We love autumn in our house. Jewelled coloured leaves crunching underfoot on long family walks, hunting for conkers, getting dressed up for Halloween and crowding round the bonfire on November 5.

This year we’ve also gone one further and made use of the abundance of blackberries in the garden to make jars of blackberry jam and relish. The jam has been a huge hit with family and friends and we’ve only got one jar left for ourselves! I’ve squirreled the relish away at the back of a cupboard to mature in time for Christmas when I plan to serve it alongside the cheese board.

In your autumn edition of The Scallymag we have lots of ideas for family days out – the fantastic Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden and the National Railway Museum in York.

We also welcome our guest columnist Rachel Cullen on page 6 who writes about the fine art of juggling motherhood and business. I can certainly relate to that Rachel!

And we’re delighted to have teamed up with local crime writers RC Bridgestock and Prego Italian Restaurant in Brighouse for a fantastic children’s story writing competition. Read all about it on pages 8 and 9 and get your entries flooding in! There are some fantastic prizes.

Hope you enjoy the read! From my family to yours,Mel

GGGrrreeeeeetttiiinnngggCCCaaarrrdddsssWe have three keys values at The Sun Inn: traceability, quality and fairness.

Traceability – We work carefully with local suppliers, and we know them all by name.

Quality – We make it our mission to ensure that only the best dishes possible leave our kitchen.

Fairness – From the price we pay our suppliers, the wages of our employees, and the price we charge our customers, we try to be as fair and as transparent as possible. If the business does well we make sure everyone feels the benefit.

Together these 3 things make our community.

We believe in what we do, and only employ those who do too.

Phoenix Trading is a direct selling, independent card publishing house, marketing a range of top quality cards, stationery and accessories at fantastic prices (£1.20 a card) along with a fabulous Christmas range from August. It is flexible with no targets, no pressure but plenty of support.

Independent Phoenix trader Janette Lloyd, who is based locally, said: “We are UK based, with operations also in Australia, New Zealand and France.

“The products are not available in any shops so I run my business through a mix of mail order, house parties, fab bags, fundraising events and stalls. We have regular new product launches with one brochure and four supplements a year. I have been a Phoenix Trader for a while and it is still exciting when my new orders arrive. This business fits in perfectly with my family life; my children even help unpack the boxes and sort out the brochures.

“If you would like to place an order, book a party, host a fab bag or join my team then get in touch with me to discuss. It costs from just £30 to join as a Trader. This includes a Business Kit to help you to be ‘Instantly in Business’. There is also an option to purchase a Special Offer Pack at the time of joining to give you enough products to start making sales from day one.

“With approx 12000 Traders worldwide as at February 2013, there were just 67 Traders in the HD area and 18 Traders in the HX area. If you would like an idea for any other postcode, just ask! “I look forward to hearing from you about all things Phoenix!”

Having been working unhappily as a solicitor during my ‘carefree’ 20s, I changed paths completely in 2007. In my innocence, and with all the freedom of youth, I went on to set up my own fitness business, complete with training studio, (with not insignificant fixed overheads), luckily many clients to keep happy, and I was at last my own boss. Heaven! I was able to work on my terms, with whom I chose, at times to suit, and it was the best decision I ever made. The freedom, together with a new sense of purpose and drive was like a new lease of life for me. I ticked along nicely in my own little world until BANG! I met John in late 2009 and together we decided to try for a family. For me, the arrival of my Mr Right coincided with my internal body clock, and they made the possibility of motherhood become a reality to me for the first time. However, I had left the ‘security’ of my previous legal career complete

with comfortable salary and maternity provision. I had my own business to run, without any safety net in place, and no idea how I would manage the transition into motherhood whilst keeping my business afloat. My desire to become a mum and for us to have a family was so strong. I believed that somehow, both my business and I would survive. I just didn’t know how. Fast-forward to September 2010 and the arrival of our beautiful little girl. After a whole 4 weeks maternity leave, and despite the most basic self-employed Maternity Allowance, I was back at work. It’s true to say that nothing would ever be the same again. My survival instinct kicked in, for both my business, and myself at the same time as adjusting to being a brand new mum. I found that the most important attributes in dealing with the arrival of motherhood were the ability to adapt and to plan ahead with military precision. To be adaptable was to be able to create opportunity from the change in circumstances. So, I adapted the business to turn my newfound

