STUDENTADVISORYBOARDREFLECTIVETESTIMONIAL
The members of the 2011-2012 Student Advisory Board would like to express the
important role in which the board has played in their academic, professional and personal
development. TheStudentAdvisoryBoardhasactivelyengaged students in their curriculum
andprovidedstudentswithagreatersenseofcommunity.Thesupportoftheboardhasmade
studentsfeelthatthestudentbodyisavaluablestakeholderoftheinstitutionwhosevoicecan
and will be heard. In turn, this has aided in student retention and in student involvement
within their academic community. Participation in the board has helped to refine students’
leadership skills as well as enhance core principles including integrity, teamwork abilities,
accountability,andresponsibility.

Duringthe2011-2012academicyear,theNewYorkInstituteSchoolofManagementStudent
AdvisoryBoardwascomprisedof30studentsrepresentingbothundergraduateandgraduate
studentsattendingtheManhattanandOldWestburycampuses.TheBoardworkedandput
togetherthefirstStudentLeadershipCounselDinnerandtheFocusGroupStudy.Board
membersworkeddiligentlytoaccomplishseveralgoalsthroughouttheyeartoenhancecurrent
andfuturestudentexperienceswithintheSchoolofManagement.

The School of Management Student Advisory Board serves as the dean's main channel ofcommunicationwiththeschool'sstudentpopulation.Reportingthroughtheschool'sdirectorofstudent advancement, interested students become familiar with and operate in the samemannerasaprofessionalboard.This invaluableexperiencehelps studentsdevelop leadershipand team-building skills, gain familiaritywithorganizational protocol, and learnbest-practiceparliamentaryprocedures.
StudentAdvisoryBoardMissionStatement:ThemissionoftheStudentAdvisoryBoardistoactas a voice and a conduit of students’ thoughts, ideas, needs, and to generate value-addingcontributionsinadvancingtheSchoolofManagement’smission.
OverarchingDescription:Students,asboardmembersrepresentingallSchoolofManagementdisciplines,areencouragedtofreelyexpresstheiropinionsandsuggestions.Theboardfocuseson furthering the development of high-quality, career-advancing business educationopportunities. The inputof theboard leads to continuedprogramgrowth,effectiveness, andopportunitieswithintheSchoolofManagement
Goal-Oriented: The StudentAdvisoryBoard is focusedonachieving results that studentswillseeduringtheirtimeatNYIT.Meetingsareheldinastudent-onlyenvironment,andofficersareappointed with designated roles and responsibilities.Members are encouraged to be open-mindedwhenexpressingtheirideasaboutwhatworkswellwithintheSchoolofManagementandwhatneedstobeimproved.
ReporttotheDean:Uponthecompletionofeachsemester,boardofficialscompileareportofstudent opinions and suggestions, as well recommendations for operationalizing theirsuggestions, topresent to theSchoolofManagementDean.Theboardworks collaborativelywiththeDeantoaffectcontinuousimprovement.
ProfessionalGrowthandDevelopment:Overseenby the School’sAssociateDeanof StudentAdvancement programs, student board members become familiar with and operate in thesame manner as a professional board. This invaluable experience helps students developleadershipandteam-buildingskills,gainfamiliaritywithorganizationalprotocol,andlearnbest-practiceparliamentaryprocedures.
CampuswideSupport:MembersandofficersrepresentboththeOldWestburyandManhattancampuses,andarechosenfromeverymajorwithintheSchoolofManagementtoensurefairrepresentationofallprograms,departments,andcampuslife.

A) Goal: Ensure each major at the undergraduate and graduate level is equally
represented throughout the board, on both the Old Westbury and Manhattan
campuses.
Result:Since,boardmembershipwasexpandedtoincludegraduatestudents,three
ofthefiveboardofficialsweregraduatestudents.
B) Goal: Enhance and support the growth and development of the School of
Management Student Advisory Board on the Vancouver campus of the New York
InstituteofTechnology.
Result: Theboard reachedoutNYITVancouver’s SchoolofManagementassociate
dean, Petra Dilling in regards to strengthening the Student Advisory Board in
Vancouver.AteleconferencewiththeBoardwassetupandtheNewYorkcampus
studentadvisoryboardmembersmetwith15membersof theVancouver student
advisoryboard.Thiscreatedanongoingbridgebetweenthetwocampusestoshare
andcommunicatethoughtsandideaspertainingtotheSchoolofManagement.
C) Goal:TheBoardrequeststhepresenceofDr.Boronico,athisconvenience,atone
boardmeeting per semester, in order to keep students updated on the status of
achieving AACSB accreditation. The Board also suggests holding one question and
answersessionwithDr.Boronicoperacademicyear,athisconvenience.
D) Result:Held a “Meet theDean”event for the School ofManagement students to
becomefamiliarwithandlearnwhotheirdeanisandhisrolewithinNewYork
SchoolofManagementStudentAdvisoryBoard

