China has launched remote sensing satellite Yaogan-23 from Taiyuan

Satellite Launch Centre Yaogan-23 satellite will mainly be used for scientific

experiments, natural resource surveys, crop yield estimates and disaster

relief.

Yaogan Satellite series

In 2006, China launched the first satellite in the Yaogan series that is

Yaogan-1.

In future, China planned to launch about 70 remote sensing satellites to

detect the near-Earth space environment and predict extreme events.

China will also launch about 20 communication satellites to meet

communication demand in national security and public services.

Besides, China will launch about 30 navigation satellites to provide accurate

and reliable global positioning and navigation services.

Rosetta mission of European Space Agency (ESA) has landed its Philae

probe on the surface of Comet 67P/ Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Philae probe

landing on Comet 67P made a Space history, as for the first time probe has

landed on a comet. The 1 billion pound (1.58 billion US dollars) Rosetta

mission blasted off fromEurope‟s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in

March 2004, for a long journey involving loops around the Sun as it aimed

to get onto the same orbit as 67P.

India and United Kingdom (UK) have announced a “Newton-Bhabha Fund

programme” to scale up theirbilateral research & innovation relationship to

a greater level. This new initiative was announced during a meeting between

Union Minister for Scienceand Technology Dr. Harsh Vardhan and the UK

ISRO to Launch GSLV MK III in December

On 30th October 2014, ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan announced that

the experimental mission of Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle

Mark III (GSLV-MK III) will take place in the first half of December.

Date of the launch is not yet fixed because of the three reasons:

Preparedness of the vehicle.

Certain analysis and reconfirmation is yet to be done for the new vehicle.

Weather: from October middle to first week of December the weather

conditions are not good because of the cyclonic storms are so frequent.

About Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mark-III)

ISRO has developed the geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-

Mark I-III) with indigenous cryogenic engine

The main function of GSLV Mark-III is for Mid-Heavy Lift Launch System.

[SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY] November 28, 2014

Powered by www.gr8dreamz.com and www.praveenstech.blogspot.com Page 3

Objective: To launch heavy satellites weighing more than two tonnes into

geostationary orbit 36,000 km above Earth.

It will allow India to become less dependent on foreign rockets for heavy

lifting.

GSLV Mark-III comprises of three stage vehicle with a first stage consisting

of two identical large solid boosters strapped onto the second liquid stage.

The third stage is a cryogenic stage.

ISRO‟s flight development plans

First development flight (GSLV MK III D1) with an operational cryogenic

stage is planned in between 2016 to 2017.

Second development flight (GSLV Mk-III D2) is planned after one year of

GSLV Mk-III D1 flight in 2017 to 2018.

Successful flight development will help in India‟s manned mission to space.

The 630-tonne GSLV-MK III will carry a crew module of 3.65-tonne. ISRO

plans to send astronauts into space eventually.

Mom Inserted Into Mars Orbit

September 24, 2014 No comments

The Mars Orbiter Mission(MOM), or Mangalyaan was successfully inserted

into Mars‟ orbit on the 24th of September 2014 with the help of the Indian

Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This gives India the distinction of not

only being the first nation to send a satellite into Mars‟ orbit in its first

attempt, but also the first Asian nation to successfully send a satellite to

Mars. This combined with the fact that MOM cost India only a tenth of what

NASA incurred to insert its satellite into Mars‟ orbit, makes this

achievement a source of great pride to the nation.

India‟s first interplanetary mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan

Space Centre, Sriharikota on a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) on the

5th of November 2013. The satellite, weighing around 1,350 kg was on an

elliptical orbit around the Earth for a month before it set off towards Mars.

The objectives of the MOM are to study Mars‟ surface features, mineral

compositions and atmospheric conditions using indigenously developed

instruments. The mission also serves to showcase India‟s capabilities in

indigenously developing, planning and launching an interplanetary mission.

Apart from being a feat in itself, this latest milestone could help open up the

highly lucrative space technology market to India.

technologists who had to take a break in career owing to household reasons.

Bring about, as far as achievable, gender parity in the field of science and

technology.

The scholarships will be provided under three categories-

For those women linked in research work in basic or applied sciences with

any central or state level organization or university

For those women scientists involved in research and application of

innovative solutions for several social problems

For those researchers who are self-employed.

The emergency committee of the World Health Organization has

unanimously agreed to proclaim the Ebola virus a Public Health Emergency

of InternationalConcern.

As per the UN body, the possible outcomes of further international spread

are particularly serious in view of the mortality rate linked with the disease,

the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the

fragile health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries.

As per WHO, the current Ebola outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013

and has since spread to Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. As of August 4,

2014, 1,711 cases of the infection have been reported and over 1,000 of which

have been confirmed, and 932 deaths due to the virus have occurred.

IMG studying GAGAN‟s potential for non-aviation sector

July 7, 2014 No comments

The government has set up an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) under

Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation to evaluate the potential of GAGAN

(GPS Aided Augmented Navigation) system for non-aviation sectors.

Advantages of GAGAN:

It will modernize air traffic management and communication-navigation

surveillance system.

Aircrafts will get more accurate figures while landing, take-off and in-flight.

India would join the elite club of U.S., Europe and Japan who have the same

level of space-based augmentation.

GAGAN offers free enhanced satellite navigation signals over India which is

10 times more precise than GPS.

It can offer civilian users integrity, i.e. a measure of trust which can be

placed in the accuracy of the information supplied by the system, with the

user being automatically alerted whenever an error made by the system is

applications requiring legal recourse.
