As term closes, the most visible sign of Bromsgrove’s future remains the new buildings, but the beating heart, rather than the shell of coming success lies elsewhere. You can go for headliners like the astonishing Year 8 boys who swept all before them as they won national championships, or the less glamorous Lower 4th Camp at Symonds Yat in the Forest of Dean, where an entire year group sleeps under canvas and endures rain, freezing rivers and long treks so that they may get to know one another and the ethos of this School rather better. As I frequently say, things go wrong every day and we, the School, make mistakes every day, but wherever you look among the young people of Bromsgrove, you see values, ambition and optimism. These have been evident over the course of the academic year as never before. I thank everybody who contributes to this most happy state of affairs, for I remain the most fortunate Headmaster in the country.

Building DevelopmentsAll fi ve of the new buildings planned for the south end of the Senior Campus are now under construction. The sites will be at their most intense in coming months, but the newly refurbished swimming pool is now operational and has given us a taste of the larger scale transformation to come. The builds are currently on schedule, and the difference they are making to the School’s skyline is already evident. As ever, I thank everybody for their patience; not least the staff who continue to park in Housman Hall every morning in order to keep the main car park as free as possible.

Academic News

English Trip to Brontë Country A twenty-strong group of AS English literature students and staff made an early start from the soft and familiar Worcestershire countryside to the black imposing moorland of East Yorkshire where the fascinating story of Wuthering Heights unfolds. The group visited the village of Haworth to dig a little deeper into the lives and times of the Brontë sisters; to place the fi ction into a landscape and build their own understanding of the classic novel. A series of talks and lectures allowed for exploration of alternative approaches to Wuthering Heights from feminist to Freud; psychoanalysis to self refl ection. Before returning home, pupils and staff took a jaunt across the moors to the fabled site of The Heights where they satisfi ed their literary cravings with readings from the novel on a heather-strewn hillside.

IB Visit to Olympic SiteIB pupils and staff enjoyed a fascinating visit to London to compare two different approaches to urban regeneration that the city has attempted; property-led regeneration illustrated by the London Docklands and sports-led regeneration in the form of the 2012 Olympics site. Discussion focused on who the winners and losers are in urban regeneration; very apt when, at the Olympic site, pupils were asked to speak to the BBC who were fi lming on the issue of ticket allocation and cost.

Banking and Football - Corner Stones of the UK EconomyThe Lower Sixth trip to London involved a mix of entertainment and education. Thirty-seven pupils started their day with a visit to Chelsea Football Club where they discovered the fi nancial details for a typical match day and looked at key principals behind the club’s branding, sponsorship, merchandising and pricing strategies. They enjoyed a tour of the club including the press room, the players’ tunnel and the pitch. Pupils then went on to the Bank of England, where they advanced their understanding of the Bank’s role in fi nancial stability.

Maths ChallengeOver 70 pupils took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Freddy Alford, Maxime Cox, Alice Smith, Evana Fleeming, James Lay, Andrew Ho, Jagraj Bhandal, Chris Foster David Zhang, George Draper-Barr and Justin Mong all secured the prestigious Gold Certifi cate.

Starpack AwardsAs well as winning the “Best School” award in this national competition, Tara Thorpe received an individual Gold Award for her work – one of only fi ve Gold Awards presented nationally this year.

Physics Olympiad Well done to Chi-Fan Leung who won a Gold Award at the Physics Olympiad, putting him in the top 50 entrants in this national competition.

Life Outside the Classroom News

European Youth ParliamentFifteen pupils spent a day in heated political debate at Birmingham Council House at the Midlands Sessions of the European Youth Parliament. Working in two committees, Civil Liberties and Legal Affairs, they found themselves in direct opposition over the issue of secularity in the EU. The winning Civil Liberties committee progress to the National Finals of the European Youth Parliament at Durham University.

BASE National Winners National Final Winner of the Business, Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) 2011.

Two Bromsgrove Teams entered the National Business, Accounting and Skills Education Regional Heat. Competing with over 30 school teams both our teams excelled themselves to fi nish as winners and as runners up. The winning team progressed to the Regional Finals in Birmingham where they competed against 29 other teams from around the UK. At the national fi nal, after presenting to 180 of their peers and the panel of nine judges, our team were ecstatic to be announced overall winners.

