Environmental Education in Italy

First steps • 1986 Ministry of Environment • 1997 Fiuggi’s Paper • 2000 Conferenza nazionale di Educazione Ambientale

International Engagement • 2003 WEEC • 2005-2014 DESS (Decennio dell’Educazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile) / UN

Decade of Education for SustainableDevelopment (2005-2014)

National effort • 2013 Network WEEC Italia

School • 2009 Linee guida per l’educazione ambientale e allo sviluppo sostenibile • 2015 Education to Sustainable Development

E-learning Mobile - learning IoT

“A new generation of learners is entering our educational institutions, one which has grown up with Information and Communication Technology as

an integral part of their everyday lives”

• Simulated situations to improve knowledge and attitudes • Virtual representation of natural environments not directly accessible

To bridge the gap between direct use and virtual use of the natural environment

It is estimated that in 2020 the IoT will reach 26 billion connected devices, an increase of 30 times with respect to the installed base in 2009.

Criteria

5

Hardware and software are fully based on open technologies

ACCESSIBILITY MODULARITY ENVIRONEMENTAL COMPATIBLITY

The system is constituted from time to time, according to the requirements and specifications of each application

When possible, all electronic devices are placed in recycled containers or made of wood

Our experience: A Scuola con lo Scatol8®

Educational workshop within a regional initiative

8 classes involved in 4 provinces: Biella, Novara, Torino , Vercelli

Environmental variables monitored: air temperature and humidity, amount of waste paper products, energy consumption

Verification activities with teachers in November 2014 —> Input for the Simulation model

#1 Baseline experiment

• Spread among school from the same educational institute • Adopting

interest threshold 50% • After 5 turn

16 schools apply

#2 Sponsor

• External sponsor impact • Adopting

interest threshold 50% for schools and 75% for sponsor • After 5 turn 27

schools apply 8th WEEC, Gothenburg, July 2, 2015

#3 Grapevine

• Baseline and "grapevine" • 8 new schools

each turn • interest

threshold 50% for schools and 75% for grapevine • After 5 turn 61

schools apply8th WEEC, Gothenburg, July 2, 2015

#4 = 1 + Internet

• Baseline and internet • 8 new schools

each turn • interest

threshold 50% for schools and 75% for internet • After 5 turn 45

schools apply8th WEEC, Gothenburg, July 2, 2015

#5 All together

• All the previous solutions together • 8 new schools for each channel

each turn • interest threshold 50% for schools

and 75% for others • 177 schools apply, mostly in the

Turin area

Implications, limitations, future developments

Internet • Spread as much as possible the lead through the internet,

to reach a high number of system potential users

Grapevine • Improve the initiative each year to support the

dissemination of positive testimonials

Sponsor • Engage the energies both in enlarging the network of new

contacts, both in presenting initiatives with previous positive experience support

School • Positive result, combined with the findings from the

previously presented questionnaires, about teachers’ availability to witness their experience, can help to focus efforts toward quality experiences in schools

education levels