motherhood into a strength. I introduced ‘Mums & Babies’ fitness classes where I was able to meet other new mums, without incurring the cost of my own childcare, whilst adding to what my business could offer to others. It was only a small aspect of the business, but that small adaptation worked well for us. I have fond memories of that time, although it was hard work, and there remained many other challenges. I recall having business meetings whilst literally juggling Tilly up and down on my knee, apologetically dabbing milky vomit from my trousers and sweating profusely. The memories of those times are not so good, but they fill me with pride in knowing I did all I possibly could to keep the plates successfully spinning. Tilly is now a toddler, and I subsequently sold the business in 2012. The changing stages of motherhood present different challenges, and I’ve since moved on to new projects, but that’s another chapter…

As I sit here with Tree Fu Tom on the television, my daughter (aged 3) by my side and laptop tentatively perched on my knee (oops - just have to break off for daughter’s potty stop…) you can picture the scene in our house. My guess is it will be very much

the same in homes up and down the land.

The long summer holidays are over and a new academic year

has begun with Hipperholme Grammar School welcoming its new Year 7 intake at the Senior School.

Assembly on the first day back began with Headmaster Mr Jack Williams welcoming all the new pupils as, for the first time, they joined in singing the School Song ‘Carmen Hipperholmiense’ in Latin. In accordance with the annual ritual of the first day of the year, each Year 7 pupil was invited onto the stage to receive their tie (for the boys) and lapel badge (for the girls) which signifies their membership of one of the three Houses, Broadley, Lister and Sunderland, each being a founding benefactor of the School in 1648.

Mr Williams then went on to congratulate the new ‘Scholars’, a small group of pupils who have been awarded a Scholarship to study at the School for the next 5 years. Each pupil has earned their Scholarship through hard work, effort and achievement academically, for musical talent or sporting excellence and will be an outstanding role model as they progress through the School.

This year, Scholarships were awarded to:

Nichola Backhouse – Academic Scholarship

Lia Brehmer – Choral Scholarship

Dryw Jones – Academic Scholarship

Charlie Kershaw – Sport Scholarship

Megan Mouncey – Music Scholarship

Isabelle Williams – Academic Scholarship

For the first time, the School has this year offered a new 100% award, the Fenton Scholarship, which was awarded to Isabelle Williams for her outstanding performance in the School’s Entrance Examination last October. “I am delighted to welcome Isabelle as our first Fenton Scholar,” said Mr Williams. “For entry into Year 7 in September 2014, the Fenton Scholarship is again offered for the pupil(s) achieving the highest marks in our Entrance Examination on Saturday, 16th November. I am sure that we will see some more excellent results this year. As a registered charity, the School is committed to recognising the achievements and talents of individual children from all backgrounds and to enabling them to benefit from the School’s excellent academic, extra-curricular and pastoral provision.”

Out and about

There aren’t many places you could go to learn how to fly on a

broomstick. In fact, I can think of only one…the magical Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. It’s here that some of the iconic scenes

from Harry Potter were filmed. It’s also where Princes William and Harry visited in June 2013 for the wedding of Lady Melissa Percy, whose ancestral home is Alnwick Castle.

A group of us took a trip to Northumberland during the summer holidays – three mums and three kids. Every one of us had a fantastic time.

This sprawling, medieval castle is spectacular, yet even though it is over 700 years old it is still a family home. That of the Percy’s, known locally as the Royalty of the North.

Our first stop was to the Knight’s Quest – a courtyard area where tots to grandmas can dress up in medieval finery and have fun with traditional games and crafts. It really felt like we were stepping back in time. The children loved it, in particular Dragon’s Quest, a dragon’s lair of puzzles, challenges and a hall of mirrors.

A visit to the castle’s lavish state rooms was fascinating. Packed to the rafters with stunning art and furniture the rooms still held touches of the family home it is today with family photos dotted around.

The gardens are exquisite, an array of stunning flowers, plants and shrubs, gorgeous cafes and spectacular fountains.

The truth is, weather permitting, you could spend a full day in the gardens and a full day at the castle. We didn’t have time to fit everything in.

But the highlight of the day was, of course, broomstick training. Hilarious wizarding professors led the sessions on the very spot where Harry had his first flying lesson in the film production of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. And look at our photo – we mastered the art!

