ed Straub, and he will get you on the list. Please don’t wait until the last minute, because we need to get a count of attendees for the Caterers. Dinner will be catered, and is very generously sponsored again by Joe Lomax of Austin Hardwoods and Hardware of Santa Ana. The party will be held in lieu of our standard Thursday night meeting, and it will start at 7:00 P.M., and end at 9:00 P.M. We will have door prizes, and a gift exchange, and hopefully we can coax Ol’ Santa into showing up, but he and Mrs. Claus have been very busy with the Breast Cancer Angels, so there is a chance the Ol’ Prez may have to take his place. Oh boy. If you participate in the gift exchange, we ask that the gifts not be over twenty-five dollars, but they can also be hand made gifts, which are always appreciated. Finally, we’ve seen an end to another long and nasty election season, but after all of the innuendo, accusations, and attacks, the Board of Directors will remain intact for another season of Service with James Santhon as President, Chester Maharaj as Vice President, Ralph Crowther as Treasurer, and Ed Straub as Secretary. Good luck fellas. This has been a particularly memorable year for the OCWA. The dedication of our members in fighting through tragedy, and disease to be of service to the OCWA, and our community has been inspiring, and their efforts have made our successes this year all the more meaningful. I have never been prouder of our members than I am as of this writing, and I want to thank all of the members of the OCWA, and wish all of you the happiest, and healthiest of Holiday Seasons. I would like to thank our President James Santhon for the wonderful presentation he gave on the restora-tion and know how of the "Woody Project" he has been working on . I know of a few people who would love to do something so challenging but will think twice if they were at the meeting. Restoring cars is one thing, but "Woodies" is a whole different ball game.

At Thursday's meeting we had Bruce Lewellyn demonstrate "Christmas Ornaments" What a great job! Bruce, thank you.

A friend asked me to check out this very handy workbench on the web. I have enclosed the address below. It is a bench named "WALKO" apparently made in Australia. Check it out. I think it retails for about $700 to $850.

You can see more at this youtube site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqW6GsN9Qs4 and you can see even more at: http://www.walko-tools.com/EngTmp.htm

As you all know I am still looking for someone to help with the refresh-ments on the second Thursdays of the month , please let me know if you are interested. I also want to thank PAM for bringing all those wonderful homemade good-ies. A big thank you to Dick Forman for a great job as our Woodturning President and also thank his wife MARGE for the cookies she sent to our last meeting.

We are not having a January meeting but will be back on February 5th with a demonstration by Wayne from Battery Builders located at 323 S. Del Giorgio Road in Anaheim.

Any members who have speakers they would like to hear next year, this is your opportunity to give me a call (949) 422-4522.

Cerritos college is looking for part-time woodworking in-structors. You can contact them at http://cms.cerritos.edu/hr/eo-faculty-pt. if any of you are interested.

Hope to see all of you at the Christmas Party on Decem-ber 12th.

Shavings President’s Message Dick Foreman

Victor Cohn was elected President of the Turners Club at the November 20th meeting. The voting was unanimous (HOO-RAY!). I presented Victor with a President’s Workbook to help him in his new endeavor. Vic has definite plans and goals, which he promised to tell us about later. I (we) wish him the best of luck on his path next year. The Annual Woodturning, and the first Pen Turning, Contests went smoothly. Vic-tor handled the check in with Al Whitcomb, Ross Gilroy, Craig Chambers, and Art Fitzpatrick doing the judging, critiquing and presenting the awards. You will see the winners and their pictures on the following pages. There were 26 turn-ings with almost half being segmented and 24 pens entered in the contests. Harry Williams won the Fred Adam Memorial Polychromatic Award. Please accept my congratulations to all of the members that participated in the contests. Bruce Lewellyn was the club demon-

strator at the November meeting. He demonstrated the gluing up of stave pieces and proceeded to turn a Christmas Ornament of Holly with dyed dividers, and a finial and an icicle of Ebony. Bruce had handouts and many fine examples of his Christmas Ornaments. Bruce also explained how to complete a Sea Urchin Ornament and had several beautiful ones on display. A great demonstration; you did yourself proud Bruce! The Challenge for the December 18th meeting will be Christmas Orna-ments; surprise! Since there are an unlimited number of styles for orna-ments, I do expect to see a large number of them for Bruce to judge. Do not forget that the Challenge Ironman for 2008 will also be named. On December 18th Art Fitzpatrick will demonstrate the turning of a “Square Edged Bowl”. Art is an old hand (young at heart though) at demonstrating and teaching. I am sure Art will include a pitch on the Cindy Drozda all day profes-sional demonstration to be held on January 31, 2009. About 15 members have signed up already so don’t miss out on this one.

