Moonshot The students of Sunrise English Private School, Abu Dhabi were
privileged to participate in a conference on the Moonshot Initiative
held at the Grand Hyatt in Abu Dhabi on November 29, 2019.The
initiative aims to bring together key decision-makers from the
public and private sector alongside leading academics to discuss and
establish a robust framework for healthcare research in the UAE.
The students had the opportunity to engage with the panel and
discuss about the subjects. The plenary panel of discussion consisted
of:
1. The Right Honourable Stephen J. Harper (22nd Prime Minister
of Canada)
2. Hamad Abdullah Al Mehyas (Deputy Chief Executive officer)
3. Dr. Shamseer Vayalil (Chairman and Managing Director of VPS
Healthcare)
4. Dr. Ferid Murad (Nobel Laureate in Medicine)
5. Dr. Solomon Zewdu (Deputy Director of Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation)
The panel was invited onstage by the host and subsequently, Mr.
Stephen J. Harper commenced the discussion by briefing about
initiatives he laid a foundation to. The initiative that was aimed at
reducing child mortality was successful in preventing over 50,000
deaths. The funds they received were used to design and
manufacture drugs to help this cause.
Mr. Harper proceeded by asking Mr. Hamad Abdullah Al Mehyas
how UAE would tackle the predicaments caused by it’s aging
population succumbing to noncommunicable diseases caused by
unhealthy lifestyle and other factors. Mr. Hamad responded that an
acknowledgeable amount of research has been directed towards
SUNRISE ENGLISH PRIVATE SCHOOL,ABU DHABI

resolving the issue and that the focus on solving such an obstacle
would be to attract distinguished individuals to be a part of the
country’s growth and to have their renowned expertise.
The next question was directed to Dr. Solomen Zewdu regarding the
medical conditions in Africa. “Were the international and private
funds actually helpful to the country’s medical field?” questioned
Mr. Harper. Dr. Solomen confidently claims that the international
investments have benefitted the country and has delivered it’s cause
exceptionally well by helping the country achieve sustainable
development to an appreciable degree. “We can finally plan 20 years
ahead” says Dr. Solomen. He later raised his concerns about the
hardships brought to Africa due to it’s aging population.
On being asked how the new world should build to tackle rising
problems, Dr. Ferid Murad shares with the onlookers the story of
how he found his love for pharmacology at a very young age. Dr.
Murad suggests that the younger generations must be trained
adequately for a promising tomorrow.
Dr. Shamseer Vayalil states that the need for health care is
increasing and that a robust private sector must promote research
to make effective health care available to the public at a reasonable
price. Sustaining the topic, Mr. Harper asks Mr. Hamad about the
necessary innovations required to continue to deliver cost effective
care. “The usage of A.I. is key along with the information that we
have.” says Mr. Hamad.
“How do you (Dr. Shamseer) argue that the private sector could
provide health care at a lower cost overtime?”, asks Mr. Harper. Dr.
Shamseer responds by saying that he does not deny the interest of
businessmen in making some quick bucks. According to him, the
investments in opportunities is the key to cost effective health care.
Doing things fast is not sustainable, a stable economy requires
patience and must be built on trust and aligned incentives. “The
SUNRISE ENGLISH PRIVATE SCHOOL,ABU DHABI

current costs are horrendous and inappropriate. It should not cost
so much for people to receive health care. We are a capitalist
society. Our point of views must change for a better future.”, adds
Dr. Murad.
Dr. Shamseer concludes by commenting on the importance of
technology in the medical field. Technology has not modernized to
an extend where it is capable of replacing doctors but it can surely
enhance the performance of the experts. Mr. Harper proceeds to
give the vote of thanks and closes the discussion.
Thereafter the panel advances to have open discussions with the
guests attending the conference. The students were able to have
face-to-face conversations with Mr. Stephen J. Harper, Dr.
Shamseer Vayalil, Dr. Lynn Kirkpatrick, Dr. Peter Adams and
others. The students asked questions regarding their work and
research to which they responded whole heartedly and sincerely.
When one student asked how students can contribute to the cause,
Mr. Harper responded that they would have to become a medical
professional in order to help. Dr. Shamseer affirms that the pillars
of tomorrow are children and that they must come forth with new
ideas to assist our society. Dr. Lynn stated that the next generation
of doctors and scientists will consist of a larger number of women
working actively in these fields. The conference ended with students
enjoying a grand dinner with the panel and other renowned guests.
The discussions revealed that even the most developed countries in
the world are struggling to comprehend and resolve obstacles faced
in the medical field. In my opinion, I hope that such conferences and
discussions would help reach beneficial verdicts and judgements on
how to tackle such problems so as to benefit not only the developed
countries but to also help raise the societies of the underdeveloped
and developing countries to an equal extent through globalization.
