National Science Day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm on

28th of February every year in order to commemorate the

invention of the Raman Effect in India by the Indian

physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. For his great success in the field of science

in India, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was awarded and honoured with the Nobel

Prize in the Physics in the year 1930.

Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, was an Indian physicist, born in the former Madras

Province, whose ground breaking work in the field of light scattering earned him the 1930Nobel Prize

for Physics. He discovered that, when light traverses a transparent material, some of the

deflected light changes in wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman scattering and is the result of the Raman effect .In 1954, he was honoured with the highest civilian award in India,

the Bharat Ratna.

Raman Effect

Raman effect, change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. When a beam of light traverses a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the

light emerges in directions other than that of the incident (incoming) beam. Most of this scattered light is of unchanged wavelength. A small part,

however, has wavelengths different from that of the incident light; its presence is a result of the

Raman effect.

Applications of Raman Effect

Technique gives or can generate Fingerprint of Universe. Raman Spectroscopy – Material Analysis.Raman Scanners to diagnose diseased cell, organ etc. Detection of explosives.Detection of drugs such as steroids, cocaine etc. NDE for chemical analysis. Force constant & Bond length.Gas analyzer for anaesthesia.

Objectives of Celebrating National Science Day

• National Science Day is being celebrated every year to widely spread a message about the significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people.

• To display the all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare.

• To discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development of the science.

• To give an opportunity to the scientific minded citizens in the country.

• To encourage the people as well as popularize the Science and Technology.

How National Science Day is Celebrated

National science day is celebrated as one of the main science festivals in India every year during

which students of the schools and colleges demonstrates various science projects as well as

national and state science institutions demonstrates their latest researches. The

celebration also includes public speech, radio-TV talk shows, exhibitions of science movie, science

exhibition based on themes and concepts, watching night sky, live projects and researches

demonstration, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science models exhibitions and many

more activities.

Scientific Temper• The attitude of questioning and reasoning.

• It’s approach of Believing, only facts supported by relevant evidences. Where these evidences are derived from observation, Logical interpretation and Conclusion made from experiment or experience which is repeatable under similar condition.

• Believing things to the extent of evidence availability.

• Scientific Temper is a true path finder & guide for our life.

• It’s not only complex scientific methodology but it’s built on solid base of humility, freedom, courage, fearlessness & humanity.

• It’s thought process which believes Universe runs on it’s own by natural laws.

Page 13: Science day

Importance of Scientific Temper

• Scientific Temper will lead to develop, attitude of questioning and reasoning in every citizen, such attitude will boost countries techno-social development .

• Scientific Temper made human understand : --- There is reason behind every happening. --- This reason can be understood by Human. --- The efficiency of approach & availability of

right resources will decide time, completeness & correctness of explanation.

--- This is the surest way to obtain the correct explanation for unknown happenings.

Page 14: Science day

What can be Done to Promote Scientific Temper

• Education / Science based Education.• Every individual needs to understand & try

to develop this attitude as a constitutional duty.

• Think, about Scientific Temper, Speak & implement. The same.

• On mass scale following is normally done; --- Science Exhibitions. --- Essay & Elocution on Science, inventions, Scientist etc. ---Poster competition.

Page 15: Science day

What can be Done to Promote Scientific Temper

• Additionally this needs to be done;

--- Arranging Reformative talks / Science Lectures (Audio/Visual).

--- Arranging visits to nearby Science centres & Industries.

--- Ensuring availability of Science books viz. science made easy, experimental science.

--- Science shows & Demonstrations (Science toys by Dr Arvind Gupta).

--- Providing activity kits.

--- Snakes Shows / Birds-Butterflies watching visits.

Message On National Science Day-2015

• You are future builders of India.

• Then you must have a scientific temper and know what is method of science and develop a habit to mould your activities accordingly .

• But this habit does not always come naturally; they have to be practiced.