Craft Supply USA asked the Turners Club to help mentor pen making at their booth at the Woodworking Show at the Orange County Fairgrounds. It was fun and rewarding (a visitor at the November meeting, and maybe a new member, attended with his pen) . The mentors were George Plummer, Bruce Potter, Bill Rogers, Les Rogers, Bob Gibbs and me. Thanks for helping out on short notice guys. This is my last Turners presidents’ article for the newsletter. I am relinquishing this task to Victor henceforth. It takes many members, way too many to list, to run an organization such as the Turners Club, and I would like to thank everyone for their support over the last two years. I have had fun and enjoyed this opportunity. I will be around and active as Victor has given me several tasks on committees, workshops and I do hope to assist him in any other way I can. Have fun turning and see you in December at the Christmas Party and the Turners meeting!

Bill and the elves are busy delivering the toys that they made this year so there will not be a Toy Program article this month. Here is a sample of what they

First in the order of events I want to congratulate Bill Smith for winning the Bonus $100.00 gift card from Rockler. I hope it will come in handy with the holidays coming up. It’s your gift so enjoy it. Any-one wishing to buy a bonus ticket, they are actually free. You get one automatically when you buy 10 raffle tickets at once. And for the newcomers, incase you don’t know: $1 buys one ticket, $5 buys 6 tickets, and $10 buys 13 tickets and the free bonus ticket. Well, I don’t know about you but I really enjoyed James’ presenta-tion of restoring their Woody. I actually never realized there were so many cars like that made. It was very informative and fun. The only woody I ever knew about was the one the Beach Boys used to sing about with the surf board on top.

As usual, if you would like to email me and tell me something you would like to see offered in the raffle, I would like to hear from you… Send your note to: [email protected] SUBJECT: OCWA Raffle Very important: include OCWA RAFFLE in the subject. I have made an email filter to find messages with OCWA in the subject. I wont get it unless you do and I don’t want to miss hearing from you so I can pick out things based on your preferences.

I haven’t been updating my pic’s as much the last few weeks with the fires and all. BUT, I am trying very hard to finish my vanities to put them up in my 101 picture album. I had some trouble on the drawers and had to get out my class notes. Anyone who has ever tried to install Blum slides knows it’s no picnic, but if you get your measurements right it works like clockwork. The measurements? Just subtract 1 15/16" off your drawer opening and that is the dimension that needs to be held on the bottom of your drawer inside the drawer sides. I needed to beef mine up about 1/32" and they worked fine. But then I discovered my middle drawers are all 1/8" too shallow. Does it ever end? To see my pics:

Just do a Google Search for cheri_lm links to my pictures and albums come up, click on the one that says pictures and albums and from there you get a page of all of my albums. Feel free to browse any of my albums, they are all available to the public. In closing, thank you very much for your support of the raffle drawing. It helps the club, and this last month we made $97.00. It is very much appreciated. And thanks

to the club for the budget that helps to make it happen along with the generosity of our sponsors. We couldn’t do it without you all. See you all at the Christmas Din-ner, REMEMBER it’s the SECOND week of the month this time. It seems I always forget and show up a week early.

OCWA 2008 = 2209 ….. We did it again, we made over two thousand Freedom Pens this year!

I am so proud to be a part of our on-going Freedom Pen Project supporting our young men and women who have been serving our nation for over four years. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you my fellow woodworking friends. We have three of our members besides me who have turned over two hundred pens, Les Rogers 370, Bob Gibbs and Bruce Potter with 430 each. That is so amazing!!!! Thank you all for either making the pens or contributing financially. My good friend Jim Anderson contributes every month and most recently David Wade has been bringing in sand paper for sale and the proceeds go to the Freedom Pen Project. Thank you David and the persons who donated the sand paper! This month I was able to deposit $334.00 and a big part of that was from the sale of the sandpaper.

