Mr. Paul Woods

Headteacher

Dear families, This half term has been an extremely positive one for our School. I have great pleasure in informing you that we have seen a huge improvement in our GCSE pass rate this year. 70% of our year 11 students achieved at least 5 good GCSE passes including English and maths which represents a 14% improvement from last year. In addition, 80% of

all students achieved A* to C grades in English Language, 73% in English Literature and 78% in mathematics. Overall 70% of all students achieved at least 2 good GCSE passes C+ in science. As you will appreciate this is testimony to the incredibly hard work of all of our students, our staff and indeed to you as parents and carers in the unfailing support that you have given your children in the course of the last academic year. The position with our current Year 11 students is also very promising. At the end of last year we entered all of the year 10 cohort for early GCSE English, maths and science. I am pleased that the on average 70% of students have achieved at least a grade C in these subjects. This indicates already that we are in a strong position to improve further in 2014.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMESSAGE FROM THE HEAD I want to impress to you that it is my mission to ensure that all students at Bishop Stopford’s continue to achieve their potential and have a happy and secure experience at our school. Our Sixth Form has also had some notable successes. One of our students has secured a place to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. Four other students are attending Medical School and over 90% were successful in gaining their first choice of university and many of these were with Russell Group Universities. We are extremely proud of our students and their success as I know you are. Our task is to spread this news in our local and wider community; spread the news that we are a fabulous school and that we are a meaningful first rate academic option for students in Enfield. Wishing you all a restful half term.

Paul Woods Headteacher

PRAISE WHERE IT’S DUPRAISE WHERE IT’S DUEE “To: Headsoffice Subject: Your students on bus journey Dear Head, I am contacting you about the behaviour of your students on a bus on which I was travelling yesterday, but I hasten to add that this is NOT a complaint. I admit that my heart sank when I saw a large number of students at the bus stop as I've had previous experience of bad behaviour by schoolchildren on buses. However, I was very much impressed by your students. They filed onto the bus in a polite and orderly manner with

no pushing or jostling, and though the majority of them went up to the upper deck, there was no rowdiness up there, the most to be heard were a few bursts of laughter. Similarly, on leaving the bus, your students showed courtesy to other passengers and the driver. It was so pleasant to see these students behaving so well. They are a credit to your school and if they continue in this vein will no doubt turn out to be fine young men and women and useful members of society.” (Mrs.) Angie Tillyer

DEPARTMENT AND HOUSE NEWSDEPARTMENT AND HOUSE NEWS for their outstanding achievement in last summer’s GCSEs, from The PiXL Club (Partners in Excellence). In October, Aaron Tuffuoh and James Kwewya attended the celebration event at the Central Hall, Westminister. The guest of honour at this prestigious event was Denise Lewis OBE who gave a fantastic speech. We were entertained by the PiXL Choir, lead by Bazil Meade, and performances from outstanding student musicians, singers and dancers. It was a fantastic event, enjoyed by all. MR DEAN

SIXTH FORM NEWS:SIXTH FORM NEWS: As last year’s successful students are settling in at universities, including our first admission to Cambridge for many years, Christiana Naziris, the new year has begun. Year 12 is larger than last year and is settling in to serious study. They have already had an enrichment session on independent learning and self discipline from an external provider, “Live-n-Learn”, which focused on personal organisation and setting targets for success. Our visit to the Millfield Theatre for the Local Authority presentation of “Safe Drive Stay Alive” was hard hitting as usual; the presenters are those who are really involved in the aftermath of fatal road accidents, the fire brigade, ambulance service, the police, someone who has been bereaved and someone who has been very seriously injured and this always has a profound impact on the audience. Our students behaved immaculately and took the message very seriously. Year 13 have had a presentation on personal statement writing from an ambassador for the University of East Anglia, Jess Smith, which was very useful and Jess spoke to Y13 parents that evening on how they could support the UCAS process which is now well under way. This evening also included a presentation on student finance to help

FROM THE DRAMA DEPT:FROM THE DRAMA DEPT:

On the 26th September, the Year 11 GCSE Drama class went to see a performance of the award winning play ‘War Horse’. The play tells the story of an unusual friendship between a young boy (Albert) and his horse (Joey). Set during the first World War, Albert and Joey are

separated by circumstances beyond their control. As the play unfolds we watch Albert’s heart wrenching journey to find his beloved horse. As Head of Drama, it is always a delight to take the students of Bishop Stopford’s School to the theatre. As ever, the students arrived immaculately presented and proceeded to conduct themselves maturely and responsibly. There weren’t many dry eyes as we left the theatre, and the students have since been working on a 2,000 word review of the production (which will contribute 10% of their final grade). Well done to the Year 11 GCSE class for representing the school so well! MISS WILES

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPT:FROM THE SCIENCE DEPT: Year 10 GCSE students will be starting their next controlled assessment (ISA) shortly after we return from the half-term break.

It is essential that the students do as well as possible, as these are the marks we will be sending to the exam board next summer. The marks will count towards their final GCSE Science grade. The students will need to attend all their Science lessons to give them the best chance of a good grade in the ISA. If you are aware of any likely attendance issues then please let the Head of Science know in advance. MISS JONES

DEPARTMENT AND HOUSE NEWSDEPARTMENT AND HOUSE NEWS our families plan for university. The UCAS process is under way; the early deadline applications for medicine and dentistry have already gone and Year 13 should be finishing their personal statements now. It is our ambition to have all the students into the UCAS process by Christmas so that they can focus on their work and preparation for trial exams in January with a clear goal to aim for. Rag week is taking place in the last week before the half term break to raise money for our sixth form charity, Hillcrest. MRS HANNON

If students are on Free School Meals then lessons are FREE. Collect an instrument form from reception for more details. We are starting up our Brass ensemble and Drum Club again... Keep an eye out for posters, more details coming soon! GCSE Course work is due in

soon... Dates to remember; Performances due week commencing 18th November/2013. Advanced Notice - Music Soiree on Saturday 23rd November 2013, reserve the date in your diary! ENFIELD YOUTH PARLIAMENTENFIELD YOUTH PARLIAMENT Our Head Girl – Elected to Enfield Youth Parliament The votes have been counted and the third Enfield Youth Parliament is ready and raring to go. Our very own Head Girl Lydia Weigel was elected on 22nd October. The Area Youth Forums give 11 - 19 year olds the opportunity to have a voice locally and to work on projects and campaigns that will improve

Enfield as a place to live.

This is an extremely exciting opportunity and it's an important avenue for student views to be heard in Enfield's Youth Democratic Structure. 27 young candidates stood for the election this year and over 9600 votes were cast over a period of 10 days. 64% of votes came from eligible local schools. The youth of Enfield made their choice for the 2013-2015 youth parliament. Cabinet member for Leisure, Sport, Culture and Young

people, Councillor Bambos Charalambous said: “I am proud to see so many young people embrace the challenges of the borough we live

in and do so with passion to make a difference to their lives. “This process is a very important one. It teaches you about responsibility, respect and how to articulate yourself when important decisions have to be made about service delivery to young people.” MRS GUNTER