Of all nine judges, eight out of nine had the winning team in fi rst place, with only one positioning them in second place. The team were described by some of the mentors and organisers of the day as ‘natural presenters’, ‘shining’, ‘a credit to the school’ and ‘miles better than every other team’. Congratulations to the team members William Sarjant, Nicholas Garvie, Emma Sellers, Harriet Jones, Lydia Cotton and Josh Hutchings who each received £500 to spend on education and are invited to interview the CEO Mr Michael Ezza of the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales and will attend a formal three course dinner with him in London in September.

Debating Henry Morris and Will Sarjant continued their winning ways at the Bromsgrove Conservative Association Schools Debating Competition; this competition has been dormant for a few years but has been rejuvenated by Bromsgrove’s new MP, Sajid Javid, and all seven Bromsgrove secondary schools were represented. Throughout the evening they demonstrated superb debating skills and were deserving winners of the new trophy. Their prize also includes the opportunity to visit the House of Commons and attend Prime Minister’s question time with Mr Javid.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards presented Georgina Eales, Christina Rasanyagam and Richard Horridge visited St James’s Palace in London to receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards during the Easter holidays. The awards were presented by Colin McFarlane, an actor and voice artist.

IFS Student Investor ChallengeA team of pupil investors, Chris Dodd, Matt Drane, Lewis Martins and Max Thorpe qualifi ed for the regional fi nal of the IFS Student Investor challenge. After a tough set of rounds testing their fi nancial capability, business studies and economics knowledge they emerged as regional winners with the highest score of all the regional fi nals that have taken place. They now go forward to the national fi nal where they will compete against seven other teams from across the country. The competition started off with 7460 teams so to get to the fi nal 8 is a huge achievement.

German Exchange The fi rst ever joint German Exchange and History trip to Berlin was a huge success. The 18 pupils studying German stayed with host families in Potsdam and visited various sites including the famous Prussian palaces, Checkpoint Charlie and the Jewish Museum. There was also a tour of Berlin’s local radio and television station with an opportunity to see live programs being made. The 16 historians stayed in a hotel in Berlin and visited many of Berlin’s important historical sites and monuments such as Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the Stadium built for the 1936 Olympic Games.

Spanish Trip19 pupils and two staff enjoyed their week in characteristically hot sunny weather on the Costa Brava. French ExchangeWe welcomed our French exchange partners from St Vincent in Rennes who enjoyed trips to Warwick castle, Stratford, the Black Country museum and Cadbury World. One day was spent in School where they spent a morning in lessons with our pupils, and in the afternoon were given a tour of some of the historic buildings of the School by the very knowledgeable Mr Bowen. Some ventured in on Saturday to watch the cricket matches and try to make sense of the rules.

BFAME SuccessPupils from Bromsgrove School raked in several awards at the annual Birmingham Festival of Acting and Musical Entertainment (BFAME). Bromsgrove School was the only school involved in the Festival, with all other entries coming from theatre groups. George Toft’s performance in Dr Horrible was a great source of entertainment for the crowd. Todd Cross-Watson received a certifi cate of merit while Niall Hegarty took home the award for Outstanding Male Performance, awarded for his roles in Northern Lights. Star singer Fran Kingston was awarded the trophy for U19 Individual singing for her performance of ‘On My Own’ from Les Misérables. Art trip to Prague Our artists thoroughly enjoyed Prague, one of Europe’s greatest cities. They visited the Veletrzni Palace for the Museum of Modern Art and viewed a range of Czech and International Art. At the DOX gallery they were inspired by an exhibition of Martin Parr’s work, along with a massive shoe sculpture of the crucifi xion, a huge rotating red skull and a coach with a huge metal cylinder pierced through it. They were also impressed by the Mucha and Dali Museum.

Sport News

Cross CountryBecky Straw and Hannah Trow represented Hereford and Worcestershire in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Hannah ran well against girls in an older age group but pride of place went to Becky who fi nished 6th and was subsequently selected to run for England at the Home Nations Championships in Ireland.

