Narrative

1.

Lifeblood oforganisations isinformation

StructuredStuff in databases

Unstructured

MS Office docs, PDFs

Now, many only collaboration tools havethis data (although in database!)

Information about

Customers

Partners

Organisational performance etc.

SCL believes that this distinction isbreaking down

Tools for non-techies make manipulatingdata & info an emerging possibility for all

This can also lead to lower costs &greater busienss agility - not held back byinfrastructure

But it must be managed!

2. Historically

Originally, mainframes were thedominant computing platform

This was good because IT Dept controlled everything

This was bad because IT Dept controlled everything

Success of PC was driven by use ofspreadsheets & later word processingsoftware

This was good because it allowed usersto do more things

This was bad because it allowed users to do more things

Databases have also come a long way

WWW is all about collaboration & textual info

Brings us to the present - i.e. the secondgeneration of the Web

But how do you share & manageexploding amounts of information

3. Digital Nervous system

Bill Gates popularised this term, I still feel it's valid

Data, Info & Knowledge

Want the understanding to go from bottom to top

Need to collect the data in the first place

Needs to be accurate

Capture & storage are not enough, youneed to be able to find things

The way applications talk with oneanother has also come a long way

Information supply chain

Internally

With Partners

With wider stakeholders

4. You need it flowing as well as possible

Then harness,reuse & exploit it

Knowledge Mgmt & re-use

Breakdown

70% People

20% Process

10% Technology

Also need governance & oversight

In the past, it was top-down control

Management was happy with this

Bottom-up was seen as undesirable

Out of control

Waste of time

Might say undesirable things

But still, there was something missingIn terms of sharing information

Using tools effectively

5.

Tools are now emerging thatnon-technical people can harnessto better share & consumeinformation

Coillaboration tools from major vendors

Blogs, wikis, etc.

'Mashup' tools, which allow combinationof structured & unstructured information

Governance

Sometimes in tool

Most often needs to be managed by people

People change also needs to bemanaged - culture & attitudes

6.

SCL can help you take advantageof this wave, as well as existingbest practice tools and techniques

Crowdsoucing

Help you understand key areas

I'm not a database person, but have a feelabout what to do with the data

e.g. e.g. experience ofPerformancce Management
