Academic CompetitionsMichaelmas 2010Harry Heath and Niall Hegarty represented the School in the Housman Society’s annual Poetry Recital competition. Harry was praised for his rendition and Niall was runner-up in his age group.

Lent 2011The following pupils were selected for publication by the Young Writers association:Richard Armstrong, Sam Bellamy, Harry Broom, Ryan Byrne, Rob Chapman, Hugo Evans, Nikol Grigorova, Alex Griffiths, Poppy Jones, Matthew Jones, Ellie Kerr, Meggie Mills, Ben Phillips, Sophie Swatkins, Rosie Thompson, Yash Shangavi, George Stone, Sofya Syskova, Uchan Thapa, Becky Woodward-Smith.

Chi Fan Leung entered the Physics Olympiad, won the Gold Award and was in the top 50 in the country.

140 pupils enrolled in the IFS School of Finance Student Investor Challenge. Two teams performed particularly well: ‘SCH Investors’ and ‘Oweeee’. Both teams reached the top 50 of the National League, out of 7460 teams, and SCH Investors qualified for the regional final.

The SCH Investors team of Chris Dodd, Matt Drane, Lewis Martins and Alex Thorpe were crowned Regional Winners in the Final of the IFS Student Investor Challenge, with the highest score of all the regional finals that have taken place. The team went forward to the National Final, competing against seven other teams from across the country. The competition started with 7460 teams.

Summer 2011Starpack Industry Awards (recognising innovation in packaging design and technology): Bromsgrove won the overall award for Best School.Highly Commended – George Goucher, Bethan Luckman, Ben Thornley. Bronze Award - Tom Von Malachowski, Patrick Prasertsri, Sam Rose who also won the Packaging Society’s sponsored award for the best portfolio. Silver Award - George Goucher, James Simpson Stern. Gold - one of only five in the country this year - awarded to Tara Thorpe.

National Final Winner of the Business, Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) 2011. Team members were William Sarjant, Nicholas Garvie, Emma Sellers, Harriet Jones, Lydia Cotton and Josh Hutchings.

Stella Tsui and Chi Fan Leung had work published in Physics Education.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

CCFMichaelmas 2010Members of the CCF were invited to Buckingham Palace to celebrate Cadet 150. Ted Beale attended as a finalist for the Duke of Westminster’s Award.

At the Inter-Contingent Wyvern Trophy Competition, Bromsgrove cadets were awarded 2nd place for Turnout and Room Inspections; 3rd in the Air Rifle Shooting; 2nd in the Drill and 2nd in the Military Knowledge, meaning a combined total of 24 indi-vidual medals.

In the 143 (West Midlands) Brigade Orienteering Championships the girls were placed 2nd in their category. The following individuals were also com-mended for their conduct and participation: Caroline Hewitt (Team Captain), Esme Dyson, Faye Powell, Elizabeth Stone, James Lay, Jason Birtle, Chris Foster, Ben Hesketh, Philip Rowsell, Igor Shcherbak and Ivan Taptygin.

CCF trumpeters James Mayhew and William Parkinson played at the Remembrance Services here at School, in the High Street, at St. John’s Church and at the Burma Star Memorial.

Senior Boys, Senior Girls, Junior Boys and Junior Girls from the CCF entered into the National Cadet Orienteering Championships. Both girls’ teams were runners-up and all were awarded medals.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

CCFMichaelmas 2010Group Captain John Rogers (RAF R’td) was the Reviewing Officer at the CCF Passing Out Parade. Best Recruit was awarded to Elizabeth Stone, Best RAF Recruit awarded to Philip Rowsell and Best Senior Recruit Maxim Kolesnikov. The Sir David Haslam Trophy for Best Platoon was won by the Staffordshires commanded by George Smallman.

Lent 2011Awarded the British Red Cross ‘Save a Life’ certificate: Cadets Oliver Stone, Aleksandar Babic, James Hanna, William Bedford-Russell, George Toft, James Gillick, James Lay and Yavor Dimitrov.

CharitiesMichaelmas 2010Sam and Katie Leather cycled 951 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats for the ‘Grassroots’ charity.

Ben and Alex Walker ran for the charity ‘Promise Dreams’. Alex came 1st and Ben 2nd in the U16s in a field of 320 runners. Alex Walker also won the annual Pattingham Bells Run (Junior) and helped raise money for the West Midlands Air Ambulance and local church restoration funds.

At the Remembrance Services the School raised £700 for the Royal British Legion.

The School has raised money this term for Cancer Research, Chlldren in Need and the Make a Wish Foundation this term. There have been Own Clothes Days, an Advent Service, a mixed charity netball tournament and Housman Hall held their own ‘Dining-in’ event.

