WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THERE IS FIRE! ORAL HEALTH
CONCERNS AND EVALI (E-CIGARETTE AND VAPE ASSOCIATED
LUNG DISORDER
Course Description:
Electronic nicotine delivery systems, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), or vapes first
gained popularity in 2004 as a conventional cigarette alternative. Emerging evidence
shows that they may not be less harmful after all. Given the potential oral health concerns
around smoking nicotine, marijuana and now E-cigarettes and vaping, all oral healthcare
practitioners need to know the pathophysiology, latest research, symptom recognition and
what EVALI treatment currently looks like – especially since the average age of these patients
is just 27 years old.
Join us to learn strategies to successfully identify these medically-complex patients and
ensure that all dental appointments are not just successful and safe for your patient, but also
for you and your staff.
Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the challenges and trends linking nicotine smoking, electronic cigarettes
and the deregulation of cannabinoids on oral health
• Describe the history of vaping related health concerns and EVALI
• Explain the role of vitamin E acetate in the EVALI outbreak
• Summarize CDC treatment recommendations for EVALI
• Learn to identify and be a better resource on vaping-related trends for your patients

DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING —
TRANSFORMING WORDS INTO ACTION
Sponsored by:
Course Description:
According to the US Census Bureau, in 2018, nearly 86 percent of practicing dental
hygienists were White or White Hispanic. Three percent were Black, six percent were Asian,
and two percent Non-White Hispanic. The underrepresentation of people of color in the
dental community challenges us to examine the roots of this marginalization on our way to
find real solutions to create change. Cultivating diversity, inclusion and belonging requires
a firm commitment to doing better, and to have the honest and difficult conversations that
are necessary to make change happen. Join our panel of industry professionals as they share
their journeys and present strategies to transform words into action in order to foster a sense
of belonging among individuals of all ethnicities and backgrounds.
Learning Objectives:
• Learn about diversity and inclusion initiatives within different dental health corporations
• Share strategies and successes of building and working with diverse teams
• Discuss actionable steps needed to become more inclusive
• Understand the positive impact a diverse professional organization can have on health
outcomes for minority groups in the community
