Our Catholic SchoolNext Sunday, Jan. 31, we kick off Catholic Schools Week at

10:00 Mass, and our SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE will follow

that Mass. I am proud to have a Catholic school that provides

our children with spiritual and academic growth. Our school

has an atmosphere where the children are being challenged

with a rigorous curriculum and are supported by caring

teachers. They also are provided time to worship and hear

the Gospel readings each week. They are being taught to

serve one another and to work on valuable character traits.

I have seen such wonderful growth in the faith life of our

schoolchildren by the way they behave and participate in

Mass and also by the knowledge they have of the faith. I

think these two areas help them appreciate and show that

they are grateful for what our school provides for them.

Amen? Amen!

THE READINGS FOR THIS WEEK

The Bible Challenge Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10 Psalm 19:8-10, 15

1 Corinthians 12:12-30 Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

“He came to Nazareth where He had been reared, and

entering the synagogue on the sabbath as He was in the

habit of doing, He stood up to do the reading.” – Luke 4:16

Jesus began His public ministry reading and pro-claiming God’s Word. Ezra began a renewal of the Israelite nation by reading and teaching God’s Word from daybreak to midday (Neh 8:3, 8). We too can begin this year with an extensive time in God’s Word. Consider committing yourself to read and pray the Bible for an hour a day till the beginning of Lent. If this seems too much, commit yourself to fifteen to thirty minutes of daily Bible reading for the next two weeks.

When we deeply expose ourselves to God’s Word, we are purified of evil (Eph 5:26) and trimmed of that which limits our growth in the Lord (Jn 15:2-3). By receiving God’s Word, we hear the Lord better and grow in faith (Rm 10:17). God’s Word will help us know ourselves better by judging the thoughts and reflections of our hearts (Heb 4:12). By God’s Word, we are fed spiritually (Mt 4:4), made joyful, and strengthened (Neh 8:10). God’s Word will make us “fully competent and equipped for every good work” (2 Tm 3:17).

These are only a few effects of God’s Word. His Word is so living, effective (Heb 4:12), powerful, and rich that this may well be the best year of our lives if we begin it with a deep experience of the Word.

• Prayer: Father, may I be as eager for Your Word as a newborn baby for milk (1 Pt 2:2).

• Promise: “If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members share its joy.” –1 Cor 12:26

• Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, the Light of Life (Jn 8:12). Alleluia to You forever and ever!

What does it mean to say that the family is a “Church in miniature”?What the Church is on a large scale, the family is on a small scale: an image of God’s love in human fellowship. Indeed, every marriage is perfected in openness to others, to the children that God sends in mutual acceptance, in hospitality and being for others.

Nothing in the early Church fascinated people more about the “New Way” of the Christians than their “do-mestic churches”. Often someone “believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many … believed and were baptized” (Acts 18:8). In an unbelieving world, islands of living faith were formed, places of prayer, mutual sharing, and cordial hospitality. Rome, Corinth, Antioch, the great cities of antiquity, were soon permeated with domestic churches that were like points of light. Even today families in which Christ is at home are the leaven that renews our society. (YOUCAT question 271)

Saint Sebastian (~257 - 288)Almost nothing is historically certain about St. Sebastian except that he was a Roman martyr, was venerated in Milan even in the time of St. Ambrose and was buried on the

Appian Way, probably near the present Basilica of St. Sebastian. Devotion to him spread rapidly, and he is mentioned in several martyrologies as early as a.d. 350.