Summer 2011A Charity Fashion show was held by IB students to raise money for Operation Smile.

Ten Housman Hall pupils, along with Mr Jones and Mr George took part in a challenging 10k Fun Run and raised £600 for Leukaemia Research.

DebatingMichaelmas 2010Sarah Westlake and Declan Amphlett reached the semi-final of the Taylor Trophy.

Adam Robertson, Nowrin Hossain and Lucinda Hegarty won the Rotary Club of North Worcestershire Annual Michael Holt Memorial Debate.

Lent 2011Pupils spent a day in the Birmingham Council Chamber debating European Politics in the Midlands Sessions of the European Youth Parliament.

National Finals of the European Youth Parliament at Durham University: Dominic Calvert, Hamish Docherty, Adam Robertson, Polly Fletcher, Lizzie Leather, Harry Heath, Jonathan Turner and Lewis Martins.

Will Sarjant and Henry Morris represented Bromsgrove School in the Three Counties Debating Competition at Malvern College, competing against schools from all three neighbouring counties. They performed exceptionally well and won all of their debates in the first three rounds, coming in as the highest ranking across the schools. In the Finals, they were narrowly defeated, taking second place.

Will Sarjant won the Best Speaker Award for scoring the highest individual results, and for the consistent quality of his speeches. Henry Morris came in second, with only one mark in it for the top spot. Henry Morris and Will Sarjant also continued their winning ways at the Bromsgrove Conservative Association Schools Debating Competition.

Summer 2011The European Youth Parliament team will represent the UK in Croatia at the International Sessions after winning the National Finals against the thirteen other regional representatives.

Horse Riding & Show JumpingMichaelmas 2010Harry Eaves and Henrietta Horsley-Gubbins qualified for the ‘Horse of the Year Show’.

Show Jumper Harry Eaves had his photograph featured in ‘Horse and Hound’ magazine.

Lent 2011Harry Eaves travelled to Aintree and finished in the top ten for Show Jumping.

Hot Air BallooningMichaelmas 2010Alistair Hey and Polly Geddes took part in the National Hot Air Ballooning Championships.

Jamie Hey and Jonathan Fleury were part of the ground crew at a Hot Air Ballooning competiton in Bedfordshire.

Kielder ChallengeMichaelmas 2010The Bromsgrove District Kielder Challege took place at Bromsgrove, aiming to increase the opportunities for special needs children to participate in team-building exercises and to interact with able-bodied children.

Summer 2011Niall Hegarty, Matthew Harker, Emily Collie and Eleanor Ball joined up with 3 pupils from Rigby Hall Special School to compete in the first round of the Fieldfare Kielder Challenge.

Mount KilimanjaroMichaelmas 2010George Davies climed Mt Kilimanjaro over 8 days and Victoria Borton joined 94 corporate trekkers who were raising money for Help the Heroes, Children with Leukaemia, Cancer Research UK and the Afri-can Rainforest.

TaekwondoLent 2011David Able-Thomas gained a yellow stripe and Jonathan Hunt a yellow tag belt. Jonathan was also credited with an A Pass Grade.

Young EnterpriseLent 2011‘Magic 17’ were awarded the ‘Young Enterprise Mystery Shopper Customer Service Award’.

Lent 2011The cast of ‘Northern Lights’ and the cast of ‘Dr Horrible’s Singalong Blog’ took part in the All-England Theatre Festival.

The casts of ‘Northern Lights’ and ‘Dr Horrible’s Singalong Blog’ took part in the ‘Birmingham Festival of Acting and Musical Entertainment’ (BFAME). The Company of ‘Northern Lights’ was highly praised by the judges. Several trophies were won – for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Youth Drama’;

Niall Hegarty for Outstanding Male Performer for his performance as The Master and Lee Scoresby andTodd Cross-Watson received a Certificate of Merit for his Fra Pavel. Fran Kingston shone in the Individual Category winning the ‘Outstanding Individual Singer’ award with her version of ‘On My Own’ from ‘Les Misérables’. Bromsgrove was the only School taking part in the competition.

Lucy Sapwell auditioned for the National Youth Choir.

Summer 2011James Lay, Robert Lay and James Mayhew played with the Worcestershire Youth Orchestra at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

Francesca Kingston performed at a charity event in aid of ‘Cure Leukaemia’ and ‘Wooden Spoon’ which raised £2000.

AthleticsSummer 2011 - Team AchievementsThe Senior Girls’ team won the Midlands’ Finals and competed at the National Track and Field Athletics Championships placing 9th in the country out of a total of 800 schools that had entered the competition.

