SCENE 2012-2013Hello My Future, Goodbye My Past
By Alexandra Arvai
The future is coming far too fast
Giving me questions I cannot answer yet
I am already missing my past.
When it comes to deciding, I have always been last
Others tell me to rush, but I never get it
The future is coming far too fast.
Sadly, the die have already been cast
The plans for my future ready and set
I am already missing my past.
What do I want I have never been as!ed
I would li!e to go bac!, have my life reset
The future is coming far too fast.
I loo! out to the world and it is so large, so vastOthers tell me not to worry, do not fret
I am already missing my past.
The rest of the world is "ust li!e a blast
#nd filled with people I have not yet met.
The future is coming far too fast.
I am already missing my past.

Trinity Vitreous Goldfnch
By: Nico Villereal
Trinity, Im back! shouted Trevor as he slammed the front door closed behind him.
He paused when he didnt hear an answer, or any other noise at all. He rowled,
throwin his stu down by the doorway before he stormed down the hall, lookin for
his sister. Trinity! he shouted aain.
Trevor "old#nch didnt look like a very neat person. He almost always wore sun
bleached and simple tee$shirts, alon with a worn pair of caro shorts. %ein the
cashier at the eneral store in the small town had its perks, a la& dress code bein
one of them. The other bein that you didnt have to particularly social withcustomers, as Trevor had never been a very patient person. 'ost of the people who
lived nearby could tell that much about him, which is why they never asked about
his life. (hy he lived in such a lare, empty house, alone, or even why they had
never seen his parents, thouh it seemed he had rown up in that house. It was a
beach house, with a retro eihties feel around it, the vinyl walls evident of that fact.
It was placed at the end of a windy road, which wiled its way throuh the sand
dunes like a wild snake. )ookin out the windows of the back of the house one could

see the beautiful deep blue waters of the reat "ulf of 'e&ico, the water didnt look
like water from up there, more so it looked like lass, the #nest and purist lass that
could be fored, thus was the water that made up the houses own little cove,
surrounded by tall rasses and sand dunes. %ut Trevor wasnt concernin himself
with the beautiful view that the window provided. Instead he concentrated on the
#ure sittin still on the beach, with her feet submered *ust below the water.
+ammit it Trinity! he muttered under his breath as he made a beeline for the back
stairs.
The irl on the beach was doin her best to en*oy her time by herself, even thouh
she didnt like bein alone. he did not have much of a choice, thouh, when it
came to bein alone. %ut she could at least en*oy the shallows when her brother
wasnt home. Today in particular she was thinkin about askin her brother to o
into town tomorrow. he knew he didnt like her oin out, but maybe if she
promised to wear sunlasses and love and a scarf with her hoody, than maybe he
would let o out and see some people. he was afraid to ask thouh, he didnt like itwhen she asked stupid -uestions. He also didnt like it when she went near the
water.
Trinity sihed, and remembered to save what courae she had for dinner, when she
would ask. The irl felt somethin tickle her hand on the beach. It was a tiny sand
crab, which had crawled over her palm. milin softly she lifted her hand slihtly.
Hello there little crab, I bet that you have some friends around here, dont you. ou
dont look very lonely. The crab was startled by the movement under its limbs, and
tried to attack Trinitys pinkie #ner. %ut it couldnt hurt her.
+ont take no for an answer, toniht, said a familiar voice to Trinity. It was hersister, )orelei .
I dont want to upset Trevor, said Trinity nervously. he knew how he could et
when he was upset, and so did )orelei.
ou dont deserve to be locked up in this place forever, muttered )orelei, ve&ed by
her sisters trepidation.
Its/for my own ood/ started Trinity.
0nd how do you know that, youve never left this beach, )orelei cut her o -uickly.
T1I2IT! shouted a loud and anry voice from behind her. The irl with her feet in
the water spun around, alarmed. "lancin around as she reali3ed she had stayed
out far too late, Trevor had cauht her sittin ne&t to the water.
Im sorry, Im sorry! Trinity said apoloetically, runnin back up the beach as fast
as she could.