The legend of St. Sebastian is important in art, and there is a vast iconography. Scholars now agree that a pious fable has Sebastian entering the Roman army because only there could

he assist the martyrs without arousing suspicion. Finally he was found out, brought before Emperor Diocletian and delivered to Mauritanian archers to be shot to death. His body was pierced with arrows, and he was left for dead. But he was found still alive by those who came to bury him. He recovered, but refused to flee. One day he took up a position near where the emperor was to pass. He accosted the emperor, denouncing him for his cruelty to Christians. This time the sentence of death was carried out. Sebastian was beaten to death with clubs. He was buried on the Appian Way, close to the catacombs that bear his name. – www.americancatholic.org

VISITING SEMINARIANS: St. Cecilia is always a popular

church to see in the area. Many priests and seminarians are

often referred to St. Cecilia for its beautiful church and

liturgies. During Christmas, we had many priests and

seminarians visit us. Pictured above from Mundelein

Seminary in Chicago are (left to right) Edward Dannemiller

and Michael Goodwin. 1 CHOIR PARTY: Every year the

choir gathers to celebrate Christmas. As always, the party

(photos, below) was hosted by Mary Lou Boylan, and as

always the party supplied much laughter and song. A lot of

the choir members take turns singing solos. I am always

asked to sing “Dead Dog Rover.” There is always a great

crowd. 1 AIR-CONDITIONING: As much as I was

hoping to have the new air-conditioning system up and

running by the end of last summer, it just was not in the

cards. The system is now installed (photo, left). The only

thing left to do is to put

Freon in the system and

then fire it up. The unit will

definitely be blowing cold

air into our church this

spring! I cannot wait to feel

wish. 1 BAPTISM DATES: In my homily on Jan. 10, I talked about

how we should remember and celebrate

our baptismal dates. Some of our

parishioners, Kate Harold and Mike

Bonomo, came up with a great idea on

how to do this. They had personalized

ornaments (photo, left) made for each of

their children with the dates of their

baptisms on them. Each year when they

put the ornaments on the tree, the

children want to hear the stories of their

baptisms. This is such a great way for the

children to realize how important this date was to their

parents and to help the children carry that excitement on in

their own faith lives. 1 FIRST SNOW: We finally had our

first real snow. I was able to take a picture when I visited my

parents on the west side for my birthday celebration. I got a

great shot (photo, below) of the river view from Mt. Echo Park.

Hahn explains the importance of oaths, which invoke God’s name and implore His assis-tance. He shows that oaths are also the means of transforming our personal relationship with Christ into a covenant relation-ship. Dr. Hahn then explains what led him to move from

believing in only two sacraments to all seven. In sharing these insights, he connects oaths to the seven sacraments and unveils their mystery and importance. He reveals that the sacraments are the ordinary means by which God empowers us to do His will. You’ll discover that the sacraments don’t make holiness easy, but they do make it possible.

Roe v. Wade The term “September 11th” has become a household phrase, representing a great tragedy when innocent people were callously murdered to further a selfish political agenda.

Yet another date, January 22, which is not nearly as well known, marks perhaps the most tragic day in our country’s history, the anniversary of the U.S Supreme Court’s decision of Roe v. Wade, which somehow found in our Constitution

the phantom “right” to have the inno-cent child in the womb aborted.

Since that decision in 1973, over 56 million innocent babies have been aborted in the U.S. — a number that far exceeds all the Americans killed in all the

wars combined since our nation was founded.Polls show that the majority of people do not realize the

full implications of the Roe decision. For example, a child can be aborted for any reason (or indeed no reason) throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy. The ignorance relative to Roe is by design. It is intentionally fueled by disinformation in the media.

Fortunately, both science and technology have advanced since 1973, so it is becoming increasingly difficult for the abortion industry to conceal and disguise the truth. For instance, 3D and 4D ultrasounds now provide a window into the womb, which clearly shows the humanity of the child and renders absurd their previous claim that “it” was “only a blob of tissue.”

made the choice of life for

her unborn child. Many

parishioners find this to be

a very positive way to

express their support for

the pro-life movement.

of suggested items. We are collecting baby items from Jan.16 through Feb. 7. Your participation is most welcome

Pregnancy Counseling Catholic Charities’ Pregnancy Counseling Program focuses on providing therapy to women who are struggling with various aspects of their pregnancies. The counseling addresses issues such as the initial concerns and anxiety about being pregnant, family discord, mood disturbance, and parenting skills. Licensed social workers and counselors provide the counseling. The counseling is performed at any Catholic Charities office, in the community, and in collaboration with other social service agencies.