Summer 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursAt the National Track and Field Championships the following secured enough points to attain an individual gold award badge: Pascale Massey (200m and Triple Jump), Rachel Elt (100m and Shot Put), Poppy Jones (800m and Discus), Tara Thorpe (300m and High Jump).

CricketMichaelmas 2010 – Team Achievements1st XI awarded the 40 Club Trophy.

Lent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursWilliam Bowen selected for the Worcestershire U17s.

Matthew Harker and Alex Wilkinson selected for the Worcestershire U14s.

Brett Huxley selected for the Worcestershire U14s, U15s and U16s.

Mannan Nawaz selected for the Worcestershire Academy.

Cross CountryMichaelmas 2010 - Team AchievementsThe Intermediate girls and boys team competed in the 1st round of the English Schools’ Cross Country Cup. The boys came 3rd and qualified for the regional round. The girls won overall and also qualified for the regional round.

The intermediate girls and boys competed in the Cross Country Regional Finals. Overall the girls’ team were placed 4th.

The junior and inter teams competed in the District Cross-Country Championships. Both the junior girls and the inter girls won team gold.

In the 1st round of the English Schools’ Cross County Cup Jamie Ross and Ben Walker ran well finishing 5th and 8th respectively. The girls also performed well: Poppy Jones (1st), Hannah Trow (2nd), Tara Thorpe (4th), Ellie Ball (11th), Millie Doherty (12th) and Emma Lloyd-Jones (13th).

In the Cross Country Regional Finals, Poppy Jones achieved 3rd place, Hannah Trow 8th, Eleanor Ball 27th and Pascale Massey 30th.

At the District Cross-Country Championships the junior girls consisted of Poppy Jones 1st, Eleanor Ball 6th, Millie Doherty 7th and Frederica Robbins 8th. The junior boys raced well with Ben Walker 1st, Jamie Ross 3rd and Gregoire Lambert 7th. The inter girls dominated their age group with Lydia Trow 1st, Alice Smith 3rd, Laura Matthews 4th and Lauren Townsend 10th and the inter boys team of Ross Johnston 1st, Armand Lambert 3rd and Alex Moore 5th.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsIn the King Henry VIII relays the girls’ team finished 4th out of 35 teams. Becky Straw clocked the fastest lap of the competition with a time of 13.05 minutes. The boys finished 24th out of 55 teams.

Lent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursBecky Straw and Hannah Trow represented Hereford and Worcestershire in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Hannah ran well against girls in an older age group and Becky finished 6th and was selected to represent England in the Home Nations Championships.

At the Worcestershire Cross Country Championships. Becky Straw came 2nd in the U17s and won silver, Lydia Trow came 9th and the team overall won Bronze.

Becky Straw competed in the Midlands Cross Country Championships winning the U17 Women’s category and finishing 3rd overall in the U20s. At the UK Inter-Counties Cross Country 46 counties competed and in the U17 women’s race Becky finished 7th. Becky also represented at England U17 level.

FencingLent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursMatthew Lynch took part in the West Midlands Age Group Epee competition finishing 5th in the U16s.

FootballLent 2011 – Team AchievementsLuke Sparrow and Alex McGarry were selected by opposition 1st XI coaches to be Bromsgrove’s representatives in the Mercian North squad.

1st XI - LB cup Semi-Finals

1st XI – Crowned Champions of the Mercian League after an undefeated season.

Lent 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursWilliam Packwood offered a professional contract at Birmingham City Football Club.

HockeyMichaelmas 2010 - Team AchievementsU18 boys finished 2nd at the Midlands’ U18 indoor finals and proceeded to the Nationals.

U18 girls’ hockey team finished 3rd at the Midlands’ U18 indoor finals.

U16 girls’ team won the outdoor zonal round and were runners up in the Midlands Finals. They subsequently qualified for the National Finals.

Michaelmas 2010 – Individual Representative HonoursPascale Massey and Ellen Lockhart selected for the Mercia Lynx Training Squad. Ellen was also selected for England U16 trials and had two selection days for the Futures Cup.

Todd Dudley selected for the Mercia Lynx U17s.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsBoys’ U14, U16 and U18 - County Champions.

Boys’ U18 3rd place in the Kappa Cup in Germany.

Boys’ U18 National Outdoor Finals and National Indoor Finals. This is the only boys’ team in Bromsgrove’s history to qualify for both the Outdoor and Indoor Finals.

Girls’ U14, U16 and U18 - County Champions.

Girls’ U16 National Outdoor Finals.

Lent 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursRachel Clare - Wales U16 hockey.

Ellen Lockhart - England U16 hockey.

