The Mission: To provide one-on-one tutoring and educational

advocacy for school-aged children impacted by

homelessness.

The Vision: To equip children impacted by homelessness with

the educational tools necessary to achieve success

in life and break the cycle of homelessness.

Dear Friends:We are now in our 12th year of providing tutoring and academic mentoring to homeless children. As we reflect on the past year, we’d like to offer our gratitude to those of you who have played a significant role and joined us on this journey to break the cycle of homelessness through education.

As we present our highlights of the past year and look to the future, we want to thank our volunteers who gave of their time so unselfishly.  We want to thank our staff who worked enthusiastically to keep our programs operating efficiently by meeting the needs of each homeless child that came through our doors.  We want to add a special thanks to the Board of Directors and Advisory Board members who have represented School on Wheels with loyalty, integrity, competence and sacrifice.  Finally, we would be remiss not to mention all of you, who supported our organization through your many gifts. We commit to serve as good stewards of the resources you have so generously contributed. On behalf of the homeless children we are honored to work with, thank you for your continued commitment, contributions, involvement and encouragement.

Tutors in ActionTutors in Action provides one-on-one after-school tutoring, backpacks filled with school supplies, and school uniforms to children who are homeless. More than 400 volunteers tutor at homeless shelters, transitional housing facilities and one public school. Our tutors offer homework assistance, encourage read-ing and writing, and provide friendly educational support to students in grades K-12. All of these services are provided free of charge. The volunteers are the core of School on Wheels and their dedication makes this programming possible!

Ignite Learning Ignite Learning provides parents with educational advocacy and support to enhance their involvement with their children’s education. Our Program Coordinators provide office hours at our partner sites each week enabling parents to seek guidance from a trusted source. During these times parents can obtain information about mentoring and college scholarship opportu-nities for their children, or request support in enrolling children in school, meeting with school counselors and teachers, and navigating Individualized Educational Plans. The main goal of Ignite Learning is to actively engage parents in their child’s education, increasing the possibility of students becoming high school and college graduates.

Project L.I.F.E. (Learn Independence and Freedom through Education)Project L.I.F.E. matches middle school and high school students with academic mentors. Mentors meet with students weekly to set goals, explore post-secondary education and career options, and create a specific plan to achieve high school graduation with a CORE 40 diploma. Mentors guide students on a path to gradu-ation and exploring careers that they may have never explored otherwise. Most importantly, our mentors provide additional adult support, positive reinforcement and guidance for our mentees.

Summer Enrichment : Know My Story This summer, School on Wheels collaborated with numerous organizations to bring the Know My Story project to homeless youth. This was a six week writing and fine arts summer enrich-ment experience that allowed students to work with the Writers’ Center of Indiana to create and compile a bound anthology of their positive memories. In addition, students worked with Bunky Echo-Hawk, the Eiteljorg Museum’s Artist in Residence as well as AmeriCorps VISTAs, to create self-portraits and print them onto canvas bags to be distributed in the community to raise awareness of the issues facing homeless youth.

“We Grew Together” : Cindy and Sarah’s StoryCindy Ruby has been a School on Wheels tutor for three years. In the last year she took on the challenge of becoming a Project L.I.F.E. mentor. When Cindy learned about this pro-gram she thought she would be a great fit to provide in-depth guidance and consistency for a homeless student. A combination of personal experiences in knowing the importance of consistency for children, and tutoring experience with School on Wheels made Cindy jump at the opportunity to become a mentor. “I was at the point in my life where I could commit to a mentee and be there for her.” Cindy has fostered a productive and influential relation-ship with her mentee, Sarah, through Project L.I.F.E.

When Cindy first met Sarah, she was struggling in many aspects of life. Sarah had recently arrived at a new residence, along with her mom and four siblings, so there were major adjustments that Sarah had to navigate. In addition to this, as an eighth grader, she was suffering with school issues and trying to figure out where she belonged. At their first meet-ing, the two connected immediately. “Neither of us had done anything like this before, but thankfully our personalities matched. She thought I was funny and I thought she was funny.”

When asked about what she thought the added value of mentoring is to students, Cindy replied that the mentor “is just another person in your life who cares about you uncondi-tionally.” Cindy’s mentorship ensures that Sarah will always have someone there for her, no matter what happens. While Cindy is there to help Sarah with school work, the sessions often gravitate toward personal talks and life-guidance. “She really needs someone to listen to her,” said Cindy, “because in a big family you might not get the attention that you need.”

Cindy and Sarah will reach one year together in January 2013, and in that time their relationship has strengthened. “We just kind of grew together,” Cindy explains. Since these two were matched, Sarah has matured in a way that makes Cindy and the School on Wheels staff very proud. Cindy shares about Project L.I.F.E., “I look forward to our meetings and think so highly of the program and School on Wheels. It is great for me to be a part of this program and witness the increased level of confidence that Sarah has. I absolutely love it.”

Program OutcomesDuring 2011-2012 School on Wheels provided:

• 6,018 one-hour tutoring sessions

• Services to 407 homeless children

• Training to 283 new volunteer tutors

• 310 backpacks filled with school supplies to the children we serve

• 720 school uniforms to the children we serve

In a survey that was distributed to all School on Wheels families, we learned that…

95% of students believe their tutors help them learn

 93% of parents like having their child tutored

Based on academic data …

89% of students increased or maintained their math grade

89% of students increased or maintained their English/language arts grade

87% of individual class grades either increased or stayed the same from marking period three to marking period four

67% of students passed the English/language arts portion of the ISTEP test

60% of students passed the math portion of the ISTEP test

CJ first came to tutoring in 2010 at one of our emergency shelter partners. He was with his mom and little brother. Tutors instantly took a liking to this active fifth-grader with a bright smile. He was very trusting, loved discussing Star Wars characters, and yet sometimes took quite a bit of prompting to do his homework.

After several weeks, CJ’s mom, Sheila, reported to our Program Coordinator that the family secured longer term supportive housing and would be leaving the shelter. She was happy to learn that School on Wheels provided tutoring at the housing facility where they were moving, and that CJ would be able to continue to receive educational support from School on Wheels.

CJ, now a seventh-grader, has attended tutoring regularly ever since their move. He has created lasting bonds with several tutors and is also meeting with a Project L.I.F.E. mentor. He attends sessions, works hard, and makes everyone around him smile.

CJ’s little brother, Luke, started kindergarten this year. Luke was always interested in what was going on in tutoring. Now he gets to attend with the big kids, and is establishing great habits and learning how to succeed in school.

CJ and Luke’s mom, Sheila, is a great example of persistence and hard work. Since moving into longer term housing, she has started her own housekeeping business. She works long hours cleaning houses so that she can provide for her family. Sheila is also committed to giving back to the community.

She became involved in a program that helps families find long-term solutions to poverty. She attended classes and often talked with our Program Coordinator about the process. She is now involved in a leadership capacity to help other families who are experiencing poverty.

Sheila, CJ, and Luke are on the road to financial security. They all have learned to value education and the power of knowledge. Working together with School on Wheels, this family will continue to find success not only in school, but also in life.
