March GreetingsWe look forward to seeing you at 3rd Quarter Parent/Teacher Conferences on March 2nd and 7th. Conferences are a great time to discuss your child’s progress. If you don’t have

a time to visit with your child’s teacher yet, please contact them to set up a time. Our goal is always to visit with 100% of our families!

March is a busy month for testing. Our 3rd through 6th grade students will start the Nebraska State Assessments at the end of March. We hope everyone will be healthy during these testing periods. Starting off the day with a good breakfast and encouraging words to do their best will be helpful!

December/January Students of DistinctionDuring the month of December and January, Dundee staff and students

focused on the “Character Counts” trait of Caring. Students showed they cared by being supportive and responding to the needs of others with kindness and compassion.Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent their class as the Student of Distinction in the area of Caring.

Congratulations to Ms. Anderson’s class and Mrs. Zimmerer’s class for being recognized as the most Respectful during these same months!

School ArrivalIf your child does not eat breakfast, we would like them to arrive at Dundee no earlier than 8:30 a.m. We have some students arriving at school way before 8 a.m. who are not eating breakfast. There is not adequate supervision before 8:30 a.m. Thank you so much for your help in this matter. Principal Appraisal and School Climate SurveysA performance appraisal and school climate survey is conducted annually. If you have an email on file, you may have already received this survey online. If not, we will have paper copies available for your completion at Parent/Teacher Conferences. I truly value the feedback the survey provides. I use the information to help make Dundee a great place to be for all!

Hope you can visit us often! - Ms. Kaye Kennedy

DONATE & RECYCLE them back to Dundee! Instead of donating Dundee Wildcat gear to the Goodwill or another organization, donate them back to the real Wildcats! We’ll collect all kinds of Dundee apparel – t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, bags, sweatpants. Anything you have that is “vintage” Dundee Elementary goods. Please make sure it’s in good, usable condition. If it’s become a painting t-shirt you might want to keep it. We’ll then sell those on-line for a discounted price. Bring them to school and leave them with your teacher or drop them off at the office.

All profits from the sale of “recycled” Dundee apparel goes towards the school.

What to do with old Dundee Elementary shirts that your kids have outgrown?

Thank you to all who purchased candy-grams during our Valentine’s Day promotion. Below are the results from our sales.

Total Candy-Grams Sold: 4,900

Total amount of money raised sent to Mrs. Anderson and Sabrina:

$845.00

Thank you for all your generosity and the amazing counting, organizing, and sorting skills of Dundee’s Student Council. We really appreciate your support for this every single year.

Annual TestingMarch will be the beginning of our annual testing; both our teachers and students work really hard to prepare for this. I know that testing is important as a way to measure competency yet it saddens me to see how stressed out some of our students become. Please encourage them to do their best but let them know that their self-esteem shouldn’t be based solely on a test score. Whenever I can during my lessons, I try to emphasize how we all have strengths and talents in different areas, and not all of us are good at taking paper, pencil, and computer tests. Please try to help them cultivate an attitude of:

“I want to do well” and “I have prepared very hard for this test” because that is so much healthier than

“I have to do well.”

Summer in the City (details on page 4)

If you are looking for something to keep your children occupied this summer, then be sure to check out the information about

“Summer in the City.” This event will occur on Thursday, March 30th, from 6 – 7:30 at Monroe Middle School, 5105 Bedford Avenue, Omaha. Different organizations will have display booths with information about their programs and sign-up opportunities available for your family. It truly is an informative evening as you think ahead to the summer months.

THIS MONTH'S POIGNANT MOMENTOne of our teachers had this sweet interaction with a student who has some difficulty communicating. During a math lesson, she took her student’s hands and looked into his/her eyes and said,

“Now, you know I just want to help you learn this.” The student kissed each one of his/her fingertips and then placed his/her fingertips into her hands to show his appreciation. Some rewards in this job are immeasurable.

Quote on the blackboard:

"There are seven days in the week ... and someday isn't one of them." Enjoy and do today as best you can!

- Mrs. Mary Ann Colasacco

Thank you Dundee Families, Teachers and Staff for coming to the 2017 Sock Hop. We hope you enjoyed dancing the night away, grinning at the cameras in the photo booth, munching on popcorn and enjoying the quiet room.

It takes many people to pull off a fun family night. And in true Dundee style, all volunteer slots were filled and parents and teachers were offering extra help if needed. Thank you to our volunteers:

Breanda Mejia, Sarah Torres, Nate and Katy Dickerson, John Noble, John Helms, Meg Rutledge, Caroline Darling, AJ Cecil-Starlin, Heather Diaz, Joe and Trisha Howard, Shannon Bowers, Chris Steffen, Amber Glinke, Annmarie Anthony, Chris Cady-Jones, Jon and Sabrina Beck, Renee Wessels, Chad Anthony, Teri Sain, So Yun Grace, April Peterson, Michelle Korb, Piper Bourke, Erin Bunton, Liz Vokal, Emily Holtzclaw, Mary Ann Colasacco, Maggie Duffy, Jennifer Miller, Michelle Novak, Annie Catania, and Shelley Grimes

Your help as cashiers, glow stick sales people, snack table help, photo booth helpers, greeters and cleaning up afterward made everything run smoothly.

Also thank you to the many people who helped us bag popcorn after the PTO meeting. We were done in record time!

This year’s event was unique as we dedicated the night to our music teacher, Mrs. Anderson, to help cover some of Sabrina’s medical expenses. Between proceeds from the sock hop and the cash in the donation boxes, we were able to send $990.50 to Mrs. Anderson. Thank you all for generously supporting this serious need within our school community.

Register for Summer Fun and Memories at Hummel Day Camp! For 65 years, kids from all over the city have spent a week at Hummel Park Day Camp, organized by the City of Omaha. It a week long of fun-in-the-sun (and mud), doing all the thinks kids should do during the summer.

The cost is $95 for the week ($35 for campers that receive free or reduced lunch) and includes transportation from a number of pick-up locations around the city.

The week before school starts in the fall, August 7-11, there is a pick-up location at Dundee. Registration opens on Thursday, March 23rd. Please know that the camp fills quickly, so be ready to register your child at 8 a.m. Registration for other weeks/pick-up locations opens March 13th. For more information and to register, visit parks.cityofomaha.org/activity/hummel-day-camp.

Thanks to a discount from Aksarben Cinema and a grant from Omaha Schools Foundation, our 6th Graders viewed the movie Hidden Figures which related directly to their current math projects and Black History Month. - Mr. Naujokaitis

Congratulations to the Dundee Robotics Team "Gears Galore." They placed first at the Gateway Robotics Competition as well as winning the Engineering Award. This qualifies them to go to Nationals in April. Thank you to David Holtzclaw for the many hours he has spent preparing the kids for all their tournaments.