InstituteofTechnology. Studentsaskedquestions related to internships, jobs, and
the triple platforms of excellence which will further enhance their educational
experienceatNYIT. TheeventwasheldonNovember8th, 2011at theManhattan
campus. A total of 33 School of Management students participated and it was
approximatelyforanhourandtwentyminutes.
E) Goal:CompletetheSchoolofManagementStudentCodeofEthicsincollaboration
withDr.BillLawrence.
Result: Dr.Bill Lawrence along with the student advisory board members worked
andcompletedthestudentcodeofethicswhichwasalsoa topicdiscussedduring
theSchoolofManagement’s2011Stakeholder’sconference,heldonNovember17,
2011at8:30am.
F) Goal: Review the manner in which new buildings, rooms and resources on the
Manhattan campus are being utilized and ensuring such resources are being
appropriately used to further the academic and professional development of
students.
Result: Since the student advisory board has their own room on the Manhattan
campus,boardofficialswereabletomeetandholdmeetingswhenevertheywanted
to without reserving rooms (DL). This is much more convenient for the board
officials.

AdditionalOutcomes:
A) StudentLeadershipCounselDinner:OnNovember16,2011,SchoolofManagement’s
Student Advisory Board held the first Student Leadership Counsel Dinner. A total of
outstanding27studentleaders,representingallmajorsanddisciplineswithintheSchool
of Management, at both the Undergraduate and Graduate level participated in this
meeting.Duringthemeeting,studentsspenttheeveningsharingexperiences,concerns
andsuggestions.Through,thismeetingprocesswhichwasheldfortwoandhalfhours,
wecreatedourfirstS.W.O.TAnalysis,whichwaspresentedduringafacultymeetingto
provost, Dr. Rahmat Soureshi, Dean, Dr. Boronico, and Associate Dean, Dr. Robert J.
Koenig.
B) TheFocusGroupStudy:Duringthe2010-2011academicyear,theNewYorkInstituteof
Technology’sSchoolofManagementStudentAdvisoryBoardheldthefirstFocusGroup
Study pertaining to the food services facilities at ourManhattan Campus. The Focus
GroupStudytookplaceonApril12,2012at2:30p.m.attheManhattancampus.Atotal
of 43 students representing both undergraduate and graduate level, from both the
Manhattan and Old Westbury campus participated in a two and half hour meeting
session.ThroughparticipatingintheFocusGroupStudy,studentswereabletobeapart
of theSchoolofManagementdecision-makingprocesspertaining to the foodservices
facilities.Students learnedhowNYIT facultywork together to implementanddevelop
such goals, objectives, outcomes. By being engaged in meaningful activities like this,
students are furthering and enhancing their experiences professionally which will
preparethemfortherealworld.

• CreateaStudentAdvisoryBoardLogo:Thelogoshouldbepertainingtosomethingthatrepresentstheboardandstandsthetestoftime(timeless).Forinstance,boardmemberssuggestedthatthelogoshouldincorporatetheNYITglobeandcolors(goldandroyalblue).Itwassuggestedthatacommitteebecreatedwhichwillfocusonsymbolism,coloring,andimagery.
• IncorporateTechnology:Byincorporatingtechnology,itwilladdversatilityandconvenienceoftheStudentAdvisoryBoard’sinvolvementinsocialmedianetworkingwebsites.ItwassuggestedthattheboardshouldhaveaFacebookgroup,IPhone/Smartphoneapp,andatwitterpage.Thiswillallowstudentstobemoreawareofwhatthestudentadvisoryboardiscurrentlydoingandallowthemtoreceiveupdates.
• PromotetheNYITM.B.A.program:TheboardwillcontinuetoworkonpromotingSchoolofManagement’sM.B.AprogramwithDr.Koenig’sassistancewithintri-statearea.
• Createjackets/sweaters:Byhavinguniformedapparel,itwillgivetheboardmembersaprofessionalanddistinguishedlookwhenattendingeventsandtrips.
• StudentLeadershipCounselMeeting:ManyofthestudentleadersfeltthatthismeetingwasagreatsuccessandsuggestedthatthiswouldbeanannualmeetingeachsemesterandtokeepthemupdatedontheweaknessesoftheS.W.O.T.analysiswhichwasimplementedthispastfall.
• TeleconferencewiththeVancouverStudentAdvisoryBoard:ItissuggestedthattheboardmembersofNewYorkcampusesshouldteleconferencewithboardmembersfromtheVancouvercampusincollaborationwithDr.PetraDilling.Thiswillhelpstrengthentheirboardbyhavingmeetingsonamonthlybasis.