Boys Win National Medley Swimming RelayThe Bromsgrove School boys’ medley relay team swam their way to a close victory at the Bath and Otter Swimming Relays. Both the boys and girls swimming squads participated in swimming relays at Crystal Palace and the performance of the day was awarded to the boys’ medley team consisting of Dan Ruckwood, Jack Slattery, Jan Carius and Stefan Squire who qualifi ed for the fi nal as the second fastest team in the heats but in the fi nal shaved a crucial two seconds from their time to be crowned champions.

Mercian League ChampionsBromsgrove School Football 1st XI topped off an undefeated season as champions of the Mercian North Football League. An exciting 2-2 draw with Welbeck was enough to keep Bromsgrove top of the league and become league champions for the fi rst time in the School’s history.

Tony WindoTony Windo has been appointed as Director of Rugby. Tony’s role will see him developing links with local clubs and schools, especially Worcester Warriors and promoting Bromsgrove as a centre of excellence for youngsters keen to further their skills and participation at all levels of rugby. Tony’s most recent role at Warriors was as Skills Development and Scrum Coach, a position that saw him work closely with all the club’s front row forwards in both the Warriors and Academy squads.

Netball National FinalsThe U16 girls’ netball team defended the title they won last year. Playing brilliantly across the court with sweeping end to end movement they won the admiration of many, and in the semi-fi nal they comfortably eased past Truro School 14-8. In the fi nal they faced Hulme, a team they had beaten by one point in the semi-fi nals in 2009. It was the tensest of National Finals and at the end scores were level. In a two minute each way extra time Hulme won 16-15.

AthleticsNot satisfi ed with reaching the National Hockey and National Netball fi nals earlier this year, the Senior School girls’ have now completed a hat-trick and have reached the Field and Track National Athletics Finals, where they will represent the Midlands. After comfortably winning the fi rst

round of the English Schools competition, the intermediate girls went into the Midlands fi nals feeling quietly confi dent. By amassing a superb 382 points Bromsgrove beat strong competition to gain a place at the National Finals in Abingdon. The team consisted of Rachel Elt, Jenny Moore, Pascale Massey, Millie Doherty, Hannah Trow, Lydia Evans, Poppy Jones, Tara Thorpe, Alison Garvie, Georgina Boffey, Chloe Broomfi eld, Olivia Lyons and Freddie Robbins.

Stowe School Invitational Swimming RelaysAn astonishing day of success saw Bromsgrove School’s boys and girls swimming squads clean up with medals in every event. The Bromsgrove teams competed at the Stowe Invitational relays against strong competition from other top schools across the country. Outstanding team performances in the U14 boys, U16 girls and U18 girls freestyle relays saw all three teams win gold. Five silver and two bronze medals were also won. All medals were presented by the Great Britain international swimmer Craig Gibbons.

40 Club The 1st XI played the 40 Club in what Mr Fallows describes as a near perfect game. Having won the toss Bromsgrove posted a monumental 341-4 declared off 50 overs, led by stand in captain Brett Huxley breaking the highest individual score in the school’s history scoring 203 not out. In response the 40 Club would have a possible 59 overs bowled back at them and were restricted to 222 all out, with Brett Huxley

and Adam Clegg taking 3 wickets each. They were well supported by some outstanding ground fi elding and catching. The game was played in good spirit and the 40 Club were very complimentary of the School.

Charity Fun RunTen Housman Hall pupils, along with Mr Jones and Mr George, took part in the challenging 10k Fun Run and raised £600 for Leukemia Research. After the race the runners received medals and the pupils were treated to a Pig Roast in the grounds of Housman Hall to celebrate their achievement.

Pirates The Year 1 Pirates topic certainly fi red up the imagination of pupils and staff alike. Activities included a tricky treasure hunt and an art and craft session to create a realistic pirate ship picture. The children quenched their thirst with a spicy pirate drink and enjoyed “pirate toast” cooked over an open fi re, before sailing off into the sunset on Taylor’s Treasure.

Pupils were astonished to learn that letters they had written inviting an imaginary pirate to visit had been answered, in the form of pirate James Cuthbertson. He told the tale of his life with the dead captain Jack and his scurvy shipmates. The children sat spellbound as he described the pirates’ fi erce battles, their cutlasses fl ashing in the sun. Some readers may see the uncanny likeness to Mr Jonti Marks, Head of Drama at Prep School.