Trevor lared with a scowl at his sister, starin at her for a suspenseful and an&ious
minute. Trinity rew fearful, was he oin to do somethin4
I thouht I told you to stay away from the water, he rowled, obviously irritated,
but thankfully not vehement. He turned around, not waitin for an answer. Im
havin diner. 2ow.
Trinity nodded obediently, and ran up the steps in front of her brother, so she could
make a meal for him. %ossy little twit, said )orelei, even more aitated than
before. Trevor didnt hear her.
5ventually it came to be that Trinity was starin at her brother as he ate the meal of
spahetti and arlic bread she had made for him by herself. 6ookin was a skill that
Trinity was rather proud of, considerin she never ate the food she prepared. %ut it
was one of the few thins that Trevor would ever thank and compliment her for.
Hey brother/. bean Trinity cautiously.
)orelei rolled her eyes. "et on with it, she ured. Trinity was rateful that Trevor
didnt see their sister.
(hat4 asked Trevor throuh a mouthful of noodles.
7m, I was wonderin/. he trailed o aain.
(hat is it4 asked Trevor more impatient this time.
Trinity summoned all the courae that she had saved up. /that if it isnt too much
trouble/if I could/maybe/sometime tomorrow/o into town..
Into town4 he acted like he hadnt heard her riht. he nodded.
Trevor dropped his fork onto his plate and crossed his arms.
Ill wear the sweatshirt and sunlasses, and a scarf and everythin, I promise. 2o
one will be even able to see my skin/and/.and I wont even talk to anyone, Ill *ust
be -uiet and watch/.please, she practically beed. %ut Trevors face didnt look
impressed at all.
ou had your feet in the water today.
Trinity didnt try to deny it.
ou didnt listen to me, and you put your feet in the water.
It *ust looked so beautiful/ she said.
eah, I bet it did. %ut you cant see stu like water when youre dead, he replied
simply.

His sister bowed her head in shame, knowin the truth in his words. However his
other sister would have none of it. 0nd what do you know about bein dead! she
shouted, but Trevor inored her.
"lass doesnt 8oat, Trinity. How many times do I have to say it! 0nd if you wont
listen to me now, how am I to e&pect you will listen to me out there! ou will etyourself killed, Trinity! I am tryin to protect you, +0''IT!! Trevor hit his closed #st
aainst the table, causin his plate to rattle. Trinity shuddered. )orelei lared.
%ut, Trevor, please. Its been three years, I *ust want one trip! she continued to
be, standin up from her chair.
9or *ust a moment, Trinity thouht she saw a dierent emotion 8ash across her
brothers face. 9or *ust a sinle second she thouht she had seen the hints of pity,
but they were one as soon as they had appeared. 2:. he said with #nality.
However, Trinity wouldnt relent. ;lease/ she whimpered.
The aner returned swiftly to Trevors eyes, and he stood up as well, knockin his
chair over. I said 2:! he shouted at her. He turned around, meanin to leave the
room. %ut Trinity rabbed his shoulder.
It all happened in a split second, in a sinle frame of a movin picture. To both of
the "old#nch siblins, it had seemed as a blur, that Trevor had whirled around, and
that he had struck Trinity with a clenched #st. he had fallen to the round, and
they both heard the crack.
Trevors eyes widened, and Trinity *ust looked shocked, that her brother had actually
hit her. lowly, Trinity drew back her thin white shirt, e&posin her collar. 0nd thereit was.
The hairline fracture. 0 sinle, thin, crack in the lass. They both knew that it would
never o away, Trinity didnt heal, for the same reason that she did not eat. he was
made of lass. 0nd she would carry this scar to her rave.
Trevor stared at her, his breathin raed. (ithout warnin he stormed away,
leavin Trinity there on the 8oor, he slammed the door to his room behind him.
If Trinity could have cried, she would have. %ut she couldnt cry, no matter how hard
she tried.
+id you *ust let him hit you! e&claimed )orelei, seeminly furious. He doesnt
have the riht to et away with that!
hut up, whispered Trinity, as she crawled her retreat, back to her own room.
2o, I wont, she replied insolently. Hes crossed a line.