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursRachel Clare played goalkeeper for Wales U16s against Scotland.

Zachary Morris, Jack Robinson, James Ross and Thomas Stokes chosen to represent theMidlands’ regional hockey squad.

Ellen Lockhart selected to represent England against Germany.

HorseridingSummer 2011 – Team AchievementsThe School riding team debuted at the National Schools’ 2 day event. Vanessa Hill, Faye Powell, John Smith-Maxwell, Gabrielle Rose and Sam Rose finished 12th out of 20 teams.

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursHenrietta Horsley-Gubbins won at the Staffordshire County Show and was reserve champion at the Midland Counties Show and has again qualified for the Horse Of The Year Show at the NEC.

NetballMichaelmas 2010 - Team AchievementsU19 netball team competed in the County Tourna-ment and reached the semi-final stage.

U16s were victorious in the District Tournament (1st round of the Nationals).

U14s became County Champions, through to West Midlands final.

NetballLent 2011 - Team AchievementsU16 - West Midlands Champions. Runners up at the National Finals.

U14 - Represented Worcestershire in the West Midlands’ Netball Finals.

Lent 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursKaya Wilson chosen to represent England U17 netball.

RugbyMichaelmas 2010 - Individual Representative HonoursRyan Gordon, Hugh McBride, Damion Poole, George Beale, Dan Skinner, Hugh Lockhart, Dan Young and Sam Waltier chosen to represent Worcestershire U18s, the North Midlands’ U18 and Midlands U18 training squad.

James Widdop, Miles Martins, and Joshua Watkins chosen to represent both the Worcestershire U18s and the North Midlands’ U18 squad. Joe Wilkinson has also been chosen to represent the Worcestershire U18s. Tom Griffiths and Barnaby Woods chosen for Her-efordshire U18s, North Midlands’ U18 and Midlands U18 training squad. Jack Fletcher has also been chosen for the North Midlands’ U18 squad.

Barnaby Woods, Tom Knowles, Jack Fletcher and Jack Bruten chosen for Herefordshire U18s.

Brett Huxley chosen to represent Worcestershire U16s. Louis Preira, George Blaxall and Tom Gretton chosen to represent Worcestershire U16s and the North Midlands U16 squad.

Will Hunt chosen to represent Greater Birmingham U16s.

Elliot Davies chosen for Herefordshire U16s, North Midlands U16 and Midlands U16 training squad.

Chris Johnson played for the Abu Dhabi Harlequins U18s in the Dubai 7s; his team went on to win the Plate Competition.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsThe oldest Rugby fixture is played annually betweenBromsgrove and KES. In Lent 2011 Bromsgrove retained the Siviter-Smith Trophy.

U16 Boys’ - Won the Midlands North plate.

The Boys’ 1st team reached the finals of the North of England 7’s Competition. Jack Philp was top try scorer of the tournament with 9 and Sam Waltier received the trophy for best player of the tournament.

Lent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursElliot Davies selected for the Midlands U16s to play in the Divisional Festivals.

Hugh McBride, Hugh Lockhart and Damon Poole selected for the England U18 squad.

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursHarry Broom, Ben Tibbetts and Ben Philips selected for the U15 County.

SwimmingMichaelmas 2010 - Team AchievementsThe School team competed in the English Schools National Qualifiers.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsIn the Warwick 100’s Emma Lloyd-Jones, Jan Carius, Dan Ruckwood, Bethan Luckman, Jack Slattery, Victoria Stokes, Rebecca Straw, Sophie Haycock-Jones and the U16 Girls’ freestyle relay team all secured gold medals.

In addition, Bromsgrove obtained 7 silver medals and 10 bronze with several school records being broken in the process.

At the Bath and Otter Relays the Boys’ team consisting of Dan Ruckwood, Jack Slattery, Jan Carius and Stefan Squire competed in the Medley Relay and were crowned Champions.

Lent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursDan Ruckwood qualified for the world championship trials in the men’s 200m backstroke.

Summer 2011 - Team AchievementsAt the Stowe Invitational relays the boys and girls swimming squads picked up medals in every event. The U14 boys’ team, U16 girls’ team and U18 girls’ team in the freestyle relays won gold. Five silver and two bronze medals were also won.

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursThree pupils from the Senior School, Dan Ruckwood, Jack Slattery and Sophie Haycock-Jones (plus Prep School pupil Jack Weston), were chosen to participate in the Worcester County World Record attempt for the fastest ever 100 x 100m relay. The team now hold the 100x100m Freestyle World Record (1 hour 43 minutes and 53 seconds), breaking it by over 9 minutes.