Vet Visit Reception learnt about ‘People who help us’ when they were visited by Mrs Alma who is a vet. She brought some animals with her for the children to meet and talked about her work. Firefi ghtersReception spent the morning with one of the Pre-Prep parents who is a Firefi ghter. He told them all about his job and taught them basic fi re safety rules. They enjoyed trying on clothes and practising with the water hose.

World Book DayAll the children and teachers dressed up as characters from books. A grand parade in assembly was followed by a

quiz and other activities included a Bear Hunt through the school garden, a ‘Where’s Wally?’ hunt and various other reading games and fun.

Red Nose DayPre-Prep all ‘Did Something Funny For Money’ to support Comic Relief, by having a pyjama day in school. Some of the parents also joined in the fun by dropping off their children wearing their pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers!

Show GardenReception enjoyed a visit to the Three Counties Showground in Malvern where they helped with some of the show gardens. The Pre-Prep is very excited to be involved in designing and creating their own garden for the show next year.

National Poetry Winners Last year Pre-Prep submitted poems to a poetry competition and a number of the entries were selected for publication in an anthology called ‘My First Riddle’. As a follow up to this, staff were delighted to learn that our School had won the National Young Writers competition associated with the anthology. The prize was a cheque for £1000.

Project Rainforest Year Two had a fantastic hands-on animal encounter as part of their rainforest project. The children bravely handled animals from each layer of the rainforest including hissing cockroaches, a tarantula, a carpet python and a harris hawk.

Happy Hat LandThe Nursery performed a musical ‘Happy Hat Land’, they delivered their lines and sang with enthusiasm and the show was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Royal Street Party To celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton Pre-Prep held a street party. The children all made crowns and fl ags and enjoyed a day full of wedding themed activities.

History Man VisitYear 1 experienced a Victorian school day with ‘The History Man’. The children completed vocal gymnastics (spellings), drill (P.E.), Bible stories, handwriting, arithmetic, drawing and singing. The children were so well behaved that in the afternoon they

played with a selection of Victorian toys.

Prep News & Sport

Science ‘Science is Everywhere’ was the theme to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week at the Prep School. It was all systems go with a mad hunt for 21 pictures covering all aspects of Science. In the Chemistry Department pupils learned how to make slime. Raft building and ‘deep sea diving’ completed the fun for Year 3 whilst Year 4 had a go at chromatography and mixing liquids.

Year 6 enjoyed a Science Day at Senior School – orchestrated by Dr Thompson Head of Science. Pupils used liquid nitrogen to make ice cream, handled a variety of exotic insects and reptiles and watched some explosive experiments in the Chemistry labs.

Arabian Nights The Year 8 play is a celebration of many things; the culmination of six months hard work by a very talented group of children, aided and abetted by a dedicated team of teachers, it is the collaborative nature of the work that makes it so special. This year’s production of Arabian Nights was a tribute to the pupils and staff and was a real treat for the audience.

Year 6 Performed a very slick production of Aladdin and Year 3 amused their audience with A Troy Story.

Comic Fun Year 6 enjoyed a real treat when the cartoonist and comedian Kev Sutherland hosted two workshops in which pupils were able to create their own comics.

The workshops began with looking at comics that Kev has worked on including The Beano and Dr Who. A series of cartoon demonstrations followed and then it was down to work.

Ormerod PavilionJohn Ormerod, a former Headmaster of Prep School, died last year. John had a real passion for cricket and it was fi tting that a Pavilion, named in his honour, was offi cially opened under a glorious blue sky at the start of the summer term.

World Book DayWorld Book Day was celebrated in style by dressing up as book characters. As always, the costumes amused and amazed us all. The older children celebrated the day by inviting the teen fi ction writer, Sarah Singleton, to speak about her career as a journalist and novelist, her books and creative writing tips.

And now over to the Bromsgrove Studio…Michael Collie, Bromsgrove parent and Midlands Today presenter, enthralled Year 3 with tales of his career and his journey towards becoming a news presenter. He was truly inspirational as he transformed Maple Hall into a recording studio – fi nding jobs for every child. The

children now appreciate the enormous workforce that toil behind the scenes to provide the daily news on television.

