Barcode readers / scanners Tips when selecting a barcode scanner:
• Wireless is an option—it allows for distance work, but check the cost • If you have a USB3 port on your host device (computer) some wireless scanners can draw sufficient power from your computer so that
they don’t require a separate power supply of their own • Wireless alternative—use a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet as a barcode scanner, with compatible scanning app installed.
Note that apps will use the device’s camera with auto-focus, so this will be slower than using a barcode scanner or data collector. Free apps are available—search the App store for iOS devices and Google Play store for Android devices. Look for barcode/inventory apps that allow you to scan to a file (some will do continuous scanning), save and send so that the data can be imported into your ILS if you are using them for stocktake. Choose apps that have a good rating. ○ e.g. LoMag barcode scanner for Android (save file to Excel format, then email)—does continuous scanning automatically. ○ e.g. Bar-code reader for iOS (iPhone / iPad)—scan and send list of barcodes by email. Turn on “Continuous mode” for more speed.