I have to say it’s not cheap to visit Alnwick Castle and its spectacular gardens - £26.25 for a ticket to the Castle and Gardens for an adult, £10.40 for 5-16 year olds (free for 0-4). It is slightly cheaper if you book online and you can choose to only go to the castle or the gardens, you don’t have to do both.

But don’t let the price put you off. Our day out was worth every penny and has given us lots of happy memories. We will definitely be visiting again!

Nationally, there is an acute shortage of adopters and a local

campaign has been launched in Calderdale to recruit more.

Calderdale Council has streamlined the way it recruits and assesses adoptive parents, reducing the expected average time it takes for someone from starting the assessment process to becoming an approved adopter to six months. During this time potential adopters will learn more about the rewards and challenges of adopting a child and will receive preparation and support from the Council’s adoption team.

Calderdale Council’s Leader, Cllr Tim Swift, said: “We want people who are able to make a difference to children’s lives and who wish to build or extend their own family to think positively about adoption.

“In Calderdale, at any one time we have approximately 40 children in need of a permanent, loving adoptive home and in recent years we have recruited and approved approximately 12 adoptive families each year. This means that many children need to be placed with families who live outside the area. Our aim is to treble that number to place more of our children with families in the local region

which will minimise the disruption for the child and also help us to more easily support the new family.

“We’re launching our new adoption campaign to attract more people who are thinking about committing to becoming adopters but who may in the past have been put off by lengthy timescales. We are working hard to make sure that when people do make an enquiry, the path to becoming an adoptive parent is more streamlined whilst also making sure they receive all the information and preparation they need to support them.

“We are very fortunate in Calderdale to have a large number of successful and committed adoptive parents, many of whom already support our recruitment process by talking to new potential adopters at our information evenings and at our ‘preparation training’.”

Calderdale Councils Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Megan Swift, said there was an urgent need to recruit more adoptive parents: “We have a significant number of young children each year who are unable to return to live with their birth families. For those children the very best option is for them to be placed in a permanent adoptive family who will care for them into adulthood and be there for

them throughout their lives. We know that the outcomes for children who are adopted are very good and that for many families adoption is a way of building their ‘hoped for’ family or for experienced parents to extend their family further.

“We work very hard to find the right adoptive family for all our children with an adoption plan, but due to a shortage of available families this often means placing children across the country. We hope to increase the number of families coming forward in Calderdale and our surrounding areas in order to place children more locally and for us to better support those families through our own adoption service.

“We have a very experienced adoption team who offer preparation training for all our adoptive families and work with them very closely throughout the assessment process and in considering the ‘right’ child for their family. We also offer ongoing support with finances and care where and when it is required, ranging from support groups through to therapeutic support where needed.”

Anyone who is interested in adoption should visit Adoption or contact the Council on 0845 245 6000

Now for many of you, that will conjure up images of a bespectacled, anorak-clad geek standing on a footbridge, scribbling down numbers in a battered old notebook on a drizzly Sunday morning.

I’m afraid my 10-year-old son, dressed in his trendy Vans and Pearl Jam t-shirt, doesn’t quite fit the bill, yet we’ve been visiting the NRM with him ever since he first excitedly babbled the words, ‘choo choo’ and illustrated his point by moving his arms round and round like the wheels of a runaway train.

Admittedly, at first it was his passion for Thomas the Tank Engine that would prompt our visits to the museum, which often plays host to the ever popular ‘Days Out With Thomas’ events, complete with steam engine rides and of course, the Fat Controller.

However, as he’s got older, he’s naturally become curious about the development of the railways from the first steam locomotives and Stephenson’s Rocket to the futuristic Japanese Bullet Train – an interest that has manifested itself in a collection of track and engines, currently housed under his bed.

For an introduction to this important mode of transport and its impact on Britain, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the NRM whatever the age of your children. Not only that, it’s a great place to visit on a wet and windy Autumn day, as the bulk of its exhibits

are indoors.

With more than 100 rail vehicles on site at any one time, there is lots to explore at the NRM. From the romance of one of the nation’s most famous steam engines, The Flying Scotsman, which is currently being restored at the museum, to the Mallard, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary of setting a new steam locomotive world speed record of 126mph – a record that still stands today.

From October 26, there will be a second chance to see all six of the surviving A4 locomotives around the turntable. The exhibition also includes the Mallard experience – a simulator ride that recreates the Mallard’s record breaking run.

Station Hall is home to the largest collection of royal carriages in the world including Queen Victoria’s opulent ‘palace on wheels’ and the Royal Saloon built for King George VI during the Second World War.