CricketThe U12 boys are Worcestershire County Cricket Champions and have qualifi ed for National competition as U13s next year. Four boys have played for the county this year, Henry Moberley, James Taylor and Lawrence Hill for Worcestershire and Tom Banton for Warwickshire. Henry Moberley, Henry Walker and Tom Banton have all scored centuries this season – well done!

Aquathon WinThe U11 and U13 boys and girls took part in the 5th annual The Downs, Malvern College, Aquathon in the grand setting of Malvern College. The competitors swim 100 metres and then immediately run 800 metres around the college grounds. Our team competed well against some strong opposition and were delighted when the fi nal scores confi rmed our teams in overall fi rst place.

SwimmingAt the IAPS National Finals at the K2 sports complex in Crawley, West Sussex the Year 5, 6, 7 & 8 boys combined age groups fi nished in fourth position overall with the U13 boys joint runners up. The Year 5, 6, 7 & 8 girls fi nished in fi fth position overall with the U11 girls in third place overall.

The U11 girls also competed in the National Primary School’s Relays at Ponds Forge Swimming Centre Sheffi eld, where they fi nished as runners up.

U13 Boys - A Sporting Phenomenon A Group of Year 8 boys have proven themselves to be exceptionally talented sportsmen in a run of huge successes across several sports. As well as forming the Rosslyn and Packwood 7s champion Rugby 7s squad the boys also had success earlier in the year with an astounding unbeaten Rugby Union season when the 1st XV team broke records with a run of 15 matches with 15 wins, amassing an astonishing 752 points and conceding only 30. The team were universally praised for their impressive skill and conduct in every match.

Boys from the same group stole the show at the IAPS National Hockey Finals at Millfi eld School, with the 1st VII battling their way to the top to claim the Championship.

In addition the same age group were National Finalists in the ESAA All England Cross Country Cup Final at Alnwick, Northumberland, as one of only two Prep Schools to have qualifi ed.

To fi nish the year in style the same group of Year 8 boys, representing Worcestershire in the regional heats, qualifi ed for the ESAA National Track and Field Cup Final. They achieved a total of ten life-time best performances and a fi nal points total of 491 ranking them as the third best team in England.

NetballAfter triumphing at the regional IAPS tournament, the U13 team progressed to the National Finals at Roedean School. The team faced challenging competition at the Nationals and unfortunately did not repeat their clean sweep, but they were proud to qualify and play in such a prestigious competition.

TennisYear 4 girls had the fantastic opportunity to attend the AEGON tennis championships at the Priory tennis club at Edgbaston. Held at this location since 1982, the tournament is played on grass courts and is seen as a major warm up tournament for Wimbledon and a sister tournament to the AEGON championships, part of the ATP tour, which is held at the Queen’s Club, London.

AthleticsThree boys, Henry Walker, Joe Morrice and Cooper Bent, represented Herefordshire and Worcestershire at the prestigious Mason Trophy athletics match at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Henry and Joe were selected to represent the county at the English School’s Championships in Gateshead. The fi rst pupils ever from the Prep School to achieve this honour.

Anthony (Roundy) Rudell (Elmshurst 1960-1963)We learned with great sadness that

Anthony Rudell, known as Roundy, passed away in May 2011. Roundy was not only an Old Bromsgrovian but also a Foundation Trustee and a great friend to the School. He will be sadly missed by all. A full obituary will be published in The Bromsgrovian.

Dr Stephen Marsh-Smith (School 1963-1968, Director of the Wye and Usk Foundation) has also been appointed an OBE for services to the Rivers Wye and Usk.

Professor Christopher Hood FBA (Gordon 1960-1965) has been awarded a CBE for services to social science. Professor Hood is Gladstone Professor of Government and Fellow of All Souls College Oxford.

Birthday Honours for Old Bromsgrovians

We are delighted to announce that several Old Bromsgrovians have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011.

Robert Dowler (Gordon 1958-63) has been awarded an MBE for services to the Voluntary Sector.

Helen Braithwaite (Mary Windsor 1979-1984) has been appointed an OBE. Helen is Resilience Manager for the Government Offi ce for the West Midlands.