INTRODUCTION
During the 2010-2011 academic year, the New York Institute of Technology’s School of
ManagementStudentAdvisoryBoardheldthe firstFocusGroupStudypertainingtothe food
services facilities at ourManhattan Campus. The Focus Group Study took place on April 12,
2012 at 2:30 p.m. at the Manhattan campus. A total of 43 students representing both

STRENGTHS
• Studentsfeelthatthattheoverallsupportofthedeanisphenomenal.Dr.Boronicois
kindenoughtoprovideuswithfundsforthevariousactivitiesthattakeplacewithintheSchoolofManagement.Hemotivatesandencouragesustoattendevents,andmostimportantly,hemakeshimselfavailableatalltimes.
• Studentsthemselvesarethestrengthoftheschoolbecausethereissuchgreatdiversity.Studentsfrommanydifferentculturesrepresentthemselvesinvariousways.Also,Internationalstudentsaresatisfiedwiththeaccommodationsthatareprovidedtothem.
• Therearemanyopportunitiesforhospitalitystudents.Studentsbelievethattheyareattainingtheexperiencenecessary,bothinandoutoftheclassroom.Suchexamplesincludefieldtrips,opportunitytodoaninternshipatDeSeversky,andprofessorsapplyingtheirindustryknowledgeinclassroom.ThisishelpingthemtopreparethemfortheircareersaftergraduatingfromNYIT.
• Studentsarepleasedthattheinstitutionhasprovidedandsupportedstudentsconcernsandsuggestionsbydesigningthenewfacilitiesandroomson26West,61StreettosupportSchoolofManagementprogramsandinitiatives.Studentsareeagertoutilizetheseresourcesinsupportingandenhancingtheirownacademicandprofessionaldevelopment.
• TheAuditoriumonBroadwayisanimportantfacilitybecauseitallowsandgivestheabilityforimportantspeakerssuchasmayorBloombergtocomeinandspeak,andholdprofessionalevents.
• TherearemanydifferentclubsintheSchoolofManagement.Beingpartoftheseclubsgivesstudentsthechancetobuildtheirresume,anditexpandsopportunitiestonetworkprofessionally.
• TheSchoolofManagementisproudtocreatethemostimportantaspectStudentAdvisoryBoard,whichfallswithintheStudentAdvancementplatform.Theboardallowsstudentstoholddiscussionsrelatedtoissues,concerns,thoughtsorsuggestions.It’sanopportunityforstudentstovoicetheiropinion.Also,otherschoolsareworkingoncreatingaStudentAdvisoryBoardsimilartooursbecausetheyalsofeelthatit’sagreatwaytogetinsightofstudentslikesanddislikes.

• Studentsbelieveit’sconvenientthatyouareabletocreateschedulesonline,andallowsyoutoviewallofthecourseswhichareofferedduringacertainsemester.Itallowsforstudentstocreateaflexiblescheduleoftheirownchoice.

WEAKNESSES
• BothCampusesarecompetingwitheachother.StudentLeadersfeelthatsincebothcampusesrepresentsameclubs,thereshouldbemorecommunicationandbeabletoworktogetherasateam.
• ManyclubssuchastheNSMHandCEOclubdonothaveabudget;thereforetheyareunabletofurtherexpandtheirclubs.Boardofficialsofclubsareforcedtofundtheirownevents.Theyareunabletoattractnewmembersbecauseresourcesarelimited.
• HospitalityclubsinparticulararenotproperlyrecognizedbytheStudentGovernmentAssociation.Theyhaveahardtimegettingtheirbudgetsapprovedandreceivingrefundsforeventsandactivities.Therefore,tofindasolutiontothisissue,TheStudentAdvisoryBoardwillspeakwiththeStudentGovernmentAssociationregardingbudgets.
• Sincestudentshaveoffcampusjobs,theirworkinghoursareodd.Eventhough,theywanttoattendschooleventsandmeetings,theyareunableto.Therefore,itwassuggestedthatit’scrucialtoobtainaprivateinboxforstudentssotheyareupdatedaboutmeetingsandevents.
• MBAStudentsbelievethattheOralexamshouldbegivenbythesameprofessorswhohavetaughtthemthecourse.Student’sstatethattheydonotfeelcomfortabletakingtheoralexamwithprofessorsfromoutsideofNYIT,orprofessorswhohavenottaughtthemthecourse.
• Advisorsarenotawareofthecoursesastudentisrequiredtotakeforaspecificmajor.Therefore,Advisorsshouldbemoreknowledgeableofwhatcoursesarebeingofferedduringacertainsemester.
• FewcoursesthatMBAstudentsarerequiredtotaketoattaintheirdegree,arenotscheduledatnighttime.Thiscausesconflictswiththeirjobsbecausefewstudentsworkduringthedaytime.Somekeycourseswhichareofferedduringonesemesteroronlyoneclasspersemester.Thiscanleadtolategraduation.Therefore,thereshouldbemorecorecoursesofferedduringdifferenttimesatleasttwicepersemester.Preferablyholdingbothadayclassandanightclass.