For the real enthusiast, The Works is well worth a visit – the museum’s workshop where engineers conserve and restore the historic locomotives, carriages and wagons. You can also track train movements on the East Coast Main Line using the museum’s signalling display, but the highlight for our children was watching the trains on the real railway from the viewing balcony overlooking York Station.

The museum, which is completely pushchair friendly, hosts a variety of family activities throughout the year including interactive science shows and storytelling

sessions for those under six-years-old. These take place at 11.30am and 3.30pm on weekends during term-time. If it is dry, younger children will also love the outdoor play area and miniature railway.

The museum boasts two cafés, one of which is outdoors, a restaurant and from September, a chance to experience afternoon tea in a traditional dining carriage – that may be one best kept for mums and dads when the grandparents have kindly volunteered to babysit!

Having visited all three, the selection and quality of food has always been best at the Dining Car Restaurant, which you will find in Station Hall.

It is completely free to visit the NRM, though donations are welcome, and it is open daily from 10am to 6pm apart from three days at Christmas.

Our youngest appears to be following in his older brother’s footsteps when it comes to his love of trains, so I anticipate many more visits to the museum in the coming years.

In fact, my husband said: “I’d love to spend a whole day there and have the time to read all the exhibition information.” Sadly, running after three very active children doesn’t always allow for such things – nevermind Gary, only another 18 years or so to go! Let’s hope the museum is safe from cuts and closure threats until then, it would be a sad day indeed if the nation lost such a valuable treasure.

wellies and heading outdoors withthe whole family in Autumn. Fountains Abbey is a place of discovery for little ones with a new adventure around every corner, whether it’s climbing among the 12th Century abbey ruins, using the many follies for a game of hide and seek, or skimming stones in the water garden created by John Aislabie. My three were quite content to roll down hills for an hour but if the park doesn’t tire them out, you can always head to the play area where there is enough to entertain children of all ages. Red, Sika and Fallow deer are all kept at the park, which provides a great opportunity for children to view these usually shy and timid animals. An array of children’s activities take place at the park throughout the year including everything from arts and crafts to outdoor theatre. Events to look out for this season include a family nature walk on October 5, ‘Make Like a Tree’ – a half term event on October 26 involving trails, a leafy challenge, and creating Autumnal artwork at Swanley Grange from leaves collected in the grounds, a geocaching taster day on October 30 and an opportunity to build a hibernation box for creepy crawlies between October 29 and October 31. On October 31 at the Studley tearoom, youngsters can join in the Halloween fun with a variety of seasonal games including apple bobbing, guess the weight of the pumpkin, how much candy is in the jar and of course, the obligatory fancy dress competition. A barbecue and Halloween themed food will also be available. The site is an historian’s paradise, so apart from the countryside, there’s plenty

Come October, when the weather turns colder and the sun hangs

lower in the sky, you may find the task of persuading the children to leave the comforting warmth of the indoors and the glare of the television more difficult than usual. But Autumn, with its hues of red, orange, brown and gold, is an amazing time to explore the natural world and there’s no place better to experience the season in all its colourful glory than at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden. Set amid 800 acres of breathtakingly beautiful countryside, the park, which became a designated World Heritage Site in 1986, boasts a Cistercian abbey, a Georgian water garden and a medieval deer park. There is much to see and do at the National Trust park, which is situated 12 miles north of Harrogate, but sometimes it’s the simple things in life that amuse children the most – at least, that’s what we discovered when we visited in mid-Autumn with our three. The children, aged 10, three and two enjoyed the picturesque walk from the courtyard, which houses a café, shop and other amenities, along the pushchair friendly route and down the fairly steep bank to the abbey. They spent hours happily kicking their way through the piles of freshly fallen leaves. As I looked on, I couldn’t help thinking there was something quite enchanting about watching the look of wonderment on our two-year-old daughter’s face as she delighted in throwing armfuls of the crunchy things into the air. The site is a magical place to visit at any time of the year but for me, there’s something very special aboutwrapping up warm, pulling on your Fountains Abbey &

for parents and grandparents to enjoy too including Fountains Hall, constructed by Stephen Proctor in 1597, St Mary’s Church, designed by William Burges and exhibitions in Fountains Mill and the Porter’s Lodge. Unless we’re very lucky, Autumn isn’t usually picnic weather so you can always head to Fountains Restaurant or one of the two tearooms on the estate to warm up, all of which sell a range of child-friendly food. The sit is open daily from 10am until 6pm though some of the amenities close earlier. The deer park is open from 7am but check the website for full details. Admission is free to National Trust and English Heritage members, otherwise adult admission is £8.60, children are £4.50 or a family ticket can be purchased for £21.80. We’ve visited Fountains Abbey many times. Each season brings with it a different view but I have to say as a quality family day out, I can’t fault it.