Havin #nally made it into her room Trinity looked in her mirror. Trinity hated her
skin, she hated it, so, so much. It was reen, like natural lass, and was #lled with
imperfections. The shades diered around her body, but it didnt matter whether
liht, or dark, she hated all of the lass. It was this stupid skin that kept her from
leavin the house< it was this stupid body that would drown so easy. Her eyes, they
looked like marbles that school children would play with. Her riht one had threerins of color in it, one old, one blue, and one red. It was those stupid, unnatural
eyes that stared at her now. Trevor had been the only person she had ever met in
person, althouh wanted time she peered at the mailman from the upstairs window,
and she knew that/she was/not supposed to be. he had seen photoraphs, and
T=. If reular people did see her, they would most likely be disusted her, at least,
that was what she assumed, )orelei often disareed with the assumption.
The best that Trinity could tell, her dearest sister wasnt real. )orelei was *ust a
#ment of her imaination, *ust one of the parts that she couldnt control. 0nd
unlike herself, )orelei was not made of lass. he was human. 0nd so, Trinity
imained that instead of her face in the mirror there was )oreleis.
0nyplace is better than here, )orelei told her sister. Trinity didnt know what to
think. 0nd so she *ust sat there, in front of that mirror, for what must have been
hours. ;retendin that she could cry.
It must have been close midniht when Trevor knocked on her bedroom door. he
didnt say anythin, but he still came in, openin the door ently. He sihed when
he saw his little sister kneelin in front of the mirror. Trinity/ he bean.
he didnt say anythin.
I wanted to say that I was sorry.
/.
lowly, Trevor sat down, beside her. Is it alriht/if I tell the story, of the day you
were born.
)orelei didnt say anythin either. 0ll three of them knew the story. 5ven thouh
none of them liked to think about it. %ut they also felt that this tellin would prove
dierent that the others.
0 lon time ao, there was a irl named )orelei "old#nch. he and her brotherlived happily toether in a beautiful house by the ocean. 2ow )orelei was a very
adventurous irl, she loved walkin around the beach, and pickin up thins that
she shouldnt have, like crabs and *elly#sh. Her brother always told her that such
creatures and the ocean itself were rather danerous thins, he paused, but Trinity
didnt look away from the mirror. 0nd one day, as the irl was swimmin in the
ocean, somethin went wron/ Trinity watched *ealously as her brothers eyes
bean to water. 0nd/she drowned. Her brother had tried to save, tried to swim out

to her, but it was too late, and she was one. )eavin her brother all alone to bury
his own sisters body. o I did, bury her that is, I du, and I du, it took me the entire
day to di somethin ood enouh for her, and by the time I put her in, well, I had
run out of tears. I was alone, all alone in this house. I didnt sleep that niht, either, I
beed and I prayed to the universe to make it riht, to make so that maybe you
had listened to me, so that maybe I wouldnt be alone. I dont know why, but forsome reason, it seemed that the universe had decided to listen to me, for once, that
niht. There was a storm, a horrible tempest, sendin lihtnin from the heavens. I
saw it strike the rave, three times. 0nd the ne&t day, I found that )orelei was one,
and in her place was you, Trinity. I dont want to lose you like I did her. Trevor
ended his story with his words barely a meaer whisper, but Trinity could hear it *ust
as well. He didnt move, after he was done, he *ust sat there, waitin. 0s if he was
waitin for Trinitys foriveness.
0nd he waited for a lon time, as he was asleep by the time Trinity stood up. This
time )orelei didnt have to say a word as her youner sister picked up her sweat
*acket, a scarf, and a pair of sunlasses. he didnt even hesitate when she walked
out the front door, or so much as blink when her sister told her that she was proud.
he *ust kept walkin, down the old windy road in between the sand dunes. Trinity
=itreous "old#nch, the irl who was made out of lass, walked away from her
home, in the dead of niht.

