Descendants of John Philip Schmidt Generation 1 1. John Philip Schmidt-1[1] was born on Abt. 1815 in Wuerttemberg, Germany[1, 2]. He died on 17 Feb 1873 in Utica, NY[3]. He married Walburga (Mary) Fischer Schmidt on Bef. 1839 in Wuerttemberg, Germany. She was born on Abt. 1810 in Wuerttemberg, Germany[4]. She died on 16 Jun 1882 in Utica, NY[5]. Notes for John Philip Schmidt: John and his family were first discovered in the 1855 Deerfield Census which were taken June 28, 1855, which listed him as not naturalized and had been living in that city for 1/2 a year and he was a shoemaker. On the naturalization paper I found the witnesses to his naturalization were John Wolf of Rome, NY and Francis I. Dorn of Lee Center, NY. The Naturalization papers said he came from Wuerttemburg. He was living in Lee Center in 1860. He was next found in 1865 and 1870 in the Lewis Co. Census, Town of Lewis. The 1860 Census was business and agriculture only. In the 1870 Lewis county census it stated that John was unable to read or write, he was a naturalized US citizen and a Day Laborer. As far as I can tell John Philip Schmidt and Mary Walburga Schmidt came from Wurttemberg, Germany about 1852 with four children. The 1870 Census said Mary had had nine children. I have not been able to determine if they left children in Germany or not. The family story says that they had a three year old son who died during the crossing and was buried at sea. As the family story goes, there was a member of the family who had a stained glass factory in Germany. My great grandmother corresponded with the family in Germany and as the story goes, there was money for her if she could get to Germany to get it. She was not able to do that. Then more of the story says the factory was blown up during World War II. I have not been able to prove this story at this time. John and his wife Walburga must have left Lewis County between 1870 and 1873. John died in 1873 and was buried from St. Joseph's Church in Utica, NY. Descendants of John Philip Schmidt

Generation 1

1. John Philip Schmidt-1[1] was born on Abt. 1815 in Wuerttemberg, Germany[1, 2]. He died on 17 Feb

1873 in Utica, NY[3]. He married Walburga (Mary) Fischer Schmidt on Bef. 1839 in Wuerttemberg,

Germany. She was born on Abt. 1810 in Wuerttemberg, Germany[4]. She died on 16 Jun 1882 in

Utica, NY[5]. Notes for John Philip Schmidt: John and his family were first discovered in the 1855 Deerfield Census which were taken June 28,

1855, which listed him as not naturalized and had been living in that city for 1/2 a year and he was a

shoemaker.

On the naturalization paper I found the witnesses to his naturalization were John Wolf of Rome,

NY and Francis I. Dorn of Lee Center, NY. The Naturalization papers said he came from

Wuerttemburg. He was living in Lee Center in 1860.

He was next found in 1865 and 1870 in the Lewis Co. Census, Town of Lewis. The 1860 Census

was business and agriculture only. I was unable to find him in any of the 1860 Census. The family

came to America when Joseph was 16 months old which would be June 1852. Cornelia was born in

Oneida County in 1854.

In the 1870 Lewis county census it stated that John was unable to read or write, he was a

naturalized US citizen and a Day Laborer.

As far as I can tell John Philip Schmidt and Mary Walburga Schmidt came from Wurttemberg,

Germany about 1852 with four children. The 1870 Census said Mary had had nine children. I have

not been able to determine if they left children in Germany or not. The family story says that they had

a three year old son who died during the crossing and was buried at sea. As the family story goes,

there was a member of the family who had a stained glass factory in Germany. My great

grandmother corresponded with the family in Germany and as the story goes, there was money for

her if she could get to Germany to get it. She was not able to do that. Then more of the story says

the factory was blown up during World War II. I have not been able to prove this story at this time.

John and his wife Walburga must have left Lewis County between 1870 and 1873. John died in

1873 and was buried from St. Joseph's Church in Utica, NY.

In the 1880 Census, Christinia Roser said her parents were born in Baden and she was born in

Wuerttemberg.

Notes for Walburga (Mary) Fischer Schmidt: Sunday Tribune - Utica, NY - June 18, 1882 - Death Notices SCHMIDT: In Whitesboro, June 16, 1882, Mrs. Mary Schmidt, mother of Joseph and John J.

The 1870 Lewis Co. Census listed Mary as a Housekeeper and unable to read or write. Said she

had 9 children. In 1875 she was living with her son. John in the Town of Lewis, with no mention of

her husband. In the 1880 Census she was living with her son, John, in Utica, NY.