• Thereshouldbemoreclaritywithwhateventsandextracurricularactivitiesstudentsarerequiredtoattendtoachievecertificates.Also,therearemanyeventswhichtakeplaceduringfreehour,sostudentsdon’tknowwhichonestoattend.

OPPORTUNITIES
• SinceNYITisadiverseinstitution,studentsshouldembracethedifferentcultureswhicharerepresentedthoroughly.Thiswaywecanhaveabetterunderstandingbetweenvariouscultures,aswellashavestudentscometogetherforonecause.Onewaytobringeveryonetogetheristhecampuswide“FestivalofLights.”
• SincetherearemanydifferentclubsandorganizationscreatedbytheSchoolofManagement,studentsshouldtakeadvantageandpartakeintheseclubsandorganizationsbecauseit’sanopportunitytomeetwithnewpeople,andnetworkprofessionally.
• Classeswhichhaveonlyfewstudentsworktothestudent’sadvantagebecausethereisagreaterchancetodevelopapersonalrelationshipbetweentheprofessorandstudent.Thisisimportantbecausestudentsbenefitofobtaininglettersofrecommendation.
• SincethereareSocialNetworkingwebsitessuchastwitter,Facebook,andlinkedin,it’sagreatwayforclubsandorganizationstopostupdates.Also,itgivesachanceforstudentstoposttheirthoughtsandconcernsimmediately,ifheorshehasmissedameeting.
• Sincetherearemanybulletinboardsaroundbothcampuses,wecanusethosebulletinboardstoadvertiseandpromoteevents.Itcanbeusedtothestudent’sbenefits.
• TheSchoolofManagementhascreatedmanypamphletsandcatalogs,thesepamphletsshouldbegivenoutduringeveryeventwhichisheldthroughouttheschoolyear.Forexample,theStudentAdvisoryBoardcentercardsshouldbegivenduringtheSchoolofManagementorientationssofreshmenareawareofwhatthepurposeandbenefitsofbeingpartoftheboardare.
• CareerNetisagreatwebsitebecausestudentshavetheopportunityforstudentstosearchforcareeropportunitiessuchasjobsandinternshipsrelatedtotheirmajor.
• StudentLeadershipCounselDinnerisagreateventitselfbecauseit’sagreatwaytobringambitious,determinedstudentleaderstodiscussandplanissues,concerns,thoughts,andsuggestions.

• Therearemanywaystoutilizetechnologyinthelearningprocess(DLrooms,Blackboard).FacultyandStaffshouldeffectivelyimplementitintoalearningexperience.

THREATS
• Eventhoughsmallclasssizesareanattractionforincomingundergraduateandgraduatestudents,butwhenfewstudentsshowup,classiscancelled.
• ThereisnoconnectionwithotherCollegesandUniversities.Therefore,weareunawareofwhatothercollegesinNewYorkaredoingintermsofextracurricularactivitiesandevents.
• NYITSchoolofManagementdoesnothaveanamethatotherschoolshave.Wehavenoknowledgewhattheopportunitiesothercolleges/universitiesoffer,thereforethere’sascopethatathreatofotherinstitutioncanserveasouropportunity.
• TheMBAChineseCooperateprogrampromisestheinternationalChinesestudentsthingsthatNYITisnotevenawareof.ThiscausesChinesestudentstobediscouragedandgivesNYITabadimagebecauseofthemisleadinginformationgivenbytheagencies.
• MBAstudentswhodesiretoapplyforthePhDprogramatColumbiaUniversityareunabletobecauseNYITisnotontheapplicationforselection.ThiscandecreasethechancesforstudentstoapplyfortheNYIT’sMBAprogram
• DocumentsontheNYITwebsitesuchascalendarsforprofessionalenrichmenteventsarenotproperlyutilized.Studentsshouldviewthecalendarbecausetheymissoutongreateventsandactivitieswhichtheyshouldtakeparticipatein.
• Studentswhoaretakingonlinecourseshaveadifficulttimegettingintouchwiththeirprofessors.Professorsarenotrespondingtostudentsemailinagoodtimemanner.Thiscanleadtostudentsnotproperlydoingaassignmentforthatparticularcourse.

Onbehalfofthe2011-2012NewYorkInstituteofTechnology’sSchoolofManagement
StudentAdvisoryBoard,studentleaderswhoparticipatedontheeveningofNovember16,
2011StudentLeadershipCounselDinnerwanttoexpressourmostheartfeltappreciationfor
bringingallSchoolofManagement’sstudentleaderstogetherandgivingustheprivilegeto
expressouropinionsinanopenforum.Byparticipatinginthismeeting,weCommunicatedand
learnedfromoneanother.EachonushadsomeStrength,Weakness,Opportunity,andthreat