There are a lot of misconceptions about draons. ome thins the stories et
riht>draons are bi< theyre covered in scales< they breathe #re and have
hue talons to snatch you up or slice you throuh< they can 8y< they live involcanos>but the one thin people always, alwaysscrew up is the simplest
fact.
+raons, contrary to popular belief, are note&tinct.
This one certainly isnt, anyway, the irl thouht with a 8ash of rim humor.
Thouh she hadnt spoken aloud>hadnt moved or made any noise at all>
the draons beady, briht red eye immediately locked onto her. (ith a roar
of rae ?which could be fairly attributed to the fact that it was no loner in
possession of the tip of its tail@ it swooped toward the irl, smoke pourin
from its nostrils as the wind blew in its face.
(ith a practiced arm and deadly speed, the irl drew back her arrow and let
it 8y. 0s e&pected, it landed cleanly in the draons eye, elicitin a bellow of
pain and fury, alon with an ad*ustment of its course. 0s it 8ew in the other
direction, the irl let loose another arrow, but the draon swerved, the arrow
bouncin harmlessly o its natural armor.
"rittin her teeth, the irl dropped nimbly from the tree, turnin at once to
shoot aain as she landed. This arrow sank into the soft 8esh of the draonsstomach ?one of its only weak spots@, but rather than stop its attack, the
in*ury only served to make the draon anrier.
It chared at her, spinnin at the last moment to strike her with its tail. ;ain
eruptin alon her left side, the irl crumpled to the round. he rabbed
frantically at her left arm, which had almost certainly been broken on impact.
Her bow landed beside her on the round, miraculously unscathed.
he rimaced in pain as the draon loomed over her, preparin for the kill.
he scrambled for an idea, anythin to et out of this alive, but found herselflackin any options. There was nothin else she could do. he still had her
-uiver, yes, but an arrow wasnt oin to kill a draon, only maim it.
(hat she needed was>was>
0s she closed her eyes and mentally crossed her #ners, the draon abruptly
yowled in anuish, reelin back from the irl. 0 small metal daer was

protrudin from his chest< not deep enouh to kill, but enouh for the
charmed metal to do its *ob. 9ire erupted from the draons mouth, and the
irl could feel the scorchin heat even from the distance now between them.
he struled to sit up, manain to recover her bow with her ood arm and
retreat back toward the trees.
Not like the bow or the treell be much help, she thouht. Cant shoot or
climb with a broken arm.
:nce she had put suAcient space between herself and the draon, she
looked back to watch what she knew would come ne&t.
0 boy had appeared, shirt covered in mud and hair slihtly sined. It had
been his knife that saved the irls life, and he faced the draon now with a
sword held loosely in his riht hand. The draon spran at him, rae and pain
8ashin in its ood eye. The boy reacted with lihtnin$fast re8e&es, slicintoward any part of the draon he could reach. 'ost of his blows were
de8ected by the draons scales, until his sword sliced deep into the
draons chest, the maic$infused steel ?one of the easiest ways to kill a
draon@ piercin its heart.
The draon made one last sound, almost a whimper, before fallin to the
round. It didnt move aain. 1elieved, the irl leaned aainst the tree,
cradlin her broken arm. Took you lon enouh. she called to the boy,
attemptin to shake her hair out of her face.
"ot a bit held up, the draons killer said, removin his sword from the
draon and comin to where his partner stood. %ut I made it!
he shot him a look, brushin o her torn *eans and shiftin around her
in*ured arm. It hurt, but it was already on its way to healin. he touched the
chain around her neck, imainin she could feel the maic emanatin from it
and puttin her body back toether.
'aybe one day youll show up on time and we can et a kill done -uick.
she said drily.
0w, cmon, the boy replied with a smile. (heres the fun in that4
The irl smiled, too, reachin out to take his hand. oure riht. illy me.
(hat could be better than ettin broken arms and three inches from burned
to a crisp three times a week4 2othin I can think of.

till, she said with a sih. Im ready to o home and rela& for a while.
7m, I hate to say it, the boy said, lancin o into the distance, where a