A LEVEL RESULTS 2011

86.3% of Bromsgrove’s 158 A level candidates achieved A* to B in their examinations.

538 A levels were taken, the pass rate was 100% and the average UCAS score was 460 points per pupil.

60% of all A levels were achieved at A and A*, 21% at A*.

43% of pupils achieved 3 or more A and A* grades.

30 pupils achieved 4 or more A and A* grades.

Bromsgrove School once again recorded stunning A level results with some large departments such as Maths and Physics registering 80% A and A* grades.

Harriet Alford achieved seven A levels at A and A*, easily securing her Cambridge place; both Heads of School, Georgina Eales and Hugh Lockhart, scored straight As and A*s, while Birmingham City Under 18 Captain and USA Youth World Cup player, Will Packwood, also achieved straight As and A*s.

Nico Fessner, had more than most to celebrate. A mountain bike accident last year had him fighting for his life, but he recovered, bravely returned to Bromsgrove in January and secured three A*s and a B, which will enable him to attend Imperial College London.

Academic CompetitionsMichaelmas 2010The Prep School entered the Young Writers’ Competition and many pupils had a poem published for their latest competition entitled ‘Poetry Express’.

Thomas Lynch represented the Preparatory School in the Housman Verse Competition and came 2nd in the middle schools age category.

Lent 2011Beck Cutting, Oliver Hall, Katy Miller and Paige Cocoran took part in the National Spelling Bee Competition run by The Times newspaper.

Bromsgrove Preparatory School took part in The Douglas Buchanan Year 6 Maths Challenge. Altay Gardiner and Emma Pickering, scored a massive 203 points overall, coming first inThe Big Event section, while Max Butterfield and Matthew Coulson, scored 190 points overall, coming first in the Mental Arithmetic section. When all the points were totalled for all three sections, Bromsgrove Prep School finished fourth overall.

Liam Holland-Bunch was selected to take part in the National Finals of The Primary Maths Challenge, only just missing the Bronze Medal by a very narrow two point margin. This result positioned Liam well within the top 500 pupils out of 100,000 entrants.

Summer 2011In the Junior Poetry Competition Max Campbell was selected as the overall winner, followed by Josh Osborn-Patel and Millie Courtney in Year 4 and Thomas Holroyd and Zef Ruben in Year 3.

Thomas Lynch has been successful in getting to the finals of the UKMC (United Kingdom Mathematics Challenge). From 230,000 entries he made it into the last 1200 finalists.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

CharitiesMichaelmas 2010The School participated in Operation Christmas Child, donating gifts to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia and also raised money for the BBC Children in Need Appeal with an Own Clothes Day.

KarateSummer 2011Daniel Webber-Goldsby passed his Black Belt grading, he is now officially a 1st Dan Junior Black Belt.

Ballet Lent 2011Gaining a merit or distinction in their ballet exams were Sophie Burden, Olivia Burden, Lucia Goodwin, Olivia Dalby.

Maisie Butler was selected for a part in the 2012 Sleeping Beauty Ballet production at the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. Over 250 children auditioned from all over the UK and only 15 were selected for this prestigious production which is being run by the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Summer 2011Maisie Butler and Daisy Scott received their Grade 3 RAD exam certificates, both achieving High Merits. Maisie has also just been accepted into the Royal Ballet School (Junior Associates).

YouthpactMichaelmas 2010Year 8 Youthpact members Tom Ford, Clare Hill, Hemlata Limbu, Sam Makar, Dylan Longden, Will Edwards, Harry Ferguson and Medhi Khajavi secured an award of £500 to establish a community project.

Addtional Music and Drama HighlightsMichaelmas 2010Katie Moore and Archie Parker selected as Head Choristers.

The Prep Choir took part in a Royal Schools of Church Music Service. Katie Moore represented the School with a reading. The Choir also performed at the Victorian Fayre in Worcester.

Year 5 pupils performed at the LG Arena.

Summer 2011Jacob Mann performed in the Carmina Burana Opera at Birmingham Symphony Hall for the Birmingham Music Services.

Luke Alcock regularly sings with Ex-Cathedra.

AthleticsSummer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursLauren Brown is ranked 5th in the UK after running 12 seconds dead at Midland Premier Young Athletes competition.

Henry Walker, Joe Morrice and Cooper Bent represented Herefordshire and Worcestershire at the Mason Trophy Athletics match. Henry and Joe were selected to represent the county at the English School’s Championships; the first pupils from the Prep School to ever achieve this honour.

