Director's NotesIt was in my first year at Bury Grammar School that I was asked to direct Les

Miserables for the first time and it is as much of a pleasure now, nine years later, asit was then. This time we are performing in the Boys' School hall and with an equallytalented and dynamic cast from both schools. Les Miserables holds a special place in

my heart because it was one of the first West End productions I saw as a child and myparents played the soundtrack for months afterwards. It has truly stood the test of

time and is now in its 32nd year in London's West End. Schools have been privilegedto have been given the opportunity by Cameron Macintosh to produce the show for

over fifteen years, which has enabled pupils of different generations to experience thisuniversally appealing piece of musical theatre.

I was also lucky to have been invited by the Queen's Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue, towork on the production in the West End as a work experience day. I was able to run

the show back stage with the stage manager and experience exactly how it works on aprofessional level. This was an invaluable opportunity and one that I will never forget.I was also very privileged to watch a former pupil in the same production who went onto play Eponine. I know that some of the members of our current cast are consideringa career on the stage and I hope that the experience of being part of this musical will

have helped them on that journey. As always these school productions rely on thehard work and dedication of the staff of the Bury Grammar Schools and our Parents'

Association and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them on behalf of myselfand the pupils as without them the show would simply not go on.

Now sit back and enjoy the show!H Hammond