When choosing a nursery it’s really important that

both you and your child are comfortable and happy with the choice you make.

I always recommend that parents visit a number of different nurseries before making a final decision, that way you will realise which provision suits your family the best.

Remember your first impressions when you walk through the door. Were the staff friendly, relaxed, calm and confident? Was it clean, warm and welcoming? Was the equipment in a good state of repair?

Ask as many questions as you can think of. What sort of meals are provided and at what time? Are they freshly prepared on the premises? Are the menus changed regularly?

Take note if the children in the nursery look happy and well occupied. Is there a variety of play equipment for them to use and are the staff involved in their play? Can children take their own toys, such as their favourite teddy bear as a comforter?

Ask about children to staff children ratios and how the nursery ensures that children are cared for safely in the nursery and on outings.

Does the nursery have Early Years Professional Status (EYPS)? This is a leading status which was introduced in 2007 for leading excellent practice within settings. The status holds a variety of roles and responsibilities within Early Years, promoting excellent personal practice and the ability to lead and inspire colleagues.

Ask about First Aid procedures, guidelines state that one person in the building should be first aid trained, however I feel it’s beneficial to have as many staff as possible who are first aid trained and at least 50% of the practitioners here have completed first aid training.

Does the nursery have an Open Door policy so you can visit whenever you like to see your child - and go into their unit where they play - as well as being able to have a show round without making an appointment. When having a show round you should be expected to show some form of identification for

security and child protection reasons. Is the phone answered quickly? It is comforting for you to know that if you need to contact the nursery when your child is there that someone will be able to answer you promptly.

Ensure the nursery that you choose is registered with Ofsted. The Ofsted registration certificate should be displayed together with a current certificate of insurance. You should ask to see a copy of Ofsted’s most recent inspection report and this will also be available on the Ofsted website.

Parents should feel as happy to leave their child in nursery for a few hours or the day as they would with a trusted relative. So it’s important that the staff and management at your child’s nursery are always available to chat with you and discuss any comments.

For a full list of nurseries in your area visit your local Children’s Information Service.

What to Look For when Choosing a NurseryBy Joanne Bradbury-Wood, owner of Water’s Edge Children’s Day Nursery, Elland

West Yorkshire based opticians the Valli Group has teamed up with a Huddersfield chef to create a range

of ‘eye-healthy’ recipes.

The Valli Group, which runs six opticians practices in Calderdale and Huddersfield, has been working with award winning chef Ashley Coley, who runs the Huddersfield VegMan business, to put together a range of delicious dishes. The first recipe is Pan seared Salmon Fillet, Sweet Potato Rosti, Roast Pepper and Lime Sauce.

Moin Valli, Managing Director of the Valli Group, said: “Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss yet over half of these cases can be avoided so it is vital that you take care of your eyes. A lot of people don’t realise that specific ingredients can be extremely beneficial in maintaining good eye health.

“Food containing vitamins A, C and E; antioxidants and Omega 3 are essential for good eye health and can help protect against eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration. Kale, spinach, blueberries, oily fish, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli and of course carrots, are all excellent eye healthy produce.

“We’re delighted to have teamed up with Ashley for our range of eye healthy recipes. We’ll be handing out recipes cards to our patients and Ashley will be including them in the veg boxes that he delivers throughout the district.”

The number of people in the UK with sight loss is set to increase dramatically. It is predicted that by 2050 the number of people with sight loss in the UK will double to nearly four million. (1).

Moin added: “Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, yet many of us don’t know the best way to look after our eyes. This is why it is so important to get your eyes tested every two years even if you think your vision is fine as some eye conditions may not show symptoms.”

The Valli Group is an award winning, independent company run by Moin and his wife Rachel. They have six opticians’ practices in Honley, Lockwood, Almondbury, Meltham, Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge, along with optical businesses Valli Corporate Eye Care and Valli Home Eye Care, which specialises in providing domiciliary eye care services.