At the District Athletics Competition there were a number of individual medallists: Abi Saker 1st in the 800m, Ellie Childs 2nd in the 800m and 2nd in Long Jump, Charlotte Campbell 3rd in the 75m final, Talia Mitchell 2nd in High Jump, Highbury Rodway 1st in the 75m Hurdles, Megan Longden 2nd in the 75m Hurdles, Elouise Brookes 1st in Discus, Claudia Moberley, 3rd in Discus. In Year 5: Molly Trow 1st in the 600m, Ella Gardner 2nd in the 150m, Elyssa Jones 1st in the 75m final, Scarlett Fender 2nd in the 75m final and 1st in Long Jump, Emily Gieron 1st in High Jump and Molly Trow 3rd in Long Jump.

In the Regional A final in the English Schools Athletics Cup many girls gained personal best performances: Liza Welch 2nd in the 200m, Imogen Sapstead 3rd in the 200m, Sarah Ellis 3rd in the 1500m, Alycia Natress 3rd in the 75m hurdles and Lauren Brown 1st in her race in a time of 13.2 secs. Lauren performed extremely well as she was only in Year 7, compared to most who were Year 8.

The boys also performed well amassing an impressive points score: Joe Morrice (52 points), Cooper Bent (45 points), Alex Nisbet (45 points), David Elphinston (41 points), Jonty Thornton (40 points), James Taylor (38 points), Harry Ferguson (37 points), Harry Lloyd Jones (37 points), Henry Walker (34.5 points), Fraser Foster (32 points), Tom Trow (26 points), Tom Ford (21.5 points), Charlie Kendrick (21.5 points), Alex Cooper (20.5 points).

Six of our leading Year 8 boy athletes took part in the annual Herefordshire and Worcestershire county track and field championships at Nunnery Wood Sports Centre, Worcester. Henry Walker became the first boy in the last ten years to win an event when he took gold medal in the javelin with a throw of 41.14 metres to break his own School record. This performance is worth more points on the ESAA points table than any School record. Joe Morrice achieved a silver medal in the 80 metres Hurdles and bronze in the triple jump and Cooper Bent came second in the 200 metres, only missing gold by a tenth of a second (he also came 4th in the 100 metres). Following these performances Henry, Joe and Cooper were chosen to represent the county at the prestigious Mason Trophy at the Alexander Stadium. Our other athletes who performed very well on the day were, Charlie Kendrick 1500 metres, David Elphinston high jump and Harry Ferguson shot put.

At the IAPS Regional Round Athletics Championships Lauren Brown yet again beat her own School record in the 70m hurdles both in the heats and the final and became Regional Champion, securing a place in the National Final.

Abigail Saker also achieved a National Final place, coming 1st in the U12 1500m with a time of 5.23 minutes and Eleanor Childs coming 2nd with a time of 5.45 minutes. Sarah Ellis qualified as an U14 girl in the 1500m and Liza Welch came 1st in the javelin with a throw of 23.40m. Alycia Nattress also won her heat in the 100m, and then came second in the final, qualifying for a place in the National finals in a time of 13.32 seconds.

AthleticsSummer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursAlso competing at the IAPS Regional Round (and coming in 3rd place) were Isabelle Murphy in the Long Jump, Elouise Brookes in the Javelin, Anastasia Brantingham in Javelin, Liza Welch in the 200m final and Lauren Brown in the High Jump.

For the boys, Cooper Bent broke the longest standing track record, running the 100m in 11.89. Cooper followed this up by also winning the 200 metres. Joe Morrice also won two individual events in the long and triple jumps. Joe broke the long jump record with a jump of 5.43 metres and once more had a mammoth triple jump. David Elphinston won the high jump with 1.60 metres and came second in the 400 metres, Alex Nisbet won the 400 metres and came third in the javelin with Henry Walker second, James Taylor won the 800 metres and came second in the triple jump, Jonty Thornton came second in the 75 metres hurdles. Harry Ferguson came third in both the shot put and 200 metres. Narcis Badea also qualified for the National Final. Alex Drew came third in the 800 metres and Callum Stirrat third in the long jump. Oliver Fender ran the fastest time by a Year 7 boy this year over both 100 metres and 200 metres. Kieran Walker recorded a new personal best in the 1500 metres and finished fourth.

Our best two performances at the IAPS Regional Round in Year 6 came from Tristan Bland who came 2nd in the javelin and Harry Pugh just missing the school record in the 70 metres hurdles by two hundredths of a second.

At the IAPS Athletics National Finals Year 6 pupils Eleanor Childs and Abigail Saker competed in the 1500m in their first major athletics final, coming 3rd and 4th respectively. In Year 7, Lauren Brown flew through her heat in the U13 70m hurdles coming second, and qualified for the final although sadly did not place. In Year 8, Sarah Ellis completed in the 1500m and came in 7th in her final.