Thanks to General Mike I was able to get an updated list of the Wounded Warriors and there are 36 new Warriors who will be receiving purpleheart pens that Bruce Potter has been making especially for them. Larry Roth will be engraving their names on the pens and I will have the pleasure of delivering the pens and getting as many hugs as possible. Just for a little extra in-surance for the hugs I will bake some Chocolate chip cookies. That usually does the trick!!! ;-) This past week I received an email from Captain Khieem Jack-son (General Mike’s former aide) who is stationed in Iraq to say thank you to all of you and wish-ing you all the best for the holi-days. Also, pic-tures of his two beautiful little children Elija and Savanna.

Khieem will miss Christmas with his family and my best wishes go out to him an all the men and women who will not be so fortunate as us to spend the holidays with their loved ones.

2009 Orange County Fair Ed Straub 2009 Fine Art Woodworking - Orange County Fair - July 10 through August 9

2008 saw some significant changes in the Fine Art Woodworking competition at the Orange County Fair. The competition was relocated to a larger area, in Building 15, 16 high end display cases were provided by the OCWA Build team for the smaller entries, the number demonstration booths was in-creased to three, and the number of Division-Class entry categories was increased by 9 for both Ap-prentice and Master woodworkers. There were 186 entries total. There were 87 Apprentice and 99 Master Entries. In 2009 several more changes are planned, one entry type has been added, a new Division-Class category for "Boxes". In previous years, accessories such as desk organizers, shelf units, cutting boards, etc were competing with magnificent jew-elry boxes. The Fair will be longer in 2009, July 10 through August 9. The purpose of this article is to point out a few things you should keep in mind when choosing what item you should design and build for this competition. We will limit this discussion to the Apprentices. I'll talk about the Masters in the next issue. Notice the spread sheet of entries from previous years shown below. Keep in mind that there are potentially three money ribbons, and two Honor ribbons for each Division-Class entry. There are two additional possible money ribbons for each Division. There will also be industrial awards possible. If there are no entries in a Class, no ribbons are possible. A first place ribbon will graduate an Apprentice to the Master Category. Examine the spread of entries for Furniture, Turnings, and Accessories for 2004 through 2008. In Furniture there is a reasonable amount of competition. In Open Form turnings there is a lot of competition. A couple of competitors en-tered more than one Open Form turning there in essence competing against them selves. In Traditional Accessories only one entry was submitted. No competition there. Remember that the judge's only award ribbons when a piece warrants it. Look at the spread of entries for all Division-Class entries for 2008. Only one Apprentice was willing to design a piece of Art/Studio furniture. You all read magazines like Fine Woodworking, Woodwork, and Woodworker West. You know what Art/Studio Furniture is. Why is it that only one Apprentice will test his/her abilities? There are no plans for Art/Studio furniture in Popular Woodworking, Workbench, Shop Notes, Wood, Old Tool Journal, American Woodworker, Wood Worker's Journal, or This Old House. You will have to let the design juices flow. There was also only one Ap-prentice Clock entered. All you have to do is build a beautiful box and put a clock mechanism in it. For Marquetry/Vaneering you do need a steady hand. A scroll saw or sharp X-Acto blades are a good idea too. Carving/Sculpture really came on strong in their first year in the Fine Art Woodwork-ing competition. Carvers have frequent competitions, with slightly different rules. If their numbers stay up, the Division will need to be subdivided in the future. Frank Filippone, Ed Miller, Timothy Moore, Chet Brisco, Don Scott, Leonard Musgrave, Frank Andrews(3), John Lindemann, Barb Schmit and George Raymond all graduated from Apprentice to Master by winning First place ribbons (photos on the next page). A total of twelve first place ribbons were awarded in the Apprentice Category. We need more apprentices to fill the ranks. The 2009 Competition Handbook will be published here soon.
