SNAPSHOTS – CHAMBER ACTIVTIES!

SAMBANDH-“ENGAGE, ELICIT and EXPERIENCE”

We welcome all women working within the Swedish companies in

India to SAMBANDH, a network within the network. Did you know

that SAMBANDH, commonly means “Connections, Relationships” in

both Hindi and Swedish so what name could be more fitting? The

vision is to create a place of exchange, learning, expansion of

thought, perspective and building strong connections across organi-

zations and fields of interest. The impact we are looking for is three-

fold; personal development and expansion, unleash catalytic power

in our own organizations and synergistic contribution on a communi-

ty/societal level.

On Oct 12, we met in Delhi for a breakfast meeting with Mridula Dixit

Lall, Office Manager Lindex India and Vice Chairperson of the

Chamber. She shared openly about her journey, vision as a leader

and how to combine different roles in a busy life. On Oct 20, it was

time for the Pune crowd to come together with Padmashree Lila

Poonawalla, Founder, Lila Poonawalla Foundation and honorary

board member of the Chamber. Lila told her tale with passion, inspir-

ing and provoking the group to think differently.

INTERACTION WITH MEHMET KAPLAN, MINISTER FOR HOUSING,

URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND ICT IN TOWN

On 15 October, the Chamber hosted an interaction with Mr.

Mehmet Kaplan, Minister for Housing, Urban Development and ICT

from the Government of Sweden in SCCI’s office in New Delhi. Minis-

ter Kaplan visited India to discuss cyber security and internet govern-

ance that are two burning topics at the moment, as the world be-

comes more connected. The visit also served as a kick off for the

joint working group for urban development in line with the MoU

signed between Sweden and India during the presidential visit in

early June. Business Sweden is spearheading the Smart City by Swe-

den- SymbioCity program, where we see great potential for Swedish

companies to contribute to a sustainable development of India’s

urban centers.

For the meeting hosted by the Chamber, SMEs were in focus and the

Minister and his delegation listened intently as SCCI members Nipun

Khanna, Konftel and Vijay Kannan, Blueair India shared their IRL ex-

periences about doing business in India. During the QnA session, the

minister was responding to questions on sustainability, trade and

strategic areas that Sweden is pursuing.

BUSINESS CLIMATE SURVEY: LABOUR LAWS

Labor laws and issues related to workforce such as skills and retention

are challenges that companies face as they do business in India. This

we know from the Business Climate Surveys from the last couple of

years. To penetrate this area further ,the Chamber together with the

rest of Team Sweden recently launched a series of interactions for

companies in Bangalore, Delhi and Pune with the purpose to discuss

in detail what the challenges are and how to work with these.

Yasmin Zaveri-Roy, Senior Advisor from Embassy of Sweden served as

subject expert in these meetings and also gave an overview of an-

nounced and planned reforms. Areas high-lighted by the companies

across the country are especially laws and regulations related to

women workforce, expats, contractual workers and also the need

for a uniform legal framework and compliance documentation. Do

PUNE: Maharashtra has been a hub for Swedish companies since early 1960 and more companies are coming in and establishing

manufacturing units in and around Pune especially. We recognized this by organizing a Nobel Dinner at the Westin, Pune, as part

of the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Week. The event on Oct 19 was hosted by Fredrika Ornbrant, Consul General of Sweden in

Mumbai, Torbjørn Holthe, Consul General of Norway and Parag Satpute, Managing Director of Sandvik Asia and Vice Chairperson

of the Chamber. The Norwegians have just opened up a Consulate General in Mumbai and we were happy they wanted to join

us for this occasion. The food was prepared by Nobel Chefs Mark Phoenix and Fredrik Forsell and they know what they are doing.

This week they prepared the exquisite dinner for the big Nobel Banquet in Stockholm on Dec 10.

More than a 100 diners joined us for our Nobel dinner and it was a great mix of people from Swedish and Norwegian companies

and their guests. Definitely a tradition to be continued!