In the ESAA Track and Field National Final Alex Cooper and Joe Morrice both recorded two new life time best performances in the 80 metres hurdles. Joe was within two tenths of a second of breaking the school record and was fourth fastest from the twenty four competing athletes. In the 1500 metres Charlie Kendrick ran his second fastest time of the season and James Taylor smashed the school record with a time of 4 minutes 45 seconds when winning his heat and was fourth fastest on the day. Cooper Bent was second fastest on the day when winning the100 metres in a time of 12.2 seconds and Fraser Foster recorded a new life time best performance in the 200 metres. David Elphinston equalled his personal best in the 400 metres and Alex Dew, one of only two Year 7 boys in the team, ran a new life time best in the 800 metres.

In the ESAA field events Harry Ferguson and Narcis Badea both recorded new life time best performances in the shot put. Jonty Thornton, fifth best jumper on the day, and Fraser Foster achieved new life time best performances in the long jump.

Our two high jumpers performed exceptionally well with David Elphinston finishing in second place overall with a jump of 1.62 metres and Alex Cooper equal sixth best with his second best ever jump in a competition. Joe Morrice was second in the triple jump and Henry Walker third in the javelin.

Summer 2011 – Team AchievementsThe Year 7 & 8 girls competed in the Regional A final in the English Schools Athletics Cup. Overall, the girls were 6th.

At the IAPS Regional Round Athletics Championships the Girls’ U14 relay team consisting of Alycia Nattress, Liza Welch, Imogen Sapstead and Lauren Brown (plus Anastasia Brantingham in the qualifying heat), came 1st in the final with a time of 56.61 seconds. They qualified for the National Final.

Also at the IAPS Regional Round, the boys’ year 8 4 x 100 metres relay team of Cooper Bent, Jonty Thornton, Joe Morrice and Harry Ferguson ran the fastest time by any Bromsgrove team in a decade.

The Prep School boys finished 6th overall in the ESAA Track and Field National Final; a competition that had over 600 entries back in May 2011.

BadmintonSummer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursJack Thornley secured a place in the U13 Warwickshire County Badminton Squad.

CricketSummer 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursHenry Moberley, James Taylor and Lawrence Hill have played for Worcestershire and Tom Banton for Warwickshire.

Henry Moberley, Henry Walker and Tom Banton have all scored centuries this season.

Summer 2011 - Team AchievementsThe U12 boys are Worcestershire County Cricket Champions and have qualified for National competition as U13s next year.

Cross CountryMichaelmas 2010 - Individual Representative HonoursCharlie Kendrick and Thomas Trow represented the district at the County Championships in Hereford.

Michaelmas 2010 - Team AchievementsIn the ESAA first round of the schools Cross Country Cup the junior girls came third overall and progressed to the Regional round.

The U13 senior boys finished as Midlands Champions in the Regional Final of the ESAA National Cup and progressed to the National Finals. Following this result it meant that the Preparatory School had been National Finalists in Cross Country competitions over the last nine years.

The girls and boys competed in the District Cross Country event at Sanders Park. The year 6, 7 and inter girls’ teams all won their races and the boys finished in 2nd place overall.

Lent 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursNational Prep School Cross Country Championships:U13sAll girls came in the top seventy-four runners. Four girls were running a year early from year 7 - Lauren Brown, Libby Ball, Olivia Bond and Poppy Westwood and two year eights Sarah Ellis and Kirsty Beswick. Sarah Ellis came in fourteenth, the best result of the day for the Bromsgrove U13 team.

U11sAbi Saker 3rd, Eleanor Childs 8th, Molly Trow who was running a year early 30th, Charlotte Campbell 77th. Claudia Moberley and Elouise Brookes also came in the top hundred.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsNational Prep Schools Cross Country Championships – U13 team 9th in the Country.

National Prep School Cross Country Championships - U11 team 3rd in the Country.

The Year 8 boys were National Finalists in the ESAA All England Cross Country Cup, as one of only two Prep Schools to have qualified. They also represented Worcestershire in the Regional heats of the ESAA National Track and Field Cup, qualifying for the Final. Overall they achieved ten life-time best performances and a final points total of 491 ranking them as the third best team in England.

FencingSummer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursJosh Gilbert competed at the British Fencing Championships, he has moved up the national rankings to 14th position in the country.

GolfMichaelmas 2010 – Team AchievementsThe golf team comprising of Tom Robinson and Lawrence Hill came 3rd in the U14 category at the IAPS National Golf Championships (Stowe Putter).

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursMatt Osborn gained a place in the Hereford & Worcester Boys’ Golf Academy.