Mornin* -itual
By+ -ylie Ford
The smell of an old, bric! fire place with nice oa! logs burning in its hearth filled the
whole room. Gentle red and orange flames lic!ed at the blac!ening wood as it rested and
crumbled. The rest of the room received a nice orange glow from the fire, casting shadows as theflames danced. The room was meant for sleeping with a rug, vanity, bed and dressers. The cot
rested against the wall, opposite of the fireplace. Thic! wool blan!ets covered it, pale beige with
delicate !notted embroidery or dar! blues, reds, golds and greens. The dresser and vanity were of a fine design, leaves and vines edged into it. The wood
was dar!, mahogany and strong. *ou could clearly see the blac! fibers and tree wings in it as it
shined under the gloss coating. The vanity had a nice rounded mirror with a matching frame tothe rest of it. The mirror was polished, obviously well ta!en care of. On the vanity was thic!
blac! liquid, meant for painting your eyes. There was a tube of pin! paint for the lips, but it was
sealed tight and the tip still partly sharp, showing how little it was used. There was no powder for
chee!s or eyes to suggest and other beauty product. The vanity was at the foot of the bed, right infront of the door that was ad"acent to the door. =e%t to the door on the wall was one dresser,
matching in wood to the vanity. +i!e the vanity, the dresser had brass handles that curved
perfectly for a human hand. The other dresser was ne%t to the window, opposite of the first. On the wall with the fire place was a simple stool that had a pale yellow7tan wic!er
bas!et on it. Inside the bas!et was yarn along with !nitting needles. The yarn was assorted in
colors, from green to red to brown, beige and gold. owever, green too! up the ma"ority of thebas!et. The stool was placed at the edge of a rug that too! up the ma"ority of the empty floor
space, only the legs of the bed, vanity and one dresser was on top of it. The pattern on the rug
was similar to that of the blan!ets on the bed. It was wool and decorated with very detailed !nots
and circles.-espite a light on the ceiling of the room, the only thing lighting the room was the fire.
This low light prevented the many pictures on the wall from being seen easily. It also made it
hard to see the lump in the bed, covered in the wool blan!ets. It moved up and down slowly, showing that the person underneath was breathing steadily.
#s the person continued to sleep, the sun started to rise, sending slight rays through the
crac!s in the curtain that covered the window. The light fell on the door of the bedroom, shiningin front of the sleeping person's face. The person's nose twitched slightly and she turned over,
facing her nice dar! wall. (efore she could comfortable again, her door opened "ust a crac! and a
medium sied bird flew in.
The bird was a swallow, easily distinguishable by the for!ed tail. It flew to the curtainand pulled it open, flooding the room with sunlight. The person in the bed groaned as the sun
poured onto their face. They stood up, revealing them to be a girl. er hair spilled out, long curly
loc!s that went down to her butt were wrapped around each other. She stood up and her bare feetwiggled slightly on the soft carpet. She wal!ed to a dresser and, after promptly changing her
panties and bra she pulled on a large dull green sweater. It had a turtle nec! and sleeves that were
too long, and rested perfectly on her thighs, covering her panties. The girl wal!ed over to the vanity and sat in the cushioned stool in front of it. The bird
flew over and landed on the mirror edge. The girl smiled at herself in the mirror. The mirror
showed her baby face with wide eyes of a dull but vibrant green. Though the whites of her eyeswere a solid and dar! pin! where most peoples were white. This was a side effect of her magic.

er face had a few frec!les, a family trait among with her somewhat tannish s!in and
champagne pin! hair.
The girl smiled to herself. -espite what people told her, she truly loved the fact that shewas chubby. She adored her curves and shape. She was Taibhse, !nown as Ghosty to everyone
else. Ghosty too! a hold of the blac! in! and carefully painted it on her lashes, ma!ing them nice
and thic!. She glanced at the pin! lipstic! tube but shoo! her head8 this was not the day to wearit. She stood up and trotted to the door. The little swallow came over and landed on her head,
rustling into her curls.
Ghosty opened the door all the way and promptly e%ited the room. She closed it andwal!ed through the short hall to her !itchen. 9*ou need to stop opening my door.: She told the
swallow. 9I !now you got magic too, but I hate wa!ing up li!e that.:
The bird thrilled and flew off to the !itchen. It landed on the table where a small, steel
bowl was placed. Ghosty wal!ed over to a cabinet and opened it. Inside was a plastic bag full ofbid seed and food. She poured it into the bowl and went to find her own brea!fast. +i!e the d?cor
in her bedroom, the !itchen was made of dar! wood and brass handles. The stove was made of
bric! and the fridge was small and cute.
Ghosty found some bread and "am as well as cereal and mil! in her fridge. She happilyplaced them on the table and stated to eat her food. She spread the "am quic!ly on the bread,
happily biting into the sweet strawberry sauce. She poured mil! into a bowl and dumped thesweet sugar pellets. She too! a spoon and quic!ly ate it. Once both of them were done, Ghosty
