The mission of School on Wheels is to provide one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness.

The vision is to equip children impacted by homelessness with the educational tools necessary to achieve success in life and break the cycle of homelessness.

Dear Friends:

It is with great excitement that we present this years annual report which commemorates our TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY. During our rst ten years, we provided 33,889 hours of academic support and mentoring to Indianapolis most vulnerable population homeless children. In this report, we celebrate our rst decade of providing help and hope to those who need it most.

As we move into a new decade, it is indeed an honor and privilege to play an active role in breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty through education. The need for our services is stronger than ever. We have made a commitment to our kids and the community to continue meeting that need. We have a proven track record, transformative programming, and solid results. There has never been a more exciting time to join us on our journey to inspire learning, empower kids, and end homelessness.

On behalf of the 3,299 homeless children we have served since our founding, thank you for your generous support, active participation, trusted friendship and continued commitment.

Letter from the Chair

During a dif cult economy, you can imagine that the need for our services skyrockets and the communitys ability to support organizations and causes can lag. This year, the need for our services did rise tremendously, but our supporters rose to the occasion! We experienced a year of incredible growth, including the addition of new staff and expanding to a new tutoring location. We ended the scal year with a surplus that will be responsibly reinvested in our cause and help us reach more children in better ways. We have a strong board, talented staff, committed volunteers and motivated students. I am honored to serve as the Board Chair as we celebrate the impact of our rst decade. The next 10 years start with YOU!

Programs

Summer student photography is highlighted in this annual report.

PPLike a sponge, kids soak up everything and become that which surrounds them. School on Wheels is the best thing my child could be surrounded by. School on Wheels Parent

School on Wheels piloted its rst summer enrichment program that brought together three methods of learning: reading, writing, and photography. This work captures the imagination, talent and learning of students ages 9-14. Students enjoyed reading novels and creating their own hand-bound books. They delved into creative writing and poetry. And, perhaps, the most exciting learning took place behind the lens of a camera. The goal of the program is to make summer academic enrichment more meaningful and engaging, and encourage creative expression.

Tutors in ActionTutors in Action provides backpacks, school supplies, school uniforms, educational student assessment and one-on-one after-school tutoring to homeless children. Over 400 volunteer tutors visit ten homeless shelters and two public schools to provide free homework assistance, encourage reading and provide friendly educational support to homeless children. School on Wheels would not exist without the dedication of our tremendous volunteers!

Ignite Learning Ignite Learning provides educational advocacy and support to homeless parents and facilitates the process for homeless students to receive high school mentoring and college scholarships. Education advocates provide of ce hours each week that enable parents to seek guidance from a trusted source. Services include enrolling children in school, meeting with school counselors and teachers, and helping parents navigate Individualized Education Plans. One of the goals of Ignite Learning is to facilitate the process of our students becoming high school and college graduates.

Project L.I.F.E. The Project L.I.F.E. (Learn Independence and Freedom through Education) initiative matches middle school and high school students with academic mentors. Mentors and students meet weekly to set goals, explore post secondary education and career options, and create a very speci c action plan for achieving high school graduation with a CORE 40 diploma. Mentors steer students on a path to graduation, pursuing careers that they never thought possible and helping them become contributing adults within the community.

During the first 10 years, School on Wheels:

On September 10, 2011 we held our 10th Anniversary Celebration. Over 350 guests joined us for a fun- lled night at the Childrens Museum of Indianapolis. The evening paid tribute to the 10 most in uential people of our rst 10 years. The highlight of the evening was a special visit from two of our students, Ronnie and Fatima. Our Kids

Meet RonnieRonnie was one of our rst students. His mom had health issues, lost her job, lost her insurance and suddenly became homeless. Receiving daily after-school tutoring for several years, Ronnie competed in the spelling bee and his grades and outlook on life improved. Fast forward 10 years. Ronnie is now 17 years old and a senior at Broad Ripple High School in the Theater Magnet Program. He is excelling academically, lling out his collegeapplications and looking forward to his bright future.

School on Wheels has not only helped me through some rough years in my life (academically as well as emotionally), the tutors taught me valuable life skills, such as problem solving and time management. Ultimately, School on Wheels made me a better student, turning me into the successful young adult I am today. Ronnie

K dK dMeet Fatima

Fatima is ve years old and lives in a transitional shelter in downtown Indianapolis. She was a bit young for tutoring, but our volunteers noticed that she would poke her head in the room, curious about tutoring. Molly, a tutor, invited Fatima in and started basic letter recognition. In six months, Molly, along with several other tutors, taught Fatima to write her name, recognize numbers and colors, and is now reading basic words. Fatima just started kindergarten and, thanks to School on Wheels, is off to a great start.

Were proud to celebrate 10 years of success and all that Ronnie and all our children have accomplished. But we are not done. Th ere are many children, just like Fatima, who need our help. Together we can give Fatima the bright future she so greatly deserves. Th e next 10 years start with YOU!

Th e single most e ective tool in helping homeless families move from surviving to thriving is education. For the homeless children of these families, they not only need to thrive in school, they need to make education a part of who they are that is at the core of the mission of School on Wheels. Th e tutoring and mentoring of these young minds by School on Wheels is helping Holy Family Shelter make sure these children do not become the next generation of homeless adults. VolunteerVolunteers are integral to our service model. Sign up to tutor one hour a week and you will work with a child at a local shelter helping with homework, reading, writing and math. We also work with tutoring teams, corporate service projects, of ce volunteers and much more!