At the IAPS Annual National Golf Competition Tommy Robinson was placed 4th in the U13s, Lawrence Hill 8th in the same age group, and Matt Osborn 8th in the U14s group.

At the Stowe Putter individual performances were: Tommy Robinson 2nd overall (1st in U13 category) and Lawrence Hill finished tied 5th overall (3rd in U13 category). Matt Osborn scored 44 points.

Lawrence Hill and Tommy Robinson represented Worcestershire County U14s.

GolfSummer 2011 – Team AchievementsThe Bromsgrove Prep School Golf Team of Lawrence Hill, Tommy Robinson and Matt Osborn played the IAPS Annual National Golf Competition at the Royal Lytham golf club and were placed 6th out of 29 teams.

At the prestigious Stowe Putter event Bromsgrove finished 2nd in the team event. The team comprised of Lawrence Hill, Tommy Robinson and Matthew Osborn .

HockeyMichaelmas 2010 – Individual Representative HonoursHannah Taylor, James Taylor, Harry Lloyd Jones, George Dunn, Jeremy Turner, Finlay Evans and Cal-lum Ross were invited to attend the Worcestershire Junior Hockey Academy.

Lent 2011 - Individual Representative HonoursDylan Longden selected for the U15 Worcestershire Junior Hockey Academy.

Lent 2011 - Team AchievementsBoys’ 1st VII - National IAPS Hockey Champions

Girls from Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 competed in the Super League Hockey Competition and were given a masterclass by International Ali Raza.

U13 Girls’ 11-a-side county hockey champions, 7-a-side county hockey champions and runners up in the National 7-a-side Mini hockey competition.

Summer 2011 – Individual Representative HonoursJames Taylor, Finlay Evans, Callum Ross, Jeremy Turner and William Draper-Barr were invited to attend the U13 Midland Schools’ coaching sessions for Hockey following their performances for Worcestershire County over the previous season.

Following the U13’s Warwickshire County Hockey Championships, Sarah Ellis was invited to attend Regional Training.

Dylan Longden selected as a goalkeeper for the U15 Midlands hockey squad.

Lent 2011 – Team AchievementsBromsgrove Preparatory School qualified for the IAPS Nationals at K2. The U11 boys’ and girls’ qualified for the National Finals in the Primary School’s Relays. The team won all races in the Divisional Round.

Summer 2011- Individual Representative HonoursAt the IAPS Swimming Championships, Sam Osborne gained a silver medal in the 25 metres butterfly & Jack Weston equal bronze medallist in U13 boys backstroke.

Prep School pupil Jack Weston (plus three others from the Senior School) was chosen to participate in Worcester County’s World Record attempt for the fastest ever 100 x 100m relay. The team now hold the 100x100m Freestyle World Record (1 hour 43 minutes and 53 seconds), breaking it by over 9 minutes.

Summer 2011 – Team AchievementsAt the IAPS Swimming Championships, the U13 Boys were joint runners up & bronze medallists in 4 x 25 metres medley relay. The U11 Girls also performed well, and were 3rd overall. The Girls’ team were also awarded a silver medal in 4 x 25 metres freestyle relay.

Swimming Summer 2011 - Team AchievementsAt the Seventeenth English School’s Primary Schools Relays the U11 Girls’ 4x25 metres medley relay team finished in bronze medal position overall. In the 4x25 metres freestyle relay, the girls finished in silver medal position. Overall they were awarded 2nd place, having only missed National Champions by one point. The girls had two podium finishes, which only one other school managed in the whole of England. The U11 Boys’ 4x25 metres medley team finished 16th nationally. In The 4x25 metres freestyle relay the boys ranked 14th nationally.

In the IAPS National Final the Boys’ team finished 4th overall and the Girls’ team were 5th – this means that Bromsgrove is once again the top prep school in the Midlands for swimming.

Water SportsMichaelmas 2010Sarah Ellis came 4th overall at the National Kayak/Canoe Championships in the U12 Kayak 500m Final. She and her partner then went on to win the pairs Kayak 500m Final and in the U16 Canoe 500m Final they came 4th.

Summer 2011Mitchell Wise has obtained his Cutting Edge Gold Award for Wakeboarding from the British Water Ski Federation. Mitchell is also part of the West Midlands Cutting Edge Team, based at West Midlands Ski Club.

Mitchell’s team came 2nd overall at the Church Wilne Cutting Edge Competition, with nineRegional teams competing. Mitchell was overall winner, winning the Wakeboarding, Kneeboard Trick and coming 2nd in the Trick Skiing Comp. He also went to the London Groms Nationals at Quayside, and is now ranked 6th in the 10-14yr age group .
