SCHOOL ABSENTEE VOICEMAILS
When leaving a message on the school absentee voicemail could you please VERY CLEARLY STATE your
child’s name and grade, the date/s of the absence and the reason why your child will not be attending school.
We have been experiencing incidents where we are having difficulty understanding the messages being left and
this is therefore having an impact on the school holding accurate information.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
If your child is absent from school for any reason, we require parents/guardians to notify the school office that
they won’t be attending. When your child returns to school, a note must be given to their teacher detailing the
date and the reason for the absence.
If your child has any long term absences from school, (eg. holidays, extended illness etc) a note is required to
be given to their teacher informing them of the absence prior to them commencing the absence.

PRINCIPAL WRITES
BELLBRIDGE CROSS COUNTRY
We can all be very proud of the performance and behaviour of our students who represented Bellbridge at the
recent District Cross Country competition. Our school received many positive comments from staff and parents
attending the event about the respectful and responsible behaviour of our students.
The families of the students who participated in this event can be very proud of their children.
Our UNIFORM POLICY and HOODIES
Some members of our School Council have been made aware of misunderstandings amongst a few of our
families in relation to our expectations regarding students wearing hoodies at school.
An excerpt from the policy re: Implementation of the Dress Code states:
Hoods on ‘hoodies’ are to be worn off the head whilst at school. This refers to Grade 6 ‘Class of 2016’ hoodies and any other hoodies students wear to school.
This expectation has been in place for several years and supports our SWPBS expectations – Be Safe, Be
Respectful and Be Responsible.
If any parents have any queries or concerns about this expectation they are encouraged contact the Office (9749
6161) to make a time to meet with the Principal.
(A copy of our Student Uniform Policy is included with this newsletter for your reference)
NAPLAN
Students and staff in Grades 3 and Grade 5 have been participating in NAPLAN this week. Our teachers have
been preparing our students for the type of testing involved in NAPLAN and our students have developed a
positive approach to this national testing exercise because of their teachers thoughtful planning, dedication and
commitment.
A special feature of the week of NAPLAN for the students at Bellbridge is the celebration they will have on
Friday, as a way of acknowledging their efforts. Notes will come home to inform parents about how students
will be celebrating on Friday, e.g. out of uniform, picnic, party, games.
GOLDEN WHEEL AWARD
Bellbridge Primary School achieved the
BEST Active Travel rate in Victoria in
Term 1. A representative from Bicycle
Network Victoria attended our assembly
and presented our school with the ‘Golden
Wheel Award’.
Our rate of active travel has increased
steadily from an average of 30% of students
walking, riding, scooting and skating to
school in March 2015, to our current
average of 50 – 60% in March 2016.
We congratulate our families for supporting
this healthy initiative and joining our staff
in teaching children to take the active travel
options when travelling to school.

ANNUAL REPORT to the SCHOOL COMMUNITY
The Annual Report to the School Community for 2015 was approved at the recent School Council meeting and
has been submitted to the Department of Education. A copy of this document is available for viewing on our
school web page (www.bellbridgeps.vic.edu.au). A general summary indicates the following:
Our students are achieving at a ‘similar level’ (within 60% achievement band) in all areas of student
learning
Our parents’ level of satisfaction is generally higher than the state average
Our staff level of satisfaction re: teaching, learning, supportive leadership and professional development
is higher than the state average
Our School Council has managed our funds in a strategic and constructive manner to address the
increasing student enrolments which has increased our number of classes from 27 in 2015 to 30 classes
in 2016
WORK SAFE INSPECTIONS
Over the past two months we have had Work Safe inspections at our school based on a number of anonymous
complaints. Each inspection has resulted in an outcome that states the claims were unsubstantiated. It has been
quite disappointing to read some of the allegations contained in the complaints, which have been false, and at
times, based on misinformation and misperceptions.
It is also disappointing that these pointless investigations have resulted in several hours of work for Work Safe
officers who have more important safety issues to deal with.
IMPORTANT: If any of our parents believe that our school facilities pose a safety risk to students, parents or
staff, they are directed to write a letter to the principal outlining the concern or make an appointment to meet
with the principal to discuss the concern and seek a shared solution.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The Bellbridge Primary School Council generally meets on the third Monday of each month. Our School
Council President is Ellisa Cole and the Vice President is Sharon Davidge. Members of our School Council
also attend Finance Committee meetings and Fundraising meetings. The agenda for each meeting includes
formal reports (e.g. Finance, Principal’s Report), reference to correspondence (incoming and outgoing), review
of policies and procedures, and general business. We understand that some school councillors may be aware of
issues that are topics of interest to members of our school community but they are unable to present an issue on
behalf of others as the message may be ‘lost in translation’. Therefore, we encourage parents who wish to raise
issues with School Council do this via a formal letter which will be included in correspondence and general
business, if necessary.
Our next meeting is Monday, May 16th
.
